Chapter 6: What She Sees
Emily's journey home dissolved into a blur…time slipping through her fingers like water. One moment she walked beneath fractured streetlights, the next she was sprinting. aimless, thoughtless, Driven solely by instinct.
She barely remembered yanking Lena's wrist or veering off the main path. Gravel crunched underfoot, branches snagged at their sleeves, and the night itself seemed to press in closer, listening… waiting. Neither spoke not when their breaths rattled, not when Emily's lungs burned, not when Lena stumbled. Words felt dangerous, as though sound might awaken whatever trailed them.
At last they slowed, and the world snapped back. Distant traffic hummed. A breeze whispered through the trees, shadows stilled. Yet the unease remained, wedged in Emily's chest. She pressed a hand there as they approached her gate, trying…and failing…..to calm the turmoil beneath her ribs.
Lena walked beside her in absolute silence and that felt more wrong than any scream. Lena, who usually filled quiet with jokes or sharp observations, said nothing. Not even, "What was that?" The hush between them grew thick enough to suffocate.
At the gate, Emily stopped, fingers tightening on her bag strap. The metal bars normally familiar felt cold, watchful tonight. She turned to Lena. "You don't have to wait"
Lena neither moved nor blinked. Slowly, she shook her head "I know" Still, she stayed.
Above them, the streetlight flickered once, twice…casting stuttering shadows across Lena's face, sharpening her features, igniting her eyes with resolve.
"That wasn't normal" Lena said quietly but firmly.
"I know" Emily replied too quickly, looking away.
"No" Lena stepped closer "You don't."
Emily's breath caught.
"You felt it" Lena said, locking eyes with her "I saw what happened back there."
A chill skittered up Emily's spine "I never meant for it."
Lena's expression softened for a moment "I believe you." The faith in her voice made it worse.
"But it's still terrifying."
Her words hung in the air…honest, heavy, free of blame. Emily exhaled, shoulders sagging under an unnamed weight. "I'm trying to understand it."
Lena watched as if weighing whether that was enough. Finally she nodded, though her eyes remained hard. "Promise me something."
Emily hesitated. "What?"
"That you won't shut me out."
Emily's chest tightened. "I won't" She meant it… mostly.
Lena seemed to sense her doubt but said nothing more. She stepped back, leaving a small, necessary distance. "Text me when you're inside."
Emily nodded, then walked through the gate, feeling Lena's gaze fixed on her….watchful, expectant.
The front door creaked open. Inside, the air shifted. The soft click of the latch closing behind her sounded final. Silence filled the hall, not the benign quiet of an empty house, but something sharper, colder.
Emily froze, hand on the knob. The night hadn't followed her inside, she was sure of that. But something else had… or perhaps had been waiting. A single light burned at the end of the marble-floored corridor, its pale glow reflecting off the polished surface. The rest of the house lay in shadow, its edges blurred.
Her mother always sensed when things were off. Emily kicked off her shoes, the cold floor sending shivers up her legs as she took each echoing step.
Halfway down the hall, a voice came from the living room "Emily."
Calm. Precise. Inescapable.
Emily's pulse spiked. She forced herself to answer, voice trembling, "I'm here."
A long pause. Then "Come in."
Not a request. An order. Emily's stomach clenched as she crossed the threshold. The living room was dim, lit only by a lamp near the window. Its warm glow didn't reach the corners, which lay devoured by shadow. Her mother stood by the glass, back partly turned, shoulders rigid.
"You're late" she said without turning.
Emily clasped her hands to still their tremor. "The gala ran longer than I expected."
Silence. Then "Yet you slipped away early."
Emily's throat went dry. "I just needed air."
Another hush. Her mother turned slowly "Look at me."
Emily met her gaze. Her mother's eyes scanned her with unsettling precision, measuring posture, breath, tension.
"You're not yourself tonight."
"I'm tired" Emily whispered.
A thread of doubt wove through the room.
"You caused a scene."
Emily's jaw clenched. "I didn't mean to."
"You were rejected" her mother stated flatly.
The word cut deep.
"That doesn't matter" she continued. "What matters is how you handle humiliation."
Something trembled beneath Emily's skin. "I left" she said softly. "That's all."
Her mother stepped closer. The air around her seemed to shift. "You always do that" she said quietly. "You avoid."
"Avoid what?" Emily managed.
"Confrontation."
Emily's certainty wavered. She felt the shadows at her feet shift and twist, as if alive.
Her mother's gaze followed them, then lifted back to Emily "Look down."
Every instinct screamed no, but Emily obeyed. At her ankles the darkness writhed…subtle, yet undeniably moving. Her breath caught.
They stared at each other for a long, silent moment. Then her mother spoke, quieter now "You're not hiding this well."
Emily's heart pounded. "I don't know what it is," she admitted.
Her mother's eyes held hers for an agonizing second, then she stepped back. "Go to your room."
Emily opened her mouth to protest. "Mom…"
"Now."
There was no room for debate. Emily turned and left. The hall stretched out, colder than before. Her phone buzzed in her hand.
Lena: Are you inside?
Emily typed, Yeah.
Lena: Good. Something felt off when you left.
Emily's thumbs hovered over the keys, then a new message appeared from an unknown number:
Unknown: You made it home.
Her pulse spiked.
Unknown: That won't always be the case.
Her throat went dry.
Unknown: They're closer than you think.
The hallway lights flickered—once, twice.
At the far end, the shadows stretched, too long, too eager. For a single heartbeat, they moved.
