Chapter 20 - The Shackle-Breaker

The air in the grotto crystallized. The hum of the mana-suppressor rifles created a high-pitched whine that set Alex's newly tempered teeth on edge. As he rose from the crimson pool, steam hissed off his skin, and the "Living Blood" dripped from his fingertips like molten rubies. He stood tall, naked but for the raw power radiating from his frame, a bronzed titan born from the earth's own veins.

"By order of the High Council," the lead Bureau agent repeated, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Lower yourself to your knees and place your hands behind your head. This is your final warning, Silvester."

Sujata Roy stood between the agents and the pool, her hand white-knuckled on her sword hilt. "Alex, please. These aren't school bullies. Their weapons are tuned to disrupt the very bio-rhythm of a Professional. If they fire, your heart will stop."

"My heart already stopped, Sujata," Alex said. His voice was a low, resonant boom that seemed to shake the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. "I'm the one who restarted it."

The Speed of Thought

The lead agent didn't wait. He was a professional, trained to eliminate threats before they could speak. He pulled the trigger.

VREEE—!

A beam of concentrated blue light, a "Neural-Interference Pulse," streaked across the grotto. In the past, this light would have moved faster than Alex could blink. But with his Viscera Tempering at 60% and his Bone Tempering at Stage 5, Alex's perception of time had warped. The adrenaline surging through his reinforced heart was like rocket fuel.

He didn't dodge the beam. He slapped it.

With a movement so fast it created a localized sonic crack, Alex's palm collided with the energy pulse. The Star-Iron minerals now bonded to his skin acted as a natural ground. The blue light shattered against his hand like glass against a hammer, dissipating into harmless sparks.

"What?!" the agent gasped. "That was a Grade-4 suppression pulse! It should have paralyzed a Tier-3 Vanguard!"

"I told you," Alex said, his feet blurring as he launched himself from the pool. "I don't do 'quietly'."

Alex didn't run; he vanished. To the agents, it looked like a glitch in reality. To Sujata, whose amber eyes could track high-speed movements, it was a terrifying display of pure kinetic force. Alex wasn't using a "Blink" spell or spatial magic; he was simply pushing off the ground with such explosive power that the air itself couldn't get out of his way.

He appeared in front of the first agent.

The man tried to swing the butt of his rifle, but Alex caught the weapon. With a single twist of his wrist, the reinforced alloy of the mana-suppressor—built to withstand dragon strikes—snapped like a dry twig. Alex then drove his open palm into the agent's chest plate.

BOOM.

The shockwave didn't just knock the man back; it collapsed the ceramic-titanium armor inward. The agent flew across the grotto, skipping across the "Living Blood" lake like a stone before slamming into the far wall. He didn't move again.

The Duel of Amber and Gold

"Halt!"

Sujata's sword was out. The blade, a masterwork of spirit-steel called Amber's Breath, glowed with a soft, ethereal light. She didn't want to fight him, but the second agent was already recalibrating his weapon for a lethal "Disintegration Beam."

"Move, Sujata," Alex warned, his golden eyes locked onto hers.

"I can't let you become a fugitive, Alex! If you kill Bureau agents, there is no turning back! You'll be hunted by the Twelve Great Families!" she cried, her blade trembling.

"They were already hunting me," Alex replied. "They just didn't have a name for it yet."

Sujata lunged. It was the [ Roy Family Secret Art: Autumn Leaf Dance ]. Her movements were a blur of elegance and precision, the sword trailing ribbons of amber light that sought the gaps in Alex's defense.

Alex engaged his Flowing Iron technique. He moved within the storm of her strikes, his skin humming as the blade grazed him. Each time the spirit-steel touched his arm, it left a faint white line instead of a gash. His bones were now denser than the sword's edge.

He caught the flat of her blade between two fingers—a feat that should have been impossible.

"Your heart is wavering, Sujata," Alex whispered. "That's why your sword is slow."

With a gentle but firm flick, he sent a vibration down the length of her blade. The resonance was so perfectly tuned to her mana frequency that it forced her to drop the weapon.

The Price of Freedom

The second agent finally fired. A searing beam of white-hot disintegration energy tore through the air, aimed directly at Alex's back.

"ALEX, WATCH OUT!" Sujata screamed.

Alex didn't turn. He reached behind him, his hand glowing with the combined heat of the Dragon-Marrow and the Living Blood. He caught the beam in his bare hand. The heat was immense—his skin began to char—but he didn't let go. He crushed the energy in his fist, the light leaking through his fingers before snuffing out.

He turned his head slowly, looking at the horrified agent.

"My turn," Alex said.

He didn't use a technique. He simply stepped forward and delivered a straight punch into the air. The resulting air-pressure wave hit the agent with the force of a falling skyscraper. The man was leveled instantly, his rifle exploding into a thousand pieces of shrapnel.

Silence returned to the grotto, broken only by the bubbling of the crimson lake.

Alex stood in the center of the wreckage, his body steaming, his hand slowly healing from the disintegration burn. He looked at Sujata, who was kneeling on the ground, reaching for her sword.

"Go," Alex said quietly.

Sujata looked up, her eyes wet. "What?"

"Go back to the university. Tell them I killed the agents and escaped into the Deep Wilds. Tell them I'm a monster. If you stay associated with me, the Bureau will dismantle the Roy family."

"Alex..."

"This is the 'bitter path,' Sujata," Alex said, picking up his backpack and the jade slip. He looked toward the dark tunnel that led even deeper into the earth, toward the untamed Rifts. "The world isn't ready for a man who doesn't need their bloodlines. Until I'm strong enough to make them ready... I walk alone."

He turned and walked into the darkness.

Sujata Roy watched the darkness where he had vanished for a long time. She picked up her sword, her fingers tracing the faint dent Alex had left on the blade.

"You're wrong about one thing, Alex," she whispered to the empty cave. "You aren't a monster. You're the first real human I've ever met."
