Chapter 12: What Answers Back
The hush shattered.
It never lasted for long.
But this time…
No footsteps.
No voices.
No breath exhaled.
Something shifted.
Emily sensed it first.
Not outside.
Not down the hall.
Within her.
Her mark flared.
Not with a heartbeat.
Not merely reacting.
A tug.
Her chest tightened as she raised her hand, fingertip hovering above the dark line carved into her wrist.
It throbbed under her skin.
Alive.
Hungry.
"…Emily"
Lucien's voice was calm, but he was closer now.
She didn't meet his eyes.
"I feel it" she murmured, her tone distant—like she wasn't entirely there.
"What?" Kai's voice came from behind.
Emily swallowed.
"It's not just them" she said slowly. "Something else… noticed."
The words dropped into the corridor like a threat.
Darius stepped forward.
"That can't be."
Mira shook her head softly
"It can."
All eyes turned to her, trained on Emily's wrist, on the mark.
"You didn't merely destroy it," Mira said. "You linked to it."
Emily's lungs tightened.
"I didn't choose to"
"That's irrelevant."
Kai ran a hand through his hair, exhaling.
"Okay, can someone clarify what that means before something else crawls out of the walls?"
Lucien didn't answer at once. He moved closer to Emily.
"Look at me."
She hesitated, then did.
For a heartbeat—
The corridor, the others, the destruction behind them…all faded.
Just him.
"…What did it feel like?" he asked.
Emily frowned.
"I can't describe it," she said "It wasn't reacting to me."
"So…" Lucien leaned in. "…it recognized you."
Silence. Real silence.
That changed everything.
Darius scowled.
"That proves it, they're linked"
"To her?" Kai asked.
"No" Mira said quietly, "to what you're becoming."
Emily's stomach dropped.
"Stop talking about me like I'm invisible" she snapped.
Mira held her gaze.
"I'm talking about you because you're at the center."
No gentleness. No regret. Just truth.
Emily exhaled. Her mind felt crowded, as if something pressed against her thoughts.
A whisper….barely there.
She froze.
"…Did you hear that?"
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
"Hear what?"
Emily blinked.
"I don't…."
The whisper came again. Closer. Not a voice, but a presence. Calling.
Her breath hitched.
"They're not gone" she said softly.
Darius tensed.
"We cleared…"
"No" Emily interrupted. Voice sharper. "They're not gone."
Shadows along the hallway shifted, subtly, as though something moved within them. Watching. Waiting.
Mira stepped back.
"She's still connected" she said.
"That's bad, right?" Kai asked.
Darius's answer was flat.
"It is."
Lucien's focus stayed on Emily.
"Can you pinpoint it?" he asked.
Emily closed her eyes. The world fell away—the corridor, her friends, the tension—replaced by darkness. Alive. Stirring.
The whisper grew louder, guiding, pulling.
Her breath steadied.
"I can feel it," she said.
"Where?" Lucien pressed.
Her eyes opened, unfocused.
"…Below us."
The word hung in the corridor.
"Below us?" Kai echoed.
"That's impossible," Darius said.
Mira's lips curved down.
"There are lower levels."
Lucien's gaze hardened.
"They're sealed."
"Someone opened them," Mira replied.
A heavy pause.
Emily's voice dropped almost to a whisper.
"It's calling me."
Lucien stepped in front of her.
"You're not leaving."
She met his eyes.
"You don't understand…"
"I understand enough." His tone was firm, it anchored her. But the pull grew, insistent, as if something reached up, waiting for her to reach back.
"…If we stay here," Emily said quietly, "it will come in."
Kai released a breath.
"Great! Either way's awful."
Darius advanced.
"Then we end it now."
Emily shook her head.
"You can't."
They all stared at her.
"It's not like the others" she said. "It's… bigger. Older."
Mira frowned.
"How do you know that?"
Emily shrugged.
"I don't. I just… know."
Silence fell.
Lucien exhaled and made his decision clear.
"We're not letting it come to us."
Darius bristled.
"You're not suggesting…"
"We go to it."
Kai's eyes widened.
"You're serious?"
Lucien didn't need to answer. Mira nodded.
"If she's connected, this might be our only chance to track it."
Darius's jaw clenched.
"This is reckless."
"It's necessary" Lucien said.
Tension crackled, then Darius stepped back not conceding, but warning.
Lucien turned to Emily.
"Can you lead us?"
Her heart pounded. The pull intensified.
"Yes."
For the first time, she did not hesitate.
They moved down the corridor toward the structure's depths. The air grew heavier, colder. Light dimmed, shadows thickened. With every step, the pull strengthened.
"It's close" Emily whispered.
"Focus" Lucien said, not glancing back. But they all felt it, something waiting.
They reached a door—massive, sealed, ancient, etched with faint symbols weathered by time.
"…That doesn't look promising," Kai muttered.
"It isn't," Mira agreed.
Lucien pressed his hand to the door. It wouldn't budge, as if held shut from within.
Emily stepped forward.
"Wait."
All eyes turned to her. Her mark blazed, the whisper thrummed. She lifted her hand and pressed her palm to the carvings.
Immediately, the symbols glowed. Shadows surged. The door groaned open.
A rush of cold, wrong, primordial air spilled out. Emily inhaled sharply. She felt it..not ahead, not around, but within.
And this time—
It was awake.
