Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Second Mistake

Lin Yue didn't attack.

That alone—

Was wrong.

Moments ago, she had been relentless. Absolute. A blade that did not hesitate.

Now—

She waited.

Her stance lowered slightly.

Her breathing slowed.

Her eyes—

Locked onto Li Chen with something new inside them.

Not doubt.

Not fear.

Calculation.

"…you touched it."

Her voice cut through the silence.

Flat.

Controlled.

But sharper than before.

"…the moment of finalization."

Li Chen tilted his head slightly.

"…I borrowed it."

A faint smile.

"…from you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because both of them understood what that meant.

Lin Yue moved.

Not forward.

Sideways.

Her foot shifted—just enough to alter her position by a fraction.

But that fraction—

Changed everything.

The space around her tightened.

Not defensively.

Deliberately.

Like she was redrawing the boundary of where she could end things.

"…then I won't let you reach it again."

Her blade lifted.

Not aimed at him.

At the space between them.

Li Chen's smile faded.

Not from fear.

From interest.

"…you're learning too."

She cut.

Not at him.

At the distance.

At the possibility of him stepping closer.

At the moment he needed to touch her again.

The air split.

A thin, invisible line formed—

A boundary.

Anything that crossed it—

Would end.

No delay.

No gap.

No exception.

Li Chen stepped forward.

And stopped.

Right at the edge.

His instincts screamed.

Not danger.

Not death.

Finality.

"…so this is your answer…"

His voice dropped slightly.

"…you removed the gap."

Lin Yue didn't respond.

Didn't need to.

Because the line in front of him—

Was absolute.

Li Chen stared at it.

Silent.

Still.

Thinking.

Then—

He smiled again.

"…good."

He took a step back.

Lin Yue's eyes narrowed.

Because that—

Was not what she expected.

"…you're retreating?"

Li Chen shook his head slowly.

"…no."

A pause.

Then—

"…I'm preparing."

The air around him shifted.

Subtly.

Not outward.

Inward.

The fragments inside him began to move.

Not chaotically.

Not violently.

Organizing.

"…you fixed one mistake…"

His gaze sharpened.

"…so I'll make another."

Multiple versions of him flickered into existence again.

Not as before.

Not random.

Not scattered.

Structured.

Each one stepped toward the line.

One by one.

The first crossed.

And ended.

Instantly.

Cleanly.

Without resistance.

The second followed.

Ended.

The third.

The fourth.

The fifth.

Each one dying.

Each one concluding.

Each one—

Teaching him.

Lin Yue's grip tightened.

"…stop—"

But she didn't move.

Couldn't.

Because if she disrupted the line—

He would reach her.

"…you're wasting yourself."

Li Chen didn't respond.

Didn't stop.

Version after version stepped forward.

Died.

Vanished.

Until—

Only one remained.

The real one.

Li Chen stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

His foot reached the line—

And crossed.

Nothing happened.

Silence.

Lin Yue's eyes widened.

"…what…"

Li Chen stood on the other side.

Inside her range.

Inside the space she had declared absolute.

Unended.

"…you made it too perfect."

His voice was quiet.

Cold.

Precise.

"…so now I know exactly where it ends."

The line behind him flickered—

Then collapsed.

Because he had already experienced every version of its conclusion.

Every variation.

Every possibility.

There was nothing left for it to finalize.

Lin Yue moved instantly.

Her blade cutting down—

Faster than before.

Stronger than before.

Li Chen didn't dodge.

Didn't block.

He stepped closer.

The blade struck.

And for a moment—

Everything aligned.

Perfect.

Complete.

And then—

It failed.

Not completely.

Not cleanly.

But enough.

The cut didn't finalize.

Li Chen's body flickered—

Parts of him ending—

Parts of him persisting—

And in that contradiction—

He moved.

His hand reached her throat.

Not fast.

Not sudden.

Inevitable.

Lin Yue's eyes widened.

Not in fear.

In realization.

"…you learned it…"

Li Chen's grip tightened slightly.

Not crushing.

Not killing.

Testing.

"…not completely."

His voice dropped.

"…but enough."

Her aura flared violently.

Trying to push him away.

Trying to reassert control.

Li Chen didn't resist.

Didn't fight it.

He leaned in closer.

"…you were my only answer…"

A whisper.

Cold.

Close.

"…now you're my next step."

For the first time—

Lin Yue hesitated.

And that—

Was her second mistake.

The moment stretched.

Fragile.

Sharp.

Unstable.

Li Chen felt it.

That gap.

That opening.

The same one she had shown him.

His fingers tightened.

"…I see it now…"

The world held its breath.

Because if he completed it—

If he truly replicated what she could do—

Then this wouldn't be a fight anymore.

It would be an execution.

And there would be nothing left in this world—

That could stop him.

Lin Yue's blade trembled slightly.

Not from weakness.

From pressure.

Because she understood.

This was the moment.

The one that would decide everything.

Her voice came out low.

Sharp.

Final.

"…then finish it."

Li Chen's eyes darkened.

Not with rage.

Not with hunger.

With decision.

His hand moved.

And the world—

Waited.
