Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: The Locked Train

By the time they reached the front coach—

Something felt different.

Quieter.

Too quiet.

The husband slowed.

His instincts sharpened.

"This isn't right," he said.

The others stopped behind him.

The engine door stood ahead.

Closed.

Locked.

Through the small glass panel—

They saw him.

The driver.

He wasn't attacking.

He wasn't still either.

He was shaking.

His hands gripped the controls tightly.

His breathing uneven.

His body trembling—

As if fighting something from within.

"He's not fully turned…" the old man whispered.

Before anyone could respond—

A voice crackled through the train speakers.

Distorted.

Breaking.

"Don't… open… the door…"

Everyone froze.

The driver's voice continued.

Weak.

Strained.

"They react to movement… and sound…"

A pause.

Heavy breathing.

"…but light…"

Another pause.

"…light confuses them…"

The husband's eyes sharpened instantly.

A pattern.

This wasn't random.

This was something they could understand.

Control.

Maybe even use.

Behind him—

The group looked uncertain.

Afraid.

But for the first time—

He wasn't just reacting.

He was thinking ahead.

And in that moment—

He wasn't just surviving.

He was leading.
