I shouldn't have looked back.
But I did.
And he was still there.
Standing in the middle of the hallway like nothing around him mattered. Like the noise, the movement, the people—none of it touched him.
Students passed by, but not too close.
It wasn't obvious at first.
No one ran. No one stared too long.
But they adjusted.
Just slightly.
Just enough.
And that was when I understood.
He wasn't just another student.
He was the kind people noticed… and avoided at the same time.
I quickly turned my head away, my grip tightening around my bag as I forced my feet to keep moving.
"Don't get involved," I muttered quietly.
First day.
Too early for problems.
Too early for people like him.
The hallway stretched longer than I expected, polished floors reflecting every step I took. Conversations filled the air, but they all felt distant, like I was walking through something I didn't belong in.
Then the whispers started.
Low. Careful. Curious.
"Did you see that?"
"She bumped into him…"
"Does she not know who that is?"
I slowed down without meaning to.
Great.
Attention.
Exactly what I didn't want.
I kept walking, pretending I couldn't hear them, but their voices followed anyway.
"She's new, obviously."
"She's brave… or stupid."
I almost scoffed.
If only they knew—I wasn't trying to be anything.
I just didn't see him.
That was it.
But clearly… that didn't matter here.
By the time I finally found my classroom, I was already exhausted.
Not physically.
Mentally.
I stood outside the door for a second, taking a quiet breath before pushing it open.
The room fell into a brief silence.
Of course it did.
New student.
Late entrance.
Perfect combination.
I could feel eyes on me as I stepped inside, but I kept my expression neutral.
"Sorry I'm late," I said simply.
The teacher glanced at me over her glasses, then nodded.
"You must be Mira."
I blinked slightly.
Word travels fast.
"Yes."
She gestured toward an empty seat.
"Take your seat. We've already started."
I didn't argue.
Didn't ask questions.
I just walked to the seat, ignoring the stares that followed me, and sat down quietly.
For a moment… it was calm.
No whispers.
No tension.
Just the sound of the teacher's voice and the faint scratching of pens against paper.
Peace.
Or at least… something close to it.
"You look like you've already had a long day."
The voice was soft.
Unexpected.
I turned slightly.
He was sitting beside me.
I hadn't even noticed when he got there.
Messy hair. Relaxed posture. And a small smile that didn't feel forced.
It was… easy.
"I just got here," I replied quietly.
"And it's already that bad?" he asked, amusement flickering in his eyes.
I hesitated for a second… then sighed.
"You have no idea."
That earned a small laugh from him.
"I might," he said. "This place isn't exactly… welcoming."
I studied him for a moment.
He didn't look like he struggled to belong.
If anything… he looked like he fit in too well.
"And yet, you seem comfortable," I pointed out.
He shrugged slightly.
"You get used to things."
That didn't sound comforting.
The class continued, but I found it harder to focus.
Not because of the lesson.
But because of the strange shift in my day.
First… the guy in the hallway.
Now… this one.
Two completely different energies.
And somehow, I'd already crossed paths with both.
It felt like the beginning of something.
Something I wasn't sure I wanted.
As the bell rang, students immediately started packing up, conversations rising all around me.
I stayed seated for a second, pretending to arrange my things so I wouldn't have to stand up and figure out where to go next.
New school.
No map.
No people.
Great.
"Hey… you're Mira, right?"
I looked up.
Two girls stood in front of my desk.
One had her arms crossed loosely, her expression calm but observant. The other leaned forward slightly, like she was already interested in whatever I was going to say.
"Yeah," I replied. "That's me."
"I'm Tessa," the first one said, nodding toward the girl beside her. "And this is Lila."
Lila gave a small wave. "You're new-new, right? Not just transferred from another class?"
I almost smiled.
"Yeah. First day."
"Hmm," Tessa hummed, glancing at Lila. "That explains it."
I frowned slightly. "Explains what?"
"You handled that pretty well," Lila said.
"Handled what?"
"The hallway," she said. "Bumping into him and still walking away like nothing happened?"
Oh.
That.
"I didn't know it was a big deal," I admitted.
They exchanged a look.
Not judgmental.
Just… knowing.
Tessa let out a quiet breath. "Yeah, you're definitely new."
"Is it that serious?" I asked.
"It's not something you want to repeat," she said simply.
Not very helpful.
But enough to understand.
Lila softened it with a small smile.
"Don't worry. You'll figure things out."
That didn't sound reassuring either.
But somehow… their presence made things feel lighter.
Less tense.
Less lonely.
"Do you have your next class?" Lila asked.
I shook my head. "Still trying to figure that out."
"Perfect," she said quickly. "We'll show you."
Tessa rolled her eyes slightly. "Before you accidentally cause another scene."
I huffed a small laugh.
"Wow. First day and I already have a reputation."
"Not a bad one," Lila said. "Just… noticeable."
That word again.
Noticeable.
I wasn't sure how I felt about it.
But as we walked out together, their voices filling the space around me, it didn't feel as overwhelming as before.
For the first time since I got here…
I didn't feel completely alone.
