Chapter 4
Even if by some absolute miracle I was able to slip past her and dive back into the water, I had no idea just how far down in the sea we were.
Without a boat or any way to breathe, I wasn't sure I would even be able to make it back to the surface before my lungs gave out or the pressure crushed my ribs.
"Y-You..."
My grim thoughts were suddenly interrupted by her voice, which was now filled with an overwhelming sense of disbelief and shock that made her seem almost human for a second.
I blinked my eyes, glancing back at the mermaid who was now staring at me with a completely different look in her eyes.
It wasn't hunger or amusement anymore, but pure, unadulterated shock.
"You can understand Mertongue?" she asked, her voice echoing through the chamber, her gaze scanning me as if she were seeing me for the first time.
'Mertongue? Wait, isn't that supposed to be the universal language of the merfolk?' I pondered to myself.
But what did she mean when she said I knew Mertongue, when I had never studied the thing in my life and certainly wasn't from this world?
As far as I could remember, that hack of an author never actually gave any specific teachings or translations regarding the language in the novel, usually just describing it as vaguely as they went.
To me, I felt like I was just speaking my own language and she was doing the same, yet to her, I was somehow speaking the ancient, secret tongue of the deep sea.
'If that's not the case, then what else could possibly explain this surreal situation I've found myself in?' I thought to myself as a shocking idea began to take root in the back of my mind, pushing aside the immediate terror of being eaten.
'Does it mean that for some reason, I can actually understand her perfectly?!' The sheer absurdity of the realization, finally snapped something inside me, and before I could stop myself, a manic sound bubbled up from my throat.
"Hahaha!!!" I laughed out loud, the sound echoing sharply against the damp stone walls of the cavern and effectively frightening the mermaid a bit, as she flinched back and narrowed her eyes at my sudden outburst.
Seeing the weird, almost concerned look on her face, I quickly realized how insane I must appear to a literal man-eater, and I fought to compose myself before she decided to end the show permanently.
"Hehehe, please forgive my unsightly display, it's just been a very long day for me, but..." I said, trying to sound as polite and non-threatening as humanly possible while sitting amidst a pile of human remains.
"Since it's clear that we can actually understand each other and hold a conversation, why not just let me live a bit longer—" I started, hoping to appeal to her curiosity.
"Nonsense." She sneered at my remark, her voice cutting through my plea like a cold blade as she looked down at me with utter contempt.
"For a human, you sure are a pitiful creature, and do you truly believe that just because you can converse in our natural tongue, that's reason enough for me to let you live and breathe in my home?"
"Hehehe, of course not, that's definitely not what I was trying to say at all!" I quickly spoke up, my words tripping over each other in a desperate rush because I was genuinely afraid she'd lunge forward and tear my throat out if I didn't keep talking.
"I'm just saying, wouldn't it be far more amusing for you to have a human you can completely control, someone you can order around as you pleased without them ever talking back... umm... perhaps I could become your pet? Or maybe even a servant?" I offered, racking my brain for anything that might make me more valuable alive than dead.
"I mean, I'm a really good cook you know, and if you let me stay, I could help make your daily meals even tastier than raw meat by using techniques you've never even dreamed of!" I tried making my proposal sound as enticing as possible, pouring every bit of salesmanship I had into my voice, but the moment she began making her way out of the pool and onto the land, my heart dropped several feet into my stomach.
"Ever had someone call you master?! I hear from the stories in my world that it's quite a pleasant experience for those in charge, and if you want, I could even give you a professional massage to help you relax!" My voice cracked noticeably due to the sheer fear of seeing her approach the shore.
"A deep tissue massage perhaps?! Or maybe you would prefer I help you release all the stress in your tail by working out the knots in your muscles? I promise I won't make a single mistake, I'm a fast learner!" My voice continued to rise in pitch and volume as I scrambled further back against the pile of bones.
To my absolute horror, upon coming onto the dry land of the cave, her powerful shark tail fin began to shift and ripple, morphing in a matter of seconds into a pair of perfectly shaped human legs.
With her new limbs, she calmly approached me, that same wicked, predatory smile playing on her lips as she watched me squirm.
'F*CK! Nothing I'm saying is working on her! This bitch is just too crazy and focused on her stomach to listen to reason!!!' I screamed internally, my eyes darting around for any possible exit that didn't involve her teeth.
'F*CK! F*CK! F*CK! F*CK! I don't want to go out like this, being chewed on in a dark cave.'
Without even realizing it, my heart rate had accelerated to levels I never even imagined were humanly possible, thumping so hard against my ribs that it felt like it might burst. In a moment of pure, unadulterated desperation, I clenched my fists in frustration and lunged forward at her, my eyes filled with a wild, cornered look that probably looked more like madness than bravery.
Her smirk only grew wider as she watched me lunge toward her, her posture remaining relaxed as if she were simply watching a particularly interesting insect struggle in a web.
'Damnit! She's totally toying with me, she knows I can't do anything to hurt her!' I thought to myself as the distance between us closed.
Mid-jump toward her, I stopped some distance from her and changed direction with a desperate heave of my body and leaped back into the water of the pool, quickly diving and swimming as deep as I could manage.
'No matter what she says or does, she's still a mermaid at heart, and even if she has human legs now, she's simply too strong for me to beat in a fair fight!' I felt the stinging urge to cry as I swam for my life in the dark water, but I suppressed it because I literally had no more options left to choose from.
Urck!
My entire body convulsed with a sudden, sharp pain after swimming into the dark, shadowed spot at the bottom of the pool, where I felt a powerful, invisible current suddenly knock me back.
The sheer force of the underwater pressure hit me like a physical blow from a giant, causing my internal organs to tremble from the impact as the air was nearly forced from my lungs.
I coughed up a mouthful of blood that dissipated into the dark water, and my vision began to turn a hazy, flickering red as the light from the cave's air pocket faded away.
But right after the blow, I felt something grab hold of me and pull me back with a terrifying amount of force, and a tragic, defeated look emerged on my face even under the water because I knew exactly who that must have been.
