Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Amara couldn't breathe.

"There is no second child," she said quickly.

Too quickly.

The words came out sharp, defensive, almost desperate.

David didn't respond immediately.

He just stared at her.

Really stared.

Not as her husband.

But as someone trying to figure out if the woman standing in front of him was telling the truth… or hiding something deeper.

"Then why," he said slowly, his voice calm but dangerously controlled, "does that message sound like there is one?"

Amara swallowed hard.

Her throat felt dry.

Tight.

"I don't know," she said, shaking her head, though even she could hear the uncertainty in her own voice.

But the truth was…

She wasn't entirely sure anymore.

Because whoever was behind those messages—

They hadn't been wrong so far.

Her grip tightened around her phone.

"No," she whispered, more to herself now. "That's not possible."

David stepped closer.

"Amara," he said quietly, "look at me."

She hesitated.

Then slowly lifted her eyes to meet his.

"If there's something else," he continued, "anything at all—you need to tell me now."

His tone wasn't angry this time.

It was serious.

Direct.

And somehow…

That made it worse.

"Because whatever this is," he added, glancing briefly at her phone, "it's not random."

Amara felt her chest tighten.

"I know," she admitted softly.

And that was the truth.

This wasn't coincidence.

This wasn't bad luck.

This was deliberate.

Her phone buzzed again.

Both of them looked down at the same time.

This time, Amara didn't hesitate.

She opened it immediately.

A new message appeared.

"You're asking the wrong questions."

Amara frowned.

Before she could respond—

Another message came in.

"Ask yourself what really happened that night."

Her heart skipped.

That night.

Lagos.

Her mind flashed back instantly.

The hotel room.

The confusion.

The way everything had felt… off.

David leaned in slightly.

"What does it say?" he asked.

She hesitated.

Then showed him.

His expression darkened as he read the messages.

"This person knows too much," he muttered.

Amara nodded slowly.

Another buzz.

Her heart pounded harder.

She opened the next message.

"Meet me tomorrow. 7PM. Toronto."

Attached was an address.

Amara stared at it.

Toronto.

David leaned closer.

"Let me see."

She handed him the phone.

His eyes scanned the message quickly.

"Who is this?" he demanded.

Amara shook her head slowly.

"I don't know…"

But something about it didn't feel random.

It felt…

Calculated.

Like every step had already been planned.

Then another message appeared.

"Bring your husband."

A pause.

Then—

"He deserves the truth."

David let out a short, humorless laugh.

"Of course he does."

"This isn't a joke," Amara said quietly.

"I know," he replied, his tone serious again.

Silence fell between them.

But this time…

It felt different.

Not like before.

Not like a couple falling apart.

But like two people standing on the edge of something dangerous.

Together.

"Toronto," David said finally.

Amara looked at him.

"We leave in the morning," he added.

She hesitated.

Every instinct in her body told her this was a bad idea.

That whoever was behind this…

Was leading them exactly where they wanted them.

"This could be a trap," she said quietly.

David nodded.

"I know."

"Then why go?"

He held her gaze.

"Because if we don't," he said, "they control the story."

Amara felt a chill run down her spine.

And deep down…

She knew he was right.

Because whoever this was…

They weren't just exposing secrets.

They were pulling the strings.

And now…

Amara and David were walking straight into their game.
