Chapter 19 - They both returned

The night had settled deeply over the clearing, wrapping everything in a quiet stillness that felt heavier than usual, as if even the forest had chosen to rest after the long day that had passed. Inside the hut, the fire had been reduced to a low glow, its soft light flickering gently against the wooden walls, barely illuminating the space but enough to reveal the small figures of the children sleeping peacefully together. Theo had shifted closer to Leon at some point, their breathing slow and steady, while Noella had curled near the edge of the bedding, her small hand still lightly gripping a piece of cloth from earlier, as if she refused to fully let go of the new comfort she had received.

But not everyone was asleep.

Elowen Astra sat near the dim fire, her posture straight despite the late hour, her attention focused entirely on the cloth in her hands as she continued stitching, the quiet rhythm of the needle moving through fabric the only sound inside the hut. The pile beside her had grown again—small garments, carefully made, adjusted, refined—because for her, "enough" had not yet been reached. If there was more she could do, she would do it, regardless of the hour, regardless of fatigue.

Her movements slowed slightly for a moment.

Then resumed.

Because she had already sensed it.

Outside—

A presence.

Then another.

Two different footsteps.

Approaching separately.

Pausing.

Hesitating.

From opposite sides of the hut.

---

Kael stood near the left side of the entrance, arms crossed but posture unusually restrained, his usual confidence dulled by the quiet of the night as he stared at the closed door like it had personally challenged him. "…they're asleep," he muttered under his breath, more to convince himself than anything else, his gaze flicking once toward the nearby huts before returning. "…I'm just checking."

At the same time—

On the opposite side—

Riven stood just outside the edge of the light, his expression calm but his presence deliberate, as if he had already calculated every possible outcome of this decision and still chose to proceed. "…the light is still on," he murmured quietly, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed the faint glow escaping from the cracks of the hut. "…she is awake."

Silence stretched between them.

Neither of them aware—

That the other was there.

For a moment longer, both hesitated.

Then—

They moved.

At the same time.

---

The door opened.

Both of them stepped in.

And froze.

Because they weren't alone.

And they definitely weren't alone with sleeping children.

Elowen didn't look up immediately.

She simply continued sewing.

"…close the door," she said calmly.

Silence.

Kael turned his head slowly.

Riven stood still.

Then—

They both closed the door.

Together.

Awkwardly.

Theo shifted slightly in his sleep.

Everyone froze.

Noella made a soft sound, turning over.

Then—

Silence again.

Kael exhaled quietly. "…this is bad."

Riven replied, equally quiet, "…unexpected."

Elowen finally spoke again.

"…why are you both here."

Her tone was not loud.

But it didn't need to be.

Kael scratched the back of his neck. "…I thought everyone was asleep."

Riven added calmly, "…the same assumption."

She looked up.

Slowly.

Her gaze moved from Kael—

To Riven—

Then back to the cloth in her hands.

"…clearly not."

Silence.

Kael stepped forward slightly. "…you're still working?"

"Yes."

"At this hour?"

"Yes."

"…why."

She didn't hesitate.

"They need more."

A pause.

Riven glanced at the growing pile of clothes beside her, his gaze sharpening slightly as he took in the details—the size variations, the adjustments, the extra layers. "…you are making spares."

"Yes."

Kael frowned. "…they already have clothes."

"They have one set."

"…that's enough."

"No."

Silence.

Then—

"…you don't stop, do you," Kael muttered.

"No."

Riven nodded slightly. "…consistent."

Kael glanced at him. "Stop sounding impressed again."

"I am observing."

"You are impressed."

"I am."

"…I don't like that."

Elowen continued sewing.

Unbothered.

Or appearing to be.

Then—

Kael stepped closer.

Too close.

Close enough to see her hands clearly as the needle moved through the fabric with controlled precision.

"…you're doing it again," he said quietly.

She didn't look up. "Doing what."

"Making it look easy."

"It isn't."

Riven stepped closer too.

From the other side.

"…your hand control is stable even under low light," he noted.

Kael immediately frowned. "Why are you analyzing her like that?"

"Because it is accurate."

"It sounds like admiration."

"It is."

Silence.

Elowen paused.

Just for a second.

Then continued sewing.

But—

Her movements were slightly slower now.

"…both of you," she said.

They straightened slightly.

"…leave."

Immediate reaction.

"No," Kael said.

Riven added, "…not yet."

She looked up again.

This time—

Sharper.

"…this is not your hut."

Kael crossed his arms. "We built half of everything here."

"That does not include this space."

Riven added calmly, "…we are not disturbing."

"You are."

"We are quiet."

"You are present."

Silence.

Theo shifted again in his sleep.

Mumbling slightly.

"…Mother…"

Everything froze.

Elowen's gaze flicked toward him instantly.

He settled again.

Silence returned.

Then—

Noella's small voice, barely awake, whispered softly—

"…Mother… don't go…"

Her tiny hand moved slightly.

Reaching.

Without opening her eyes.

Elowen stilled.

Just for a moment.

Then gently reached back, adjusting the cloth near Noella so her hand rested comfortably again.

"…sleep," she said quietly.

Noella relaxed.

Silence returned.

But something had shifted.

Kael noticed it first.

His voice dropped slightly. "…you're tired."

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

"I am."

Riven added softly, "…you have been working continuously."

She didn't respond.

Instead—

She picked up another piece of cloth.

Kael frowned. "…you're still going?"

"Yes."

"…that's unreasonable."

"It's necessary."

Silence.

Then—

Kael sighed.

"…give me one."

She froze.

"…no."

"I won't ruin it."

"You will."

"…I'll try."

Riven added, "…I will assist."

She looked at both of them.

Longer this time.

Measuring.

Then—

Slowly—

She handed one piece.

To Riven.

And one—

To Kael.

"…if you ruin it," she said quietly, "you fix it."

Kael smirked slightly. "…deal."

Riven nodded. "…acceptable."

The three of them sat there.

In the dim light.

Working.

Badly.

Quietly.

Together.

Kael's stitches were still uneven.

Riven's still too tight.

And Elowen—

Fixed both without comment.

But this time—

She didn't take the cloth away immediately.

She let them try.

And that—

Was new.

---

Outside—

The night remained silent.

But inside—

Something had changed again.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But undeniable.
