Chapter 11 - CHAPTER 11: Unwanted Closeness

Something about the academy felt… off.

Jae-Hyun noticed it the moment he stepped through the gates. Nothing had visibly changed—students still moved in groups, laughter still echoed across the courtyard—but beneath it all, there was a shift. Subtle, but real.

Eyes lingered longer than they should.

Conversations quieted when he passed.

It wasn't fear.

It was attention.

And attention meant risk.

Jae-Hyun walked forward without hesitation, his expression calm, unreadable, as if none of it mattered. But his mind was already working, already breaking things apart, searching for patterns.

So it's starting…

"Jae-Hyun!"

He didn't stop immediately.

But he didn't ignore it either.

Soo-Min caught up to him quickly, slightly out of breath but smiling as if she hadn't just run across half the courtyard.

"You left yesterday without saying anything," she said, falling into step beside him. "That's rude."

"You talked enough for both of us."

She smiled wider. "So you were listening."

"I notice noise."

"That still means you noticed me."

He didn't answer, but his silence didn't push her away the way it used to.

That was enough for her.

---

By the time they entered the classroom, Soo-Min had already claimed her place.

Right beside him.

Her bag rested neatly on the desk as if it had always belonged there.

Jae-Hyun stopped briefly, looking at it, then at her.

"You're not even pretending anymore."

She looked up innocently. "Pretending what?"

"That this isn't your seat."

She shrugged. "It is now."

He could have argued.

Could have told her to move.

But instead, he simply sat down.

Soo-Min watched him carefully, something satisfied flickering in her eyes before she looked away.

---

"You're quieter today," she said after a while, resting her chin lightly on her hand.

"I'm always quiet."

"Not like this," she murmured. "You look like you're thinking about something heavy."

Jae-Hyun's gaze shifted slightly toward her.

"You should try it."

She let out a small laugh. "No, thanks. Thinking too much seems stressful."

"It is."

"Then why do it?"

He didn't answer.

Because some things couldn't be explained—not to her.

---

The door opened, and the atmosphere shifted again.

Han Ji-Won walked in first, his usual calm confidence intact, followed by Seo Min-Kyu, whose eyes moved quickly across the room, observing more than most would notice.

Their attention landed on Jae-Hyun.

Then briefly on Soo-Min.

Then back again.

Ji-Won smirked faintly as he approached. "You've been busy."

Jae-Hyun didn't react.

Min-Kyu spoke instead, his tone quieter but sharper. "People are starting to notice."

"They always do."

"Not like this."

That made Jae-Hyun look at him properly.

There was no exaggeration in Min-Kyu's expression.

Only certainty.

Ji-Won leaned slightly against a nearby desk, lowering his voice. "You moved too fast. Business deals, connections… it doesn't go unnoticed in a place like this."

"And?" Jae-Hyun asked.

"And people here don't like surprises," Ji-Won replied.

Soo-Min glanced between them, clearly confused. "What are you all talking about?"

No one answered.

She frowned slightly. "You're all rude."

Ji-Won chuckled under his breath. "You'll survive."

"I'm not trying to survive," she said. "I just want to understand."

Min-Kyu studied her quietly for a moment. "That might be the problem."

She blinked. "What does that mean?"

But again—

No answer came

The rest of the day dragged on, though Jae-Hyun barely noticed the passing time.

His attention kept shifting.

The classroom.

The corridors.

The small, almost invisible movements that most people would ignore.

Someone was watching.

Not openly.

But enough.

And every time his thoughts started to sharpen—

Soo-Min's voice pulled him back.

By lunchtime, he stood up without a word and left.

He needed space.

Silence.

Distance.

But he barely made it halfway down the corridor before—

"Jae-Hyun!"

He stopped.

A quiet exhale left him before he turned.

Soo-Min approached him again, her expression unchanged, as if nothing in the world could make her hesitate.

"Why do you keep walking away?" she asked.

"I'm not walking away."

"You are," she insisted. "You always leave when I'm talking."

"I'm busy."

"With what?"

"Things you wouldn't understand."

She didn't respond immediately this time.

Instead, she studied him.

Really studied him.

"Then help me understand," she said softly.

That—

Was new.

Jae-Hyun looked at her, his expression unreadable, but something in his gaze shifted.

She wasn't teasing.

She wasn't playing.

For once—

She was serious.

"You shouldn't get involved," he said quietly.

Her brows furrowed. "In what?"

He hesitated.

For a moment too long.

And she noticed.

"You see?" she said gently. "You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Say things like they matter… but never explain them."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Because I can't."

"Or because you don't want to?"

Silence settled between them, heavier than before.

From across the courtyard, Ji-Won watched the exchange with narrowed eyes.

"He's changing," he muttered.

Min-Kyu adjusted his glasses. "He's reacting."

"To her," Ji-Won added.

Min-Kyu didn't deny it.

"That's dangerous."

"It depends," Min-Kyu said quietly. "On what she becomes to him.

Back in the corridor, Soo-Min sighed softly.

"You're really difficult."

"And you don't stop talking."

She smiled faintly. "But you didn't walk away this time."

Jae-Hyun didn't answer.

Because she was right.

For a brief moment, neither of them moved.

The noise of the school faded into the background, leaving only the quiet tension between them.

Unfamiliar.

Unsteady.

Real.

Then Jae-Hyun stepped back.

Distance.

Necessary distance.

"You should go back," he said.

Soo-Min tilted her head slightly, watching him.

But this time—

She didn't argue.

"Fine," she said softly. "But I'm not giving up."

He didn't respond.

But as she turned and walked away, something lingered.

Something he didn't quite understand.

And as he stood there, alone again—

He felt it.

That same presence.

Watching.

Closer now.

This time, he didn't ignore it.

His gaze shifted slightly, scanning the area without turning his head.

Someone was there.

He was sure of it.

And for the first time—

Jae-Hyun realized something unsettling.

It wasn't just him being watched anymore.

Soo-Min was too.
