Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9: Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

The rooftop was off-limits.

Which was exactly why Jae-Hyun chose it.

Wind swept across the open space, carrying the distant noise of the campus below. From up here, everything looked smaller—simpler. Lies were easier to spot when you stood above them.

Jae-Hyun leaned against the railing, his gaze fixed on the far skyline. His mind wasn't on the view. It was on the message from the night before.

Start with the school archives.

Someone was watching him.

Helping him.

Or leading him into something worse.

"You shouldn't be here."

The voice came from behind—calm, steady.

Jae-Hyun didn't turn. "Then leave."

A quiet scoff followed. "Not happening."

Footsteps approached, unhurried. A tall boy stepped into view, hands in his pockets, eyes sharp with quiet amusement.

"Han Ji-Won," he said. "You're the new transfer everyone's whispering about."

Silence.

Jae-Hyun finally turned slightly, studying him. Ji-Won didn't look intimidated. That alone made him… different.

"And?" Jae-Hyun replied.

Ji-Won smirked faintly. "And I wanted to see if the rumors were true."

"And?"

"They are," another voice joined.

This one softer. Observant.

A second boy stepped forward, adjusting his glasses slightly. "You don't talk. You don't react. You watch everything."

Jae-Hyun's eyes flicked toward him.

"Seo Min-Kyu," he introduced himself calmly. "You're interesting."

Jae-Hyun didn't respond.

But he didn't leave either.

That was enough.

Ji-Won leaned against the railing beside him. "Relax. We're not here to interrogate you."

"You already are."

Min-Kyu smiled faintly. "Fair point.

A brief silence settled between them—not awkward, not forced. Just measured.

Then Ji-Won spoke again. "You're not like the others here."

"Neither are you," Jae-Hyun replied.

That earned a quiet laugh.

"Good," Ji-Won said. "I'd be disappointed if you were blind."

Min-Kyu's eyes narrowed slightly. "Things are… complicated in this school."

Jae-Hyun's gaze sharpened.

"Complicated how?"

Ji-Won exchanged a brief look with Min-Kyu before answering. "You'll figure it out."

Jae-Hyun didn't like vague answers.

But before he could press further—

"Jae-Hyun!"

The voice echoed across the rooftop.

Bright.

Loud.

Unavoidable.

Ji-Won blinked. "And who is that?"

Jae-Hyun closed his eyes briefly.

Of course.

Soo-Min appeared moments later, slightly out of breath, her hair shifting in the wind as she stepped onto the rooftop like she owned it.

"There you are!" she said, walking straight toward him. "I've been looking everywhere for you!"

Ji-Won raised a brow, clearly amused. Min-Kyu adjusted his glasses, observing quietly.

Jae-Hyun didn't move. "Why?"

"Because you disappeared," she replied like it was obvious. Then she glanced at the two boys beside him. "Oh… you have friends now?"

Silence.

Ji-Won chuckled. "Friends? That's new."

Soo-Min smiled brightly. "Hi! I'm Soo-Min."

"Han Ji-Won," he replied easily.

"Seo Min-Kyu."

She nodded, satisfied, then turned back to Jae-Hyun like the others didn't exist. "You didn't tell me you hang out here."

"I don't."

"But you are."

He exhaled slowly.

"You shouldn't be here."

She tilted her head. "You're here."

"That's different."

"Why?"

"…It just is."

Soo-Min folded her arms, studying him like a puzzle she refused to give up on. "You always say things like that without explaining."

"Because you don't need explanations."

"I do."

"No."

"Yes."

Ji-Won let out a quiet laugh. "She's persistent."

Jae-Hyun ignored him.

Soo-Min stepped closer. "What are you even doing up here?"

"Nothing."

"That's a lie."

He looked at her.

Cold.

Sharp.

"Go back to class."

She didn't move.

"No."

Silence stretched.

Wind rushed past them.

Tension tightened.

Jae-Hyun's patience thinned. "You're annoying."

"And you've said that before," she replied easily. "It doesn't work."

Ji-Won watched the exchange with interest. "You don't talk to anyone… but you talk to her."

"I don't."

"You just did."

Jae-Hyun's jaw tightened slightly.

Min-Kyu spoke quietly, almost to himself. "She doesn't react the way others do."

Soo-Min blinked. "How am I supposed to react?"

"Most people would leave," he said.

She smiled. "I'm not most people."

Jae-Hyun looked at her again.

For a second longer than usual.

Then looked away.

The bell rang in the distance.

None of them moved immediately.

Something had shifted.

Not obvious.

But real.

Ji-Won pushed himself off the railing. "We should go."

Min-Kyu nodded.

As they walked past Jae-Hyun, Ji-Won spoke quietly, just low enough for him to hear.

"Be careful who you trust.

Jae-Hyun didn't respond.

But his eyes darkened slightly.

Soo-Min stayed.

Of course she did.

"You're really strange," she said, stepping beside him.

No reply.

"But I like it."

Silence.

She leaned slightly against the railing, looking out at the view. "You know… you don't have to be alone all the time."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm not."

She turned to him, her expression softer now. "Then why does it feel like you are?"

That—

Caught him off guard.

Just for a second.

Jae-Hyun looked away.

"…You think too much."

Soo-Min smiled faintly. "No. I just say what I see."

Footsteps echoed faintly as students moved below.

Time was passing.

But neither of them moved yet.

Somewhere between silence and tension—

Something unfamiliar settled.

And neither of them noticed—

From the far end of the rooftop entrance—

Someone had been watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

Because in a place like Elysian Crown Academy—

No connection was ever truly private.

And some lines—

Should never be crossed.
