Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 14 — Faceless Verification

The knocking did not stop.

The rhythm did not change.

The force did not waver.

It was as if whoever stood behind the door had no concept of waiting, hesitation, or even reconsidering their actions.

There was only one stable pattern.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lin Xuan stood in the center of the small rented room.

His hand gripped his phone, the screen still glowing.

It no longer displayed anything normal.

Only one status persisted.

📡 LOCAL OBSERVER HANDSHAKE REQUEST

"…He's really at the door," Lin Xuan muttered softly.

His voice was almost drowned out by the air in the room, which felt increasingly heavy.

Long Yuer stood right beside the door.

She didn't move.

She didn't blink.

But her entire body seemed to be in a state of "full alert."

Not physical alert.

But an alert against something unseen.

"Don't open it," she said quietly.

Yet, her voice no longer sounded like a standard warning.

It was more like a boundary that must not be crossed.

Lin Xuan stared at the door for a long time.

"…If we don't open it, will he leave?"

Long Yuer answered without hesitation.

"No."

Silence.

The word hung in the air like something that shouldn't exist in a normal human conversation.

Outside the door, a voice emerged again.

This time, it was closer.

It was no longer just a sound heard from the outside.

It was as if it entered directly into both of their minds.

"Subject Lin Xuan. Verification required."

There was no emotion.

No aggressive pressure.

No tone that could be interpreted as anger or urgency.

Only a statement.

Like a system executing a procedure.

Lin Xuan swallowed hard.

"…He doesn't talk like a human."

Long Yuer replied briefly.

"Because he isn't in human mode."

The air inside the room began to change.

It wasn't heat.

It wasn't cold.

It was as if the space itself began to possess "added mass."

As if every inch of air became heavier for the lungs to hold.

Lin Xuan felt his chest tighten slightly.

"…I'm starting to find it hard to breathe normally…"

Long Yuer raised her hand slightly.

Instantly, something like a transparent layer formed around them.

Not a wall.

Not a shield.

But like a "space within a space."

"He's starting to read the environmental structure," Long Yuer said.

"…Environmental structure?"

"Not just you."

"…But the relationship between you, this room, and the reality surrounding it."

Lin Xuan fell silent.

"…That sounds like he's treating this world like a data system."

Long Yuer stared at the door.

"Because that is exactly how they see it."

Lin Xuan's phone suddenly vibrated violently.

The screen changed without being touched.

📡 LOCAL OBSERVER HANDSHAKE PROTOCOL: ACTIVE

📡 IDENTITY VALIDATION REQUEST: LIN XUAN

📡 BIOMETRIC MATCHING: IN PROGRESS

Lin Xuan stared at the screen.

"…He even entered my phone system without permission."

Long Yuer answered without looking back.

"He didn't enter."

"…He has been connected since the moment you became a target."

Outside the door, a small footstep was heard.

One step back.

Then it stopped again.

As if the Observer was adjusting to the optimal position to read something.

Lin Xuan stared at the door even longer.

"…I have a feeling that if I open this door, something inside me will change."

Long Yuer replied softly.

"That isn't a feeling."

"…That is the initial effect of verification."

Lin Xuan frowned.

"…What exactly is verification?"

Long Yuer didn't answer immediately.

For the first time, there was a small pause before she spoke.

"An adjustment between consciousness data and the system model."

Lin Xuan looked at her.

"…I don't understand."

"If you are not a match," Long Yuer continued, "…then you will not be maintained as an active variable."

That sentence made the room feel narrower.

The air grew heavier.

Lin Xuan felt his thoughts being touched from within.

Not read.

But as if they were being "remapped."

"…This isn't just pressure…"

Long Yuer immediately glared at the door.

"He is performing a core probe."

"…What is he looking for?"

"Whether your consciousness remains stable under direct observation."

Lin Xuan took a small step back.

"…I'm not an experimental object."

Long Yuer looked at him.

"…In their system, you have been an object from the very beginning."

The pressure increased.

It wasn't an attack.

But it felt like something was "deconstructing the definition of self" for Lin Xuan.

His phone changed again.

📡 STABILITY ANALYSIS: 91%

Lin Xuan stared at the number for a long time.

"…He's evaluating me like data?"

Long Yuer replied flatly.

"Because that is what you are becoming here."

Outside the door, the voice appeared again.

Closer.

Clearer.

More stable.

"Subject shows adaptation to observation pressure."

Lin Xuan scowled.

"…He's observing my reaction."

Long Yuer gave a small nod.

"Since the first knock."

Suddenly—

The door opened slightly.

Not pushed.

Not opened mechanically.

But like a "system permission" partially granted.

A small crack appeared.

And from that crack—

There was no face.

No expression.

Only a human silhouette standing there.

Too ordinary.

Too stable.

Too "absent."

And precisely because of that—

The presence felt terrifyingly real.

Lin Xuan stared at it.

"…That's him?"

Long Yuer replied softly.

"…The lead Observer."

Lin Xuan turned slightly.

"…Why is he different?"

"The others collect data."

"…He is the one who executes the judgment."

The Observer spoke again.

"Lin Xuan."

The name was spoken with perfect precision.

No errors.

No pauses.

No emotion.

Lin Xuan felt something strange.

Not fear.

But as if he had just been "permanently marked in the system."

"…He knows me with absolute certainty," Lin Xuan whispered.

Long Yuer stepped forward.

Now she stood directly between Lin Xuan and the door.

"Don't answer," she said.

The Observer stopped speaking.

But the pressure did not stop.

In fact, it intensified.

The air vibrated subtly.

As if the stability of reality itself was being tested.

Lin Xuan felt something deeper than before.

As if his consciousness was being pulled out of his body, bit by bit.

"…This is deeper than before…"

Long Yuer raised her hand.

A second layer formed.

Denser.

More stable.

The pressure was held back.

But it didn't disappear.

Outside the door, the Observer spoke again.

"Interference detected."

Lin Xuan turned to Long Yuer.

"…He knows you're blocking him?"

Long Yuer answered softly.

"He doesn't 'know'."

"…He only reads the final result."

Lin Xuan's phone vibrated again.

📡 FINAL VERIFICATION SEQUENCE INITIATED

Lin Xuan stared at the screen.

"…This still isn't over?"

Long Yuer answered softly.

"This is only the beginning of direct verification."

Outside the door—

The final voice emerged.

Colder.

More certain.

"Subject will be opened."

Lin Xuan immediately tensed up.

"…Opened?"

Long Yuer answered briefly.

"They are going to force full access."

The door moved again.

The crack grew wider.

And for the first time—

The Observer appeared not as a silhouette.

But as a "tangible presence."

Not human.

But not a shadow either.

Something existing between definitions.

Lin Xuan stared.

Silent.

The Observer spoke for the last time.

"Verification begins."

And at that moment—

Lin Xuan's phone status changed.

📡 OBSERVATION → DIRECT INTERACTION

The room seemed to stop.

Not time.

But the rules of its reality.

And from the crack of the open door—

The Observer stepped halfway into the room.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough to make one thing clear:

This was no longer observation.

This was direct contact between the system and human consciousness.
