Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Threads of Violet

---

The evening streets of the city glowed softly under streetlamps as Draven and Lira walked side by side. The air had cooled, carrying the faint scent of night-blooming flowers and distant rain. Lira still held onto his arm, her steps lighter now that the adrenaline from the fight had fully faded.

She glanced up at him with a teasing smile. "You know, for someone who claims he doesn't do 'normal,' you're doing pretty well tonight. Hot chocolate with whipped cream, actual conversation, and you even laughed — sort of. I'm proud of you, Shadow Slayer."

Draven kept his gaze forward, but the tension in his posture had eased. "It was a small laugh. Don't exaggerate."

"Small is still progress!" Lira replied brightly, swinging their linked arms gently. "Next milestone: getting you to smile for longer than two seconds. Or maybe letting me pick the movie for our next quiet night in. Something romantic with swords in it, obviously."

He gave her a sideways glance, one eyebrow raised. "You're already planning the next date before this one ends?"

"Of course I am. Someone has to, since you forgot the first one." She poked his side playfully, careful to avoid his bandaged shoulder. "But seriously… today was nice. Even with the monster interruption. It felt like we were a real team. You slashing, me throwing whatever I could find. We actually hurt that thing together."

Draven was quiet for a few steps. Then he spoke, voice low and measured.

"You shouldn't have to fight. That's my burden."

Lira stopped walking, tugging his arm so he faced her. Under the warm glow of a streetlamp, her expression was earnest. "Hey. It's not just your burden anymore. I chose to stay. I chose to throw those stones and yell at that flower freak. And I'd do it again." She reached up and gently touched the side of his face. "I'm not asking to become a sword user. I just don't want to sit on the sidelines worrying about you all the time. Let me be part of your world — even if it's messy and dangerous."

Draven looked down at her, conflict flickering in his dark eyes. For a long moment he said nothing. Then he covered her hand with his own, holding it against his cheek.

"…You make the shadows feel less heavy. But if anything happens to you because of me—"

"Then we'll deal with it together," Lira finished firmly, smiling up at him. "No more lone wolf promises that leave me behind. Deal?"

A faint sigh escaped him, but the corner of his mouth lifted. "You never let me finish my warnings."

"Because I already know what they are, and I'm still here." She leaned in closer, her voice softening. "Now, walk me home? It's getting late, and I don't want to explain to my neighbors why the mysterious guy in black is standing outside my door again."

Draven nodded once. They continued walking, the city sounds fading into a comfortable quiet between them.

As they turned onto Lira's street, a sudden sharp pulse came from the 7th Form at his hip — stronger than before. Draven stopped abruptly, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt.

Lira noticed immediately. "What is it? Another monster?"

Draven drew the sword a few inches. The black blade caught the streetlight… but now, thin threads of deep violet shimmered along the edge, pulsing like living veins. The color flickered, then settled, making the black appear richer, almost alive.

"It's shifting," he murmured, eyes narrowing. "The violet stage… it's starting. Faster than I expected."

Lira's eyes widened as she stared at the blade. "Whoa… it's beautiful. Scary, but beautiful. Does that mean you're getting stronger?"

Draven sheathed it slowly, feeling the sword's hunger thrumming beneath the surface. "Stronger… and more noticeable. Monsters will sense it. The cave will sense it." He looked at her, voice serious. "This changes things. The black stage was hidden. Violet won't be."

Lira bit her lip, then squared her shoulders with determination. "Then we prepare. You train, I research old stories about the cave or the 99 colors. We can do this." She took his hand and squeezed it. "But tonight? No more monster talk. Walk me to my door, say goodnight like a normal guy, and promise you'll text me tomorrow instead of vanishing on a solo mission."

Draven held her hand a moment longer, the new violet pulse still echoing faintly in his mind. *She's too bright for this darkness… but she refuses to leave.*

"…I'll text."

Lira beamed. "Good enough for now."

At her apartment door, she turned to him, rising on her toes to press a quick, soft kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for today, Draven. Monsters and all. Get some rest — that shoulder needs it."

Draven stood still as she slipped inside, the faint warmth of her kiss lingering. He touched his cheek once, then turned to leave.

The 7th Form pulsed again — violet threads spreading just a little further.

In the monster realm, the ancient cave flared with matching violet light. Stone walls cracked faintly as new power awakened.

Hungry eyes opened in the dark.

The first color shift had begun.

And the real hunt was only starting.
