Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Only Thing That Can Kill Him

They stood in a world that no longer acknowledged them.

Disciples passed.

Voices echoed.

Life continued.

And yet—

None of it touched them.

Because this space—

This thin, fractured layer of reality—

Belonged only to two things.

Something that shouldn't exist.

And something that could cut it.

Li Chen exhaled slowly.

"…so you're real."

Not a question.

A realization.

Lin Yue didn't respond.

Her grip on the sword tightened slightly.

Her aura didn't explode outward like the others.

It condensed.

Sharpened.

Focused entirely on him.

Like a blade that had forgotten everything except its purpose.

"…you feel different…"

She took a step forward.

Careful.

Measured.

"…not stronger…"

A pause.

Her eyes narrowed.

"…harder to define."

Li Chen smiled faintly.

"…that's because I'm not trying to be anything anymore."

Silence.

Then—

She moved.

No warning.

No buildup.

No wasted motion.

The sword cut forward.

Li Chen didn't dodge.

He didn't move at all.

Because he wanted to know.

If she could reach him—

Then what would it feel like?

The blade passed through his chest.

Clean.

Precise.

Final.

And for a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

Pain.

Real.

Sharp.

Unavoidable.

"—!"

Li Chen's body jerked violently.

Not because he was injured—

But because something inside him had been touched.

Not his body.

Not his form.

Something deeper.

His existence—

Had been cut.

He staggered back.

"…so it works…"

His voice came out unsteady.

Almost… relieved.

Lin Yue didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward again.

Second strike.

Faster.

Sharper.

This time—

Li Chen moved.

Too slow.

The blade carved across his side.

And something—

Came apart.

Not flesh.

Not bone.

A piece of him—

Disconnected.

He felt it.

The loss.

Not physical.

Conceptual.

Like a part of his "self" had just been removed from existence.

"…that's new…"

His breathing became uneven.

Because this—

Didn't feel like death.

It felt worse.

It felt like becoming less.

Lin Yue stopped.

Just for a moment.

Observing.

"…you're not regenerating."

Li Chen looked down.

Where she had cut him—

There was no wound.

But something was missing.

A gap.

A hollow.

A part of him that no longer existed to be restored.

"…you're right…"

His voice lowered.

"…I'm not."

Silence.

Heavy.

Understanding settled between them.

Because this—

Was different.

Every other attack he had faced—

He survived by breaking.

By adapting.

By refusing to stay the same long enough to be destroyed.

But this—

Didn't destroy him.

It reduced him.

And reduction—

Couldn't be undone.

Lin Yue raised her sword again.

"…then I'll keep cutting."

Li Chen's eyes sharpened.

For the first time—

There was something behind them.

Not emptiness.

Not hunger.

Fear.

"…if you do that…"

His voice tightened slightly.

"…I won't come back the same."

A pause.

Then—

"…or at all."

Lin Yue didn't stop.

Didn't hesitate.

"…good."

She stepped forward.

Third strike.

This time—

Li Chen disappeared.

Not fast.

Not clean.

He simply wasn't where the blade fell.

He reappeared a few steps away.

His breathing heavier now.

Unstable.

"…I see…"

His gaze locked onto her.

"…you're not like the others…"

Lin Yue didn't respond.

She moved again.

Relentless.

Her blade cut through the space between them—

And Li Chen felt it before it touched him.

That precision.

That absolute certainty.

She wasn't cutting his body.

She was cutting the idea of him.

He twisted—

Barely avoiding it.

But even then—

Something was lost.

A fragment of awareness.

A piece of thought.

Gone.

"…this is bad…"

His voice dropped.

Because now—

He understood.

She wasn't trying to kill him.

She was dismantling him.

Piece by piece.

Until nothing remained to come back.

"…you're dangerous…"

Lin Yue stopped again.

Just for a moment.

"…and you're breaking."

Her words were calm.

Certain.

Li Chen laughed weakly.

"…I've been breaking since the beginning…"

A pause.

Then—

"…but this time…"

His expression shifted.

"…it's sticking."

The air around him distorted slightly.

The fragments inside him stirred.

Not violently.

Not chaotically.

Desperately.

Trying to hold what remained together.

But it wasn't enough.

Not against her.

"…so what now…"

He whispered.

"…do I run again…?"

Silence.

The thought lingered.

Heavy.

Tempting.

Survive.

Escape.

Come back stronger.

That was what he had done before.

That was how he had lasted this long.

But this time—

Something felt different.

Because if he ran now—

He might not have enough left to return.

"…no…"

The word came out slowly.

Firm.

"…not this time."

Lin Yue's eyes narrowed slightly.

Because something in him had changed.

Again.

Not outwardly.

Not visibly.

But internally.

A decision.

Li Chen took a step forward.

His body trembled.

Unstable.

Incomplete.

But moving.

"…if you can erase me…"

His voice steadied slightly.

"…then I'll learn from it."

Lin Yue's grip tightened.

"…you won't survive that."

Li Chen smiled.

Faint.

Broken.

Certain.

"…I don't need to survive…"

A pause.

Then—

"…I just need to understand."

The fragments inside him surged.

Not outward.

Inward.

Condensing.

Focusing.

Everything he had—

Everything he was—

Gathered around one idea.

Her.

Her blade.

Her ability.

The way she cut him.

The way she reduced him.

The way she—

Worked.

"…again."

He stepped closer.

Not dodging.

Not resisting.

Inviting it.

Lin Yue didn't hesitate.

Her blade moved.

Perfect.

Unavoidable.

It cut through him—

And something vanished.

Li Chen staggered.

His body flickering violently.

His thoughts tearing apart.

"…again…"

He forced himself forward.

Another strike.

Another loss.

Another piece of him gone.

"…again…"

His voice broke.

But he didn't stop.

Didn't retreat.

Didn't resist.

He let her cut him.

Over.

And over.

And over.

Until—

He dropped to one knee.

His form barely holding.

His awareness fractured.

His existence—

On the verge of collapse.

"…why…"

Lin Yue's voice cut through the silence.

Not confused.

Not emotional.

But—

Curious.

"…why are you letting this happen?"

Li Chen looked up.

His vision barely stable.

His voice—

Barely there.

"…because…"

A weak smile formed.

"…this is the first thing that might actually end me…"

A pause.

Then—

"…and I need to know how."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Final.

Because in that moment—

Lin Yue understood.

He wasn't fighting her.

He wasn't trying to win.

He wasn't even trying to survive.

He was—

Studying his own death.

And that—

Was far more dangerous than anything she had faced before.

Her grip tightened.

Her blade lifted.

And this time—

She didn't hold back.

Because if she didn't end him now—

He would learn something he should never understand.

And if that happened—

Not even she would be able to stop him.

Li Chen smiled.

Faint.

Fading.

"…one more…"

The blade fell.

And everything—

Hung on that moment.
