Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: Between Life and Love

They moved again.

Slower this time.

Not because they wanted to—

But because every step now carried weight.

The corridor had narrowed.

Broken luggage blocked parts of the path.

Seats were half-torn.

The air felt heavier… thicker.

It carried a faint metallic smell—

Blood.

She noticed it now.

And for a second—

Her stomach turned.

Her grip on his hand tightened.

Not consciously.

Not deliberately.

But he felt it.

He didn't look at her.

Didn't say anything.

He just tightened his grip back.

A silent response.

A silent promise.

I'm here.

They moved through a tight gap between seats.

Too narrow for two people side by side.

She stepped first—

But the space forced her backward—

Until her back brushed lightly against his chest.

Both of them froze.

Just for a fraction of a second.

In any other moment—

She would have stepped away immediately.

Created distance.

Protected the invisible wall she had built between them for two years.

But not now.

Now—

She didn't move.

His arm instinctively came around her.

Not forcefully.

Not possessively.

Protectively.

Guiding her through the gap.

Shielding her from the sharp edges of broken metal.

Her breath caught.

Not from fear.

But from something unfamiliar.

Something she had spent years avoiding.

Safety.

And suddenly—

That terrified her more than everything around them.

Because she realized something she hadn't allowed herself to think before.

She had never truly felt this way with anyone else.

Not even him.

Not before.

Her thoughts raced.

Uncontrolled.

Unfiltered.

Why now?

Why here?

Why does it feel real only when I might lose it?

They cleared the narrow space.

His arm slowly moved away.

But the absence of it—

Was louder than the presence had been.

She turned slightly.

Looked at him.

He was focused ahead.

Alert.

Unshaken.

As if nothing had happened.

But something had.

Inside her.

A realization.

Quiet.

But undeniable.

"I love him…"

The thought came suddenly.

Without permission.

Without hesitation.

And once it came—

It didn't leave.
