Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING

Chapter 3: The Awakening.

Night had shifted. The gala's distant laughter echoed like a cruel joke...hollow, remote, irrelevant. Emily stood beneath a trembling moon, her chest heaving, fingers quivering at her side, something was different.

The air snapped into unnatural stillness, leaves stilled mid-rustle, the world held its breath.

"Why does it feel like this?" she whispered.

A chill clawed up her spine. Then….

A pulse.

Sharp, blinding. It surged through her veins like lightning, wrenching a gasp from her lips. She staggered, clutching her chest as a scorching heat followed, rippling through her in scorching waves. Her heartbeat raced..too fast, too fierce.

At her feet, the shadows moved.

Emily froze, the darkness rippled like living ink, reaching toward her with hungry tendrils.

"No… this isn't…" she mouthed.

The shadows climbed, inch by mocking inch. Panic hit her like a punch. She stumbled back..yet with a soft crack, the darkness recoiled, snapping into place, silence fell like a guillotine.

Her breath trembled in her throat. "I didn't… do that… did I?"

Before she could answer herself, the streetlight above her flickered. Once,Twice And died. Oblivion swallowed the garden…but this time, the dark felt full. Watching.

She forced out a ragged breath. "Who's there?"

No reply…Then a measured footstep from the black.

A figure emerged. Tall, Still, Power radiated from him in palpable waves, pressing against her skin. Even the moonlight obeyed him, barely tracing the planes of his face.

"…So it's true," he murmured, voice low and unblinking.

Emily's heart thundered. "What are you talking about?"

He paused, as if weighing her…Then "You survived the rejection."

Her stomach twisted, the words struck harder than any blow. "I don't need anyone to survive," she snapped, fury igniting in her veins.

A ghost of a smile flickered on his lips…"Interesting."

He stepped closer, just enough for pale light to graze his eyes..cold, unreadable. "Most break, But you… awakened."

Her pulse spiked at the word. Before she could answer, the surge returned…stronger, wilder. The garden trembled, stones cracked and shadows writhed beneath her feet.

"No.." Her defiance was swallowed by a roar of raw power erupting from her. It tore at the night, ripping the silence apart.

In one instant, he was upon her, steel in his grip. He seized her wrist, unyielding. "Focus," he ordered, voice sharp as flint.. "Control it… or it will consume you."

His command cleaved through the chaos. The power collapsed inward, vanishing like a receding tide. The garden stilled, heavy, electric silence pressed in.

Emily stared at him, lungs burning…"Who are you?" she whispered.

He released her, stepping back into the shadows. "You'll find out soon enough."

And then he was gone.

Emily stood frozen, her heart still pounding, her world irrevocably changed. Awakened. The word echoed through her mind, a dark promise. Something had begun tonight…something that smiled in the waiting darkness.
