Chapter 24 - The Dead Core’s Resonance

The deeper Alex descended into the bowels of Rust City, the more the world began to resemble a glitching simulation. The Dead Core was the city's original power plant—a massive, spherical reactor that had suffered a "Mana Melt" decades ago. Now, it was a restricted bio-hazard zone where physics behaved like a corrupted file.

The air here was ionized. Purple static danced across Alex's skin, snapping and hissing.

[System Warning: High-Density Ionization Zone]

[Environmental Debuff: 'Mana Burn' active — -10 HP/sec for mana-users]

[Player Status: IMMUNE (Extreme Martial Path - Zero Mana detected)]

Alex let out a dry huff of air. Being "trash" in the eyes of the world was finally paying off. While a Tier-4 Mage would have had their mana circuits fried instantly by this radiation, Alex's Bone Tempering Stage 5 skeleton acted as a natural lightning rod, grounding the energy safely into the floor.

"Barnaby said the ore is in the secondary cooling chamber," Alex muttered, his golden eyes scanning the dark, metallic corridors. "But he didn't mention the 'Core-Leeches'."

The First Elite Encounter

From the rusted ceiling, three shapes detached themselves. They were Scrap-Hounds—monsters born from the fusion of stray mana and discarded combat drones. Their bodies were a horrific mix of jagged steel, exposed wiring, and rotting organic tissue.

[Monster Identified: Tier-3 Bio-Mech Hound (Elite)]

[Level: 35]

[Ability: 'Chain-Lightning Maw']

The hounds didn't bark; they screeched with the sound of grinding gears. One lunged, its metallic jaws glowing with white-hot electricity.

In a gaming sense, Alex was "under-leveled" for a Tier-3 encounter. But Alex didn't play by the system's levels. He played by Density.

[ Fist of Law-Breaking: Seventh Insight — Collapsing Star ]

Alex pivoted on his lead foot, his weight sinking into the steel floor, leaving a heavy dent. He didn't punch the hound. He punched the air in its path. The shockwave created a vacuum, dragging the hound toward his fist.

BOOM!

The hound's metallic skull didn't just break—it folded inward like a soda can under a hydraulic press.

[CRITICAL HIT!]

[Overkill Damage Detected!]

[Experience Gained: 2,500]

[Current Progress to 'Five-Element Fusion': 12%]

The remaining two hounds hesitated. Their primitive AI calculated a 0% survival rate. They turned to flee, but Alex was already a blur. He moved with Void-Step, appearing between them. He grabbed both hounds by their mechanical necks and smashed them together. The resulting explosion of sparks and oil bathed the corridor in a brief, flickering blue light.

The Thunder-Heart Ore

At the center of the cooling chamber sat a pedestal of cracked obsidian. Floating above it was a jagged, pulsing rock the size of a human heart. It vibrated with such frequency that it created a constant, low-pitched hum that vibrated Alex's teeth.

[Item Identified: Thunder-Heart Ore (Grade: Epic)]

[Description: A solidified knot of high-frequency lightning energy. Used for Rank-S weapon forging or... Dangerous Internal Alchemy.]

Alex reached out. The moment his fingers brushed the ore, a massive discharge of electricity surged through his arm.

"GAHH!"

His vision turned white. The Dragon-Marrow Essence in his bones roared in response, trying to fight off the foreign energy. But Alex didn't let go. He clamped his hand shut, the "Living Blood" in his heart pumping at triple speed.

[WARNING: Internal Body Temperature reaching 300°F!]

[Viscera Tempering accelerating to unstable levels!]

Alex forced the ore against his chest, right over his heart. This was the "Break the Seal" method described in the Black Archives. He wasn't going to craft a sword; he was going to turn his own heart into the anvil.

The ore didn't melt. It sank. It passed through his skin and muscle, drawn in by the magnetic pull of his Martial Intent. The moment it touched his heart, Alex's world ended.

The Awakening

Thump.

The sound was so loud it shattered the remaining glass in the cooling chamber.

THUMP.

Alex's eyes snapped open. They were no longer just golden—they were swirling with white-hot electrical arcs. His Viscera Tempering had skipped the remaining 35% and hit the limit.

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE!]

[New Passive Ability Unlocked: 'Thunder-Core Heart']

[Effect: Your strikes now carry 'Internal Discharge' damage. Physical attacks ignore 20% of Mana Shields.]

He stood up, his body vibrating with a power so dense it felt like he was made of lead and lightning. But the celebration was short-lived.

"Impressive," a voice drawled from the shadows of the reactor. "I haven't seen someone survive a 'Heart-Merge' since the Great Change. Truly, a high-quality specimen."

A man stepped into the light. He was tall, dressed in a sleek, white military coat that looked out of place in the grime of the Dead Core. Behind him stood four figures in silver masks—the Bureau's 'Extermination Squad.'

The man in white pulled a silver monocle from his pocket and adjusted it. "Alex Silvester. Or should I call you 'Ash'? My name is Director Vane. I'm the one who wrote the report on why your sect had to be erased."

Vane smiled, and the air around him began to warp. He wasn't a Tier-3 or Tier-4. The pressure he emitted was that of a Tier-6 'Grandmaster.'

"You've grown quite a bit in the mud," Vane said, drawing a thin, rapier-like sword. "But even a diamond can be crushed if you apply enough pressure."

[QUEST UPDATE: Survive the Director]

[Difficulty: IMPOSSIBLE]

[Survival Odds: 0.04%]

Alex didn't look at the notification. He simply clenched his fists, the Thunder-Heart in his chest giving a violent, hungry pulse.

"The odds are getting better," Alex said, a jagged, electric smile crossing his face. "Last time, they were zero."
