Chapter 20 - Dangerous charm

---

Morning arrived softly, but peace did not come with it, because in a place where three children shared a small space and woke with curious minds and sharp memories, silence never lasted long enough to protect secrets—especially not the kind that had unfolded the night before. The faint golden light of dawn slipped quietly through the narrow openings of the hut, brushing against the wooden floor and slowly illuminating the interior, revealing first the sleeping forms of Theo and Leon, then the small curled shape of Noella, who stirred just moments later with a soft yawn, her fingers instinctively tightening around the edge of her blanket before her eyes fluttered open.

For a brief moment, she simply blinked, adjusting to the light.

Then she sat up.

And froze.

"…Mother," she said softly, her voice still warm with sleep but touched with curiosity, her gaze fixed on something ahead of her.

Elowen, already awake as expected, sat near the fire with a piece of cloth in her hands, her posture straight and composed as if the night had not existed at all, her attention focused on stitching even in the early hours. "…what," she replied calmly, without looking up.

Noella slowly lifted her hand, pointing.

"They are still here."

That was enough to wake the others.

Theo turned first, his movement slow until his eyes landed on the figures near the wall, at which point his expression sharpened instantly, while Leon followed a second later, blinking once before sitting up completely, his earlier drowsiness gone in an instant.

Because there was no misunderstanding.

Kael and Riven were still inside the hut.

Kael leaned against the wall, arms crossed even in sleep like he was stubborn even when unconscious, while Riven sat not far from him, his posture more controlled, though clearly not someone who had left during the night. The quiet realization lasted only a heartbeat before it shifted into something far more dangerous.

Amusement.

Theo's lips curved slowly, his eyes lighting up as he leaned slightly toward Leon, who immediately covered his mouth, shoulders shaking faintly as he tried not to laugh, while Noella—completely unbothered—clapped her hands softly, her smile bright and sweet in a way that made everything worse.

"They stayed," she said happily.

Kael's eyes snapped open.

"…I was awake," he said instantly.

Theo didn't hesitate. "You were sleeping."

"I was resting."

"You were snoring," Leon added calmly.

"I do not snore."

"You did."

"I did not."

Meanwhile, Riven opened his eyes slowly, far calmer, far more composed, as if waking up in Elowen's hut was not something unusual at all, his movements smooth as he straightened slightly, his gaze shifting first toward the children, then—

To her.

"…good morning," he said.

But this time—

It wasn't neutral.

It was softer.

Lower.

Intentional.

Theo blinked. "…Father Riven sounds different."

Leon nodded slowly. "He does."

Noella smiled. "Father Riven stayed nicely."

Kael sat up fully. "We did not stay."

Theo pointed at him. "You're still here."

"That's different."

Leon tilted his head. "It's the same."

"No, it's not."

Elowen didn't react.

Didn't question.

Didn't acknowledge the situation beyond what mattered.

"…if you're awake," she said calmly, "leave."

Simple.

Direct.

Unmoved.

Kael blinked. "…that's cold."

"It's morning."

"That doesn't change anything."

"It changes everything."

Riven stood.

Immediately.

No argument.

But before moving toward the door—

He stepped slightly closer to her.

Not enough to invade.

But enough to matter.

"…you didn't sleep," he said quietly, his gaze lowering briefly to the cloth in her hands before returning to her face, his voice softer than before, smoother, carrying a subtle warmth that had not been there previously.

"I slept," she replied.

"…not enough."

Kael turned sharply. "…what are you doing."

Riven ignored him.

Completely.

"…you should rest today," he continued, his tone calm but edged with something unmistakably intentional now, something closer, something more personal. "You don't need to do everything alone."

Silence.

Theo leaned toward Leon. "…he's doing something."

Leon nodded slowly. "He is."

Noella smiled brightly. "Father Riven is being nice."

Kael frowned deeply. "He's not being nice."

Riven's gaze didn't leave Elowen. "…I can gather materials," he added, quieter now. "Better ones."

A pause.

Then—

"…for you."

That was new.

That was not subtle anymore.

Kael stepped forward immediately. "Okay—no."

Riven finally glanced at him. "No what."

"You don't get to say things like that."

"…like what."

"That."

"That is vague."

"You know exactly what you said."

Elowen glanced between them briefly.

Then back to her work.

"…do what you want," she said.

Riven nodded once, a faint hint of satisfaction flickering through his expression, barely visible but there, before he stepped back.

"…as you wish."

Kael stared at him.

"…you're doing that on purpose."

Riven tilted his head slightly. "Doing what."

"…talking like that."

"I am speaking normally."

"You are not."

"I am."

"You are not."

Theo whispered, "Father Kael is losing again."

Leon nodded. "Very fast."

Noella added softly, "Father Kael should try harder."

Kael froze.

"…try harder?"

Riven didn't even look at him this time.

Which somehow made it worse.

Elowen stood.

That ended everything.

Immediately.

"Leave."

Riven moved first, calm as ever, stepping toward the door without hesitation, but not before giving her one last glance—brief, quiet, but deliberate.

"…don't overwork yourself," he said softly.

Then he left.

Kael didn't move.

"…I was going to say that," he muttered.

Noella tilted her head. "But you didn't."

Theo added, "He said it first."

Leon nodded. "And better."

Kael exhaled sharply. "…I don't like this."

Elowen didn't look at him.

"…then leave faster next time."

Silence.

Theo grinned.

Leon smirked.

Noella giggled softly.

Kael pointed at all of them. "…this is not over."

Then he left.

---

The door closed.

Silence lasted one second.

Then—

The children burst into laughter.

"They got caught!" Theo said.

"Both of them," Leon added.

"Together," Noella finished happily.

"They stayed all night," Theo said.

"Mother didn't even react," Leon added.

Noella smiled sweetly. "Mother is strong."

Elowen didn't respond.

But—

For just a moment—

Her hand paused.

Before continuing again.

---

Outside—

Kael turned immediately. "…you did that on purpose."

Riven glanced at him calmly. "You noticed."

"…of course I noticed."

"…good."

Silence.

Then Kael crossed his arms, jaw tightening slightly.

"…I don't like this."

Riven's response came quietly.

"…I know."

---

And just like that—

The game changed.

Not hidden anymore.

Not subtle.

But still—

Unspoken.
