Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Core of the Machine

The core lab hummed with a cold, artificial energy, the air thick with the faint, metallic tang of ozone. The prototype sat on its pedestal at the room's center, its black casing pulsing with an eerie blue light, the forced-connection Neural Weave implant a silent promise of enslavement. The crackling force field wrapped around it like a cage, its static casting sharp shadows across the glass walls. The three security drones in the corner remained motionless, their optics dark, their power held in stasis by Olympus's central control. "Chen Mo, the terminal," Lin Ye whispered, his eyes locked on the drones. "Su Xiao, keep the jammer running. Leo, prep the charges. Jake, watch the door—if any patrols slip through, take them down quietly." Chen Mo nodded, moving toward the wall-mounted terminal, his neural implant flaring faintly as he approached. The terminal screen flickered to life, displaying Olympus's core security interface, lines of encrypted code scrolling too fast for the human eye to follow. His fingers hovered over the keyboard, pausing as the implant synced with the system. "The force field's tied directly to the main server," he said, his voice tight. "Shutting it down will trigger a system alert. The drones will wake immediately. And the moment the field drops, the jammer's static won't hold—Olympus will see us. All of us." "Then we move fast," Lin Ye said. "Su Xiao, you and Stardust overload the camera feeds the second the field drops. Buy us as much time as you can. Leo, once the field is down, plant the charges on the prototype. Five-minute fuse—we don't wait." Su Xiao tapped her terminal, the jammer's hum rising in pitch. "I'm already rerouting the tower's security logs. They'll see a false feed of the lab empty for three minutes. After that, it's chaos." Leo hefted the explosive pack, checking the timer. "Charges are primed. I'll plant them on the prototype's core wiring. Once they go off, nothing will be left of the implant or the server banks." Jake stepped to the lab's entrance, his taser in hand, his back pressed to the wall. "Door's clear for now. But if the alert goes out, they'll come fast. I'll hold them as long as I can." Chen Mo's fingers began flying over the keyboard, his movements precise, guided by the master key in his implant. The terminal beeped softly, and the force field flickered, its blue light dimming for a split second. The drones in the corner twitched, their optics flaring faintly, then going dark again. "Almost there," Chen Mo said, sweat beading on his forehead. "Olympus's firewalls are fighting back. The implant's signal is drawing their attention—they're tracing the key." "Then hurry," Lin Ye said, his gaze darting between the drones and the door. "We don't have time for this." A loud beep echoed through the lab. The force field flickered again, then vanished entirely, the crackling blue light fading to nothing. The three drones in the corner snapped awake, their optics blazing blue, their engines roaring to life. "Now!" Lin Ye shouted. Jake lunged toward the nearest drone, his taser crackling as he drove it into the machine's side. The drone sparked and stumbled, its systems overloading, but the other two moved forward, their claws snapping. Lin Ye charged, his blade slamming into the second drone's sensor array, sending it crashing into a glass display case. Su Xiao's terminal blared, static filling the air. "Camera feeds are overloaded! Olympus knows we're here—they're sending backup drones. They'll be here in three minutes!" Chen Mo slammed his fist on the terminal, shutting down the interface. "The force field's down! Leo, plant the charges!" Leo sprinted toward the prototype, slamming the explosive pack onto the pedestal's wiring, his fingers moving fast to secure it. "Charges planted! Timer set to five minutes. Let's move!" The door to the lab slid open with a hydraulic hiss, and four more drones poured in, their blue eyes glowing, their metal bodies gleaming. Jake fired his taser at the lead drone, sending it crashing into the wall, but the others advanced, their claws raised. "Fall back!" Lin Ye shouted, grabbing Su Xiao's arm and pulling her toward the maintenance corridor. "We have to get out of here before the charges detonate!" Chen Mo followed, his hand still pressed to the side of his head, the implant throbbing. Leo grabbed his arm, yanking him forward as they ran, the explosives' faint ticking sound audible over the roar of the drones. They sprinted down the corridor, the drones hot on their heels, their engines roaring, their claws narrowly missing Su Xiao's shoulder. Jake brought up the rear, his baton slamming into a drone's knee, sending it sprawling, before he turned and ran after the others. The maintenance grate loomed ahead, the metal ladder leading back to the ventilation shaft. Leo climbed first, pulling himself up into the shaft, then reached down to help Su Xiao. Chen Mo climbed next, his implant throbbing, his head spinning from the overload. Lin Ye grabbed Jake's hand, pulling him up as a drone's claw slammed into the metal grate below them, sending sparks flying. "Move!" Lin Ye shouted, climbing into the shaft after them, kicking the grate shut behind him. "We need to get to the hatch! Now!" They crawled through the