Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The After-School Rematch by the Naka River

The moment Seiran stepped into the academy classroom, he felt the shift. Eyes tracked him—curious, envious, admiring. Whispers followed like autumn wind through leaves. He spotted Iroha by the window, her Byakugan-pale eyes fixed on him with an expression he couldn't quite read. When their gazes met, she turned away sharply, her jaw tightening.

He'd barely settled into his seat when Anko leaned over from the adjacent desk, her dark eyes gleaming with barely contained curiosity.

"Hey, Seiran," she whispered urgently. "Is it true? Are you really a dual-Kekkei Genkai heir?"

"Obviously." He didn't bother looking up.

"That's insane! I thought one bloodline was the maximum for anyone."

Seiran glanced at her, unimpressed. "Kirigakure has had dual-bloodline shinobi. They're rare, but not unheard of. Read a book sometime."

Anko flinched, then nodded meekly. "Oh."

He sensed movement before he saw her—a familiar presence that made his instincts flare. Rin Uchiha stood before his desk, her expression unreadable.

"Is there something you need?" he asked carefully. After their last encounter by the river, he wasn't sure what to expect from her.

"Let's fight after school," she said flatly.

Seiran blinked. What?

"Elementary students usually don't schedule fights like—"

"I want a rematch." Rin's voice cut through his objection with surgical precision. "I learned new jutsu. I wasn't satisfied losing last time."

Relief washed over him. Just a rematch. He almost smiled. "You could've just said that instead of—"

"Compared to Kakashi, you're a more suitable training partner," she continued, her black eyes boring into his. There was no hostility there—just calculation.

So I'm an XP farm now?

"Interesting strategy," he said, leaning back in his chair. "Not impossible."

Rin's lips quirked upward slightly. "So you agree?"

"Don't celebrate yet," he replied, matching her flat tone. "I'll fight you, but if you lose, you have to accept one condition."

Her frown was immediate. "What condition?"

"You'll find out if you lose."

"What if you ask me to do something strange?" Suspicion darkened her features. "I'd have to agree?"

Seiran's expression froze. If he'd been holding water, he would've choked on it.

"Hmm..." He looked thoughtful—too thoughtful.

Rin's fists clenched. A vein pulsed at her temple. "Don't even think about it, bastard!"

"I'm just kidding," he said quickly, raising his hands in mock surrender. The intensity radiating from her was genuinely frightening.

Anko watched the exchange with unbridled amusement, grinning like she was watching the best show in the village.

"Look," Seiran said, meeting Rin's eyes with unusual earnestness. "I promise the condition won't be weird. And if you think it's unreasonable, you can refuse."

Rin studied him for a long moment, then nodded. "Fine. Deal."

---

The grove behind the mountain was bathed in the dying sun's golden light. The Naka River wound between ancient trees, its waters catching fire in the amber glow. Fallen leaves scattered across the ground like embers.

Rin moved through the space with obvious familiarity, surveying the clearing. "Do you always train here? Why not use your clan's training grounds?"

"Clans like the Hyuga have too many rules," Seiran said, settling into a relaxed stance. "Out here, I can actually experiment without someone telling me I'm doing it wrong."

Rin nodded slowly, something shifting in her expression. "The Uchiha elders are the same. That's why I started coming to the river too."

For a moment, they stood in shared understanding—two heirs of powerful clans, both seeking freedom from expectations. The connection was brief but real.

The river sang softly between them. The sky deepened to crimson and purple above the trees.

"Ready?" Rin asked, settling into her stance.

Seiran mirrored her position, his muscles coiling with anticipation.

"Let's go," he replied.

Rin moved first—a blur of motion that cut through the golden light.
