Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

EVADNE

2 months had gone by since I found out I was pregnant. It became my number one priority to protect my baby and make sure it came out of this alive. The last two months were not easy.

Esmeralda died a few days after I found out about my pregnancy.

She was the only person who knew about it and she took the secret to her grave. I was there when she breathed her last breath.

'It hurts so bad please make it stop, please., Esmeralda cried out in pain kicking her blankets and screaming her hands tightly

holding her head'

The doctor pushed me aside roughly and yelled at me not to stand in her way. I silently obeyed without a fuss because I was

too scared to get chased away, too scared to leave her all alone even though I had no idea what was going on.

Esmeralda's screams echoed through the busy room, doctors trying to help her but she kept pushing them away and hitting

anyone who came close to her.

Her screams were ear piercing making my ears throb but I couldn't even imagine what she was experiencing.

The always elegant Esmeralda looked like she was in so much pain. I watched as her body slowly stopped moving and her

screams slowly faded. Her eyes closed and she breathed her last breath.

Her beautiful face was soaked in tears. The machine displayed straight lines proving that she was no more. The doctors shook

their heads in disappointment.

'I'm sorry , she's no more.'

I looked at her, she didn't move, she just laid there unwilling to wake up. I knew this day would come but preparing for something was much easier than actually experiencing it.

We'd become really good friends in that one month and now she is gone.

I closed my eyes trying to erase the memory of that day. Every time I remembered it just left me with unanswered questions. I had thought that people with cancer at least died in their sleep but her death looked so unbearably painful.

I know Saint deserves to know about esmeralda. I know he deserved to know what happened to his lover but I couldn't dishonor her last wish. Even though she was gone it was a secret I had to keep.

Evelynne,"you don't look fine evadne, are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital."

Saint,"she says she's fine mom so let her be."

I forced a smile onto my face trying to ease the tension. Saint stayed true to his words and made sure each day of my life was miserable. After I came home late 3 days after Esmeralda's death I found Saint sitting a few steps away from the door, smoking and his chair was directly facing the door.

The rain poured down a cruel reminder that this was no happy occasion. Esmeralda's mother looked at me with so much

hatred but she loved her daughter so she couldn't really do anything about me. I assumed they didn't know she was ill all

along, before the funeral they had confronted me accusing me for Esmeralda's death.

Her mother had hit me, a few slaps across the face. Her parents left after her coffin was buried and left me alone in this cemetery. I hate the cemetery, they were scary and I read so many ghost stories.

'When were you planning on telling me the truth, Evadne?'Angelo's voice startled me. I turned back and there he was wearing a white half buttoned shirt and green trousers. What the hell is he doing here? No one else knows about today besides her family.

'What are you doing here?'

He was drenched, the rain making it a little hard to focus but the hurt in his eyes couldn't be concealed.

'Can you at least explain yourself. Do you have a reasonable excuse, do you have a valid reason for what you did?'

'What are you talking about?'

'What am I talking about/? You ghosted me out of nowhere Evadne then now you're married to Saint. Saint of all people Eva.

Why would you do that to me? I'm sorry Angelo, I didn't mean to hurt you,it was never my intention to hurt you.'

'Then why Evadne? Why did you hurt me/? The worst part was that I had to find out from a stranger. If I had not told you anything, you would have just carried on with your happy marriage. I can't believe you of all people did this to me.'

Angelo shook his head in disappointment then left me here in the rain with the ghosts of this cemetery. I didn't mean to hurt him. I had no choice. Esmeralda needed my help. I couldn't say no.