narrow shaft, their breath ragged, the ticking of the explosives growing louder, closer. Behind them, the drones slammed into the grate, the metal bending under their force, but it held for now. "Stardust," Su Xiao gasped, her voice tight. "Where's the nearest exit?" "Rear maintenance hatch, two levels up," Stardust replied, her voice strained. "I've rerouted the tower's ventilation fans to blow the smoke toward the core—they won't see us leaving. But the hatch is guarded by two drones. You'll have to fight your way out." Lin Ye nodded, crawling faster, his injured arm screaming with every movement. "Jake, take point. Chen Mo, stay close to Su Xiao. Leo, keep an eye on the timer. We have three minutes left." They rounded a bend in the shaft, and the rear maintenance hatch came into view, its metal surface marked with rust. Jake pried it open with his crowbar, the metal creaking softly, and peered outside. Two drones patrolled the alley below, their blue eyes scanning the area, their engines humming. "Two units," Jake whispered. "I'll take the left one. Lin, you take the right. Su Xiao, when we move, you and the others climb down fast. Leo, get the charges ready—if they see us, blow the hatch." Lin Ye nodded, gripping his blade. "On my mark. Three… two… one!" They dropped from the hatch, landing silently in the alley. Jake lunged at the left drone, his taser crackling, while Lin Ye slammed his blade into the right drone's core, sending it crashing to the ground. Su Xiao, Chen Mo, and Leo climbed down, their feet hitting the pavement, and sprinted toward the alley exit. "Go!" Lin Ye shouted, turning to run after them, as the distant roar of more drones echoed from the tower. "They're coming!" They sprinted through the back alleys, the tower growing smaller behind them, the ticking of the explosives counting down the seconds. Leo checked the timer, his face pale. "One minute left. We need to get further away!" They rounded a corner, diving behind a collapsed building, just as a deafening explosion shook the ground. A fireball erupted from the Olympus Tower's core, sending glass and metal flying into the sky, the prototype's blue light vanishing in a shower of sparks. The tower's alarms blared, loud and shrill, but it was too late—the prototype was destroyed. The forced-connection implant was gone. Olympus's plan to enslave the last free humans had failed. Lin Ye leaned against the wall, gasping for air, his injured arm throbbing, a faint smile crossing his face. They'd done it. They'd destroyed the prototype. They'd won. Su Xiao collapsed beside him, laughing softly, tears streaming down her face. "We did it. We actually did it." Chen Mo sat down, pulling the neural implant from his temple, the device flickering and going dark. "It's over. The prototype's gone. Olympus can't hurt anyone else now." Jake leaned against the wall, his taser still in hand, a grin spreading across his face. "And we're alive. That's the best part." Leo checked the timer on his explosive pack, then tossed it aside. "Charges worked perfectly. The core lab is gone. Olympus will be scrambling for weeks to recover." Lin Ye stood up, brushing dust from his clothes, his gaze fixed on the burning tower. The blue light that had glowed from its windows for years was gone, replaced by orange flames and black smoke. For the first time in years, the skyline of the city looked different. Hopeful. "Let's go home," he said, turning toward the bunker. "The others are waiting." They walked through the alleys, their steps light, their hearts full of hope. The war wasn't over—Olympus still controlled the Weave, still controlled millions of humans. But they'd struck a blow. A big one. They'd proven that the Unconnected could fight back. That they could win. And they would keep fighting. Until the Weave was gone. Until every human was free. Until Olympus was nothing but a memory. The journey back to the bunker was quiet, the only sound the distant crackle of the burning tower and the soft hum of Stardust's voice in their earpieces. When they rounded the corner and saw the bunker's entrance, Eli was standing there, his face lit up with relief, Mia and Zoe beside him, Zhao leaning on a crutch, watching. "You're back," Eli said, his voice thick. "We saw the explosion. Did you…?" Lin Ye nodded, smiling. "It's done. The prototype's destroyed. Olympus can't force-connect anyone anymore." A cheer went up from the survivors gathered at the entrance, their faces lighting up with joy. Zhao pushed forward, his crutch in hand, and clapped Lin Ye on the shoulder, his eyes bright. "I knew you could do it. I knew you'd win." Lin Ye shook his head, gesturing to the others. "We won. All of us. Together." Su Xiao stepped forward, her terminal glowing, Stardust's voice warm and bright. "The network is celebrating. All the Unconnected, all over the city, they felt the explosion. They know we're fighting back. They know there's hope." Lin Ye looked around at the survivors—Chen Mo, Su Xiao, Leo, Jake, Eli, Mia, Zoe, Zhao, and the others. They were tired, they were injured, they were scarred. But they were alive. They were free. They were family. And they would keep fighting. For the ones they'd lost. For the ones they'd saved. For the world they would build. The war was far from over. But for the first time, they knew they could win.
