"No…"
The word slipped from Amara's lips like something fragile, something broken beyond repair.
Her hands trembled violently as she stared at the image on her phone, her vision blurring as tears gathered in her eyes.
That moment.
That secret.
That life she had buried so deep, she had almost convinced herself it never happened.
It was supposed to stay hidden.
Forever.
"Amara?"
David's voice came from behind her again, closer this time, sharper, edged with confusion and growing suspicion.
She quickly locked her phone, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
Too late.
"I saw it," he said, his tone firmer now. "Who's baby was that?"
Silence.
The kind that suffocates.
The kind that presses against your chest until breathing feels like a struggle.
"Answer me," David demanded, stepping closer, his presence suddenly overwhelming.
Amara swallowed hard, her throat dry, her thoughts scattered.
This was the moment she had feared for years.
The moment where the truth would no longer stay hidden.
Slowly…
She turned to face him.
Tears filled her eyes as she looked at the man she loved.
The man she had chosen.
The man she had lied to.
"Before I met you…" she began, her voice trembling, each word heavy with guilt.
David's expression shifted immediately.
"I had a child."
The words fell between them like a bomb.
David blinked, as if his mind refused to process what he had just heard.
"You… what?" he asked, his voice low, almost disbelieving.
"I had a baby," she repeated, her voice breaking as tears slid down her cheeks.
The silence that followed felt endless.
"And you never thought to tell me?" he asked, his voice rising now, hurt and anger blending together.
"I wanted to," she whispered. "So many times. I tried… but every time I thought about it, I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?" he shot back.
"Afraid of losing you," she admitted.
David let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through his hair.
"So instead, you just lied? For years?"
Amara shook her head quickly.
"It wasn't like that. I thought I could leave it behind. I thought it was over."
"But it's not," David said sharply. "Clearly, it's not."
Amara's chest tightened as she realized he was right.
Nothing about this was over.
"And that's not even the worst part," she said quietly, her voice dropping.
David's expression hardened instantly.
"What do you mean?" he asked, his tone cautious now.
Amara hesitated.
Her heart pounded harder.
Because this was the truth that could destroy everything.
"The child…" she started, her lips trembling.
Another tear slipped down her cheek.
"…might be yours."
Everything stopped.
David froze completely, his eyes locking onto hers as if searching for any sign that she was joking.
"That's not possible," he said immediately, shaking his head. "We didn't even know each other back then."
Amara held his gaze, her expression steady despite the storm inside her.
"We did," she said softly.
Confusion flooded his face.
"What are you talking about?"
Amara took a shaky breath, her fingers tightening at her sides.
"You just don't remember," she said.
David frowned deeply, trying to make sense of her words.
"Stop speaking in riddles, Amara," he snapped. "Explain."
She hesitated again, then finally said—
"It was years ago… before everything. Before this life. Before you even knew my name."
David stared at her, his mind clearly racing now.
"And you're just telling me this now?" he asked, his voice quieter but more dangerous.
"I didn't know how," she admitted. "And then… time passed. We built something. I thought… maybe it didn't matter anymore."
David scoffed lightly.
"Didn't matter?" he repeated. "A whole child didn't matter?"
Amara flinched.
"I was wrong," she whispered.
Silence fell again.
Heavier this time.
And then—
Her phone buzzed.
Both of them froze instantly.
Slowly, reluctantly, Amara pulled it out again.
Another message.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
"He deserves to know everything, don't you think?"
Amara's breath caught.
Because deep down…
She knew.
This was only the beginning.
