Chapter 7.
"Coming... mistress," I forced myself to say, the words feeling heavy and strange in my throat as I used my two hands to crawl awkwardly toward the edge of the pool.
The rocky floor of the cave was cold and abrasive against my palms, but what really occupied my mind was the bizarre sensation of my lower half trailing behind me like a heavy, useless appendage.
'Will I ever get my legs back, or am I doomed to slide around like a slug for the rest of my life?' I wondered to myself, feeling a pang of genuine loss as my new tail fin dragged along the floor.
It was hard to imagine ever walking again when my body felt so fundamentally altered, and the sight of my greyish-black scales glistening in the dim light only served to deepen my existential dread.
Eventually, I reached the lip of the stone ledge and eased myself into the pool, expecting the water to feel freezing and restrictive just like it had when I was being drowned earlier.
However, the moment my entire body was submerged, I felt completely invigorated, as if a powerful, life-giving buff had been thrown onto my body by some unseen gaming system.
The exhaustion that had been weighing down my spirit seemed to evaporate instantly, replaced by a surge of vitality that made every fiber of my being energetic.
'So this is what it feels like for a merfolk to be in their natural element,' I thought, my eyes widening as I tried moving my large tail fin for the first time in the water.
Though my movements were admittedly clumsy and jerky at first, I surprisingly quickly got the hang of it, realizing that the tail responded to my intent with greater ease that my human legs never could have achieved.
Within a few moments, I was able to move around quite well, hovering in the water and feeling a strange sense of weightlessness that was actually quite pleasant.
"I see you've gotten used to your new form much faster than I expected," I heard a voice call out from below me, originating from the darker, deeper region of the pool.
Strange enough, the area didn't actually seem dark to me at all anymore, because it appeared that my new eyes were able to see through the murky depths.
As if I had been granted high-definition night vision. Below me was naturally my mistress, who was swimming in place with effortless grace while staring back up at me with a light smile on her lips.
My eyes, however, were currently focused far behind her, specifically at the back wall of the underwater chamber where I could now clearly see what looked like two distinct, rocky openings leading out into the ocean.
Now that I was a merfolk myself, I could feel the subtle movements of the water more keenly than ever before, and the sensory information I was receiving helped me realize exactly why I had been brought into the nest without harm the first time.
The layout of the cave was a literal death trap designed to filter out intruders or unsuspecting prey who didn't know the secret of the tunnels.
'So the opening on the left has a gentle, inviting current that leads safely inside, while the other one was the one with the strong, crushing current that nearly killed me,' I realized, a chill running down my spine.
'I must say, it's quite devious of her to set it up this way, because if anyone she captured or any curious predator wasn't able to see the difference between the two holes, they risked killing themselves without even realizing it.' I shifted my gaze back to the mermaid, and I noticed that her smile had long since transitioned into a sharp smirk, as if she was genuinely amused by the fact that I had finally figured out the secret of her lair.
She didn't say a word to confirm my suspicions, however; instead, she turned her lithe body with a flick of her tail and swam through the tunnel with the gentle current, beckoning me to follow her into the unknown.
Not wanting to irritate her or give her a reason to test out her teeth on me again, I quickly followed after her, and soon the both of us were swimming through the narrow underwater tunnel with her taking the lead and me trailing cautiously behind.
The tunnel was long and winding, but after a short while of navigating the smooth stone walls, we finally exited the passage and emerged into the open sea.
'Woah...' My eyes couldn't help but widen in absolute shock after coming out, for what I saw before me was nothing short of a marvelous, breathtaking spectacle that made my previous life feel dull and grey by comparison.
We had emerged into a beautiful, vibrant ocean world filled with countless schools of colorful fish swimming about in a perfect, undisturbed natural scenery brimming with life.
The coral reefs were glowing with soft, bioluminescent hues, and the sunlight filtered down through the surface in long, dancing rays that made the entire seascape look like a dream of a paradise.
A view like this would no doubt be the ultimate dream of countless wildlife photographers back on Earth, yet here I was, experiencing it first hand.
"Don't just gawk at the scenery like a mindless guppy, you better not forget exactly why we're out here in the first place," her sudden voice snapped through the water, vibrating against my skin and quickly pulling me out of my daze.
"It would be best for you to keep up with me if you don't want to get lost, you hear me?" she said with a hint of warning before turning and swimming off into the blue.
I swam in place for a few seconds, watching as she began to cover ground with frightening ease, her pink hair trailing behind her like a banner as she moved further and further away from the cave entrance.
Thoughts of making a break for it now began crossing my mind, considering that I was finally out in the open and could theoretically swim in the opposite direction until I found land.
'No... It's far too dangerous to try that now, especially since I have no idea where I am or what's lurking in the deeper trenches,' I quickly shut those thoughts down before they could tempt me into a fatal mistake, and I began swimming right after her as fast as I could.
'Wait, isn't she moving a bit too fast for a casual swim? It's more like she's a heat-seeking missile,' I thought, struggling to catch my breath as I poured all my energy into chasing after her retreating figure.
At the rate she was going, she could easily be classified as a living torpedo, and I found myself straining every new muscle in my tail just to keep her within my sight.
