Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 13 — The Disguised Observer

That night was no different from any other for the world.

The city lights remained lit as usual, vehicles still traversed the main roads, and the sound of life moved forward like a rhythm that never faltered. There were no signs that anything abnormal was occurring.

But for Lin Xuan—

That night was no longer part of the same world.

🌑 THE APARTMENT — A LONELINESS FELT WATCHED

Lin Xuan sat on the floor of his small rented room.

His back rested against the bed.

The phone in his hand glowed dimly.

📡 DIRECT OBSERVER DEPLOYMENT CONFIRMED

That sentence hadn't changed since it first appeared, as if the system refused to leave any room for interpretation.

"...So they've actually come down," Lin Xuan muttered softly.

"...They are no longer just shadows."

Near the window, Long Yuer stood silently.

But this time, her silence was different.

Sharper.

More poised.

Like someone who had already seen the final outcome of a battle before it even began.

"From now on," Long Yuer said, "do not trust anyone who looks too perfect at looking ordinary."

Lin Xuan turned his head.

"...What does 'too perfect' look like?"

"No small mistakes. No spontaneous emotions. No unnecessary reactions."

"...That's almost everyone out there."

Long Yuer answered without hesitation:

"Yes."

Silence.

And for the first time, Lin Xuan truly understood the weight of those words.

🌅 MORNING — A CAMPUS TOO NORMAL TO BE BELIEVED

Morning arrived as usual.

Students walked to campus, laughing, talking, complaining about assignments, discussing food, games, and daily life.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Lin Xuan walked among them.

However, this time, he was no longer part of the crowd.

He was observing.

Someone stood too long at one specific spot.

Someone never changed their facial expression.

Someone never checked their phone at all.

Someone was always within a certain distance of him.

"...If this is a coincidence, there are far too many of them," Lin Xuan whispered.

📚 CLASS — PATTERNS BEGIN TO EMERGE

Inside the classroom, the lecturer explained the material as usual.

Students took notes.

The atmosphere was stable.

But Lin Xuan no longer saw the class as a place of learning.

He saw it as an "observation chamber."

In the back row, a student wasn't taking notes.

Wasn't looking at a phone.

Didn't change their sitting position.

But their eyes...

Were always fixed on Lin Xuan.

"...Him again," Lin Xuan muttered under his breath.

A friend next to him turned.

"What are you talking about?"

Lin Xuan snapped out of it.

"...Nothing."

But in his mind, a conclusion began to take shape:

They don't live here. They are merely placed here.

📱 SUBTLE VIBRATION — FIELD SCAN ACTIVE

Lin Xuan's phone vibrated.

Subtle.

He waited.

A second vibration.

He opened the screen.

📡 Passive Field Scan: ACTIVE

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...They've spread throughout the entire campus area."

Long Yuer appeared beside him without a sound.

"They have been since the moment you became an active target."

"...And I'm only realizing it now?"

"You've only just become sensitive enough."

🌇 AFTERNOON — THE TWO-LAYERED CITY

In the afternoon, Lin Xuan left campus early.

He didn't go home.

He walked through the city.

Large malls.

Main streets.

Small shops.

People busy with their lives.

Yet, Lin Xuan saw something else behind it all.

Like an invisible grid.

And some people...

Were moving according to that pattern.

"...This isn't a coincidence," Lin Xuan muttered.

🕶️ FIRST INCIDENT — LEVEL 1 OBSERVER

In the middle of the street, Lin Xuan stopped.

A man stood across the road.

White shirt.

Briefcase.

An ordinary face.

Yet, there was no irregularity.

No micro-emotions.

No spontaneous social reactions.

"...Observer," Lin Xuan whispered.

Long Yuer nodded.

"Level 1."

"...Do they have a structure?"

"Yes."

⚡ FIRST PRESSURE — IDENTITY PROBE

Suddenly—

Lin Xuan felt a pressure in his mind.

It wasn't pain.

It was as if his consciousness was being touched.

"...This again..."

Long Yuer immediately glared at the man.

"Identity probe."

"...What is he looking for?"

"Your stability as a variable."

Lin Xuan staggered slightly.

"...This is inhuman."

"Because it isn't human."

The pressure vanished.

The man walked away.

🧠 SECOND INCIDENT — MALL FORMATION (LEVEL 2 OBSERVERS)

Nighttime.

Lin Xuan and Long Yuer passed through a mall.

Crowded.

Bright lights.

People moving unconsciously.

But Lin Xuan stopped.

"...Three."

Long Yuer scanned the surroundings.

"Correct."

"...A formation?"

"Area lockdown."

Three points:

The entrance.

The second floor.

The exit path.

"...They are enclosing this space," Lin Xuan muttered.

Long Yuer replied:

"To read your reactions within a closed social space."

⚠️ SECOND PRESSURE — LAYER 2 SYNC

Lin Xuan's phone vibrated again.

📡 Signal Sync Attempt: Layer 2

Lin Xuan grimaced.

"...They're going deeper."

Long Yuer stared intensely.

"This isn't just observation anymore."

"...Then what is it?"

"Consciousness calibration."

Lin Xuan felt something like his mind being "pulled" slightly.

"...This is deeper..."

Long Yuer raised her hand.

And the pressure shattered.

🌌 NIGHT — THE SYSTEM BEGINS LABELING

Lin Xuan sat in his room.

Phone in hand.

The screen lit up on its own.

"Subject stable."

"...I'm like an experimental object," Lin Xuan muttered.

Long Yuer replied:

"Because that is exactly what your position is now."

"Status: Advanced Observation Candidate"

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...Can I no longer get out of this?"

Long Yuer answered quietly:

"...Not yet."

⚠️ THIRD PRESSURE — CORE SYNC

Suddenly—

The air in the room changed.

Lin Xuan felt a pressure far deeper than before.

Like his mind was being pulled out.

Like his identity was being copied.

"...This is different..."

Long Yuer moved quickly.

Subtle energy radiated from her hands.

The pressure broke violently.

Silence.

Lin Xuan took a heavy breath.

"...If you weren't here?"

Long Yuer replied:

"You would no longer have a self."

🚪 END OF CHAPTER 13 — THE OBSERVER ENTERS THE BUILDING

The night grew deeper.

Lin Xuan stared out the window.

Below the apartment building—

A man stood there.

Ordinary.

Too ordinary.

However, Long Yuer's eyes locked onto him instantly.

"...The first one has entered."

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...Entered where?"

Long Yuer replied softly:

"This building."

Footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Slow.

Steady.

Too steady.

One step.

Two steps.

Then, they stopped in front of his door.

Lin Xuan stood up.

"...He's at the door."

Long Yuer didn't move.

"...Yes."

A knock was heard.

Soft.

Orderly.

Unlike a human in a hurry.

A voice from outside said:

"Lin Xuan. We have come for a direct verification."

Lin Xuan stared at the door.

Silent.

Long Yuer whispered:

"...This is a Lead Observer."

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...Is there a difference?"

Long Yuer answered:

"The others observe."

"...This one judges."

A second knock sounded.

And this time—

It felt closer.

More real.

More "present."

Behind that door—

Lay something more than just an observer.

It was a direct evaluator from a system unknown to the world.
