Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15 — THE ONE WHO WAS REWRITTEN

"Target reacquired."

The voice wasn't Jaxon's.

It wore his tone.

But it had no weight.

No hesitation.

No humanity.

Mira's hand trembled on the gun.

"I can't…" she whispered.

Eryx stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

"You don't have to," he said again.

Ashar didn't interrupt.

Soren didn't move.

Because they both understood something Mira didn't yet:

This wasn't her fight.

Jaxon—no—

The replacement lifted its weapon.

Locked directly onto Eryx.

No warning.

No pause.

BANG.

Eryx moved just in time.

The shot grazed past his shoulder.

Burning.

Sharp.

He didn't even react to the pain.

His eyes stayed locked on Jaxon.

"…You're still in there," Eryx said quietly.

The replacement didn't respond.

It moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

Jaxon had always been skilled.

Precise.

This version?

Perfect.

Another shot.

Closer.

Eryx ducked.

Rolled.

Barely avoided it.

Mira shouted, "ERYX—!"

"Stay back!" he snapped.

Not harsh.

Not angry.

Certain.

⚔️ THE DIFFERENCE

Eryx stood again.

Breathing steady.

Watching.

Something clicked in his mind.

"This isn't a monster," he muttered.

Ashar nodded slightly.

"It's not meant to chase you," he said.

A pause.

"It's meant to end you."

The replacement rushed forward.

Closing distance instantly.

Eryx didn't run this time.

He stepped in.

The strike came fast—

Too fast.

But Eryx moved before it landed.

Not reacting.

Predicting.

The attack missed by inches.

Soren's eyes narrowed.

"…He's reading it."

Ashar corrected quietly.

"No."

A pause.

"He remembers it."

🧠 MEMORY IN MOTION

Another strike.

Another dodge.

Eryx moved like he'd done this before.

Because he had.

Fragments of past versions flooded in—

Fighting Jaxon.

Losing.

Dying.

Failing.

But not this time.

This time—

He was ahead.

The replacement hesitated.

Just slightly.

That was new.

Eryx saw it.

And moved.

A direct hit—

Not lethal.

Not even strong.

But intentional.

He struck Jaxon's arm.

The weapon shifted slightly off-angle.

Mira gasped.

"He's… holding back?"

Ashar shook his head.

"He's choosing."

💀 THE TRUTH OF REPLACEMENT

The system voice flickered back.

Distorted.

Unstable.

"Correction unit… destabilizing…"

The replacement froze for half a second.

Then—

Adjusted.

Its movements became sharper.

More aggressive.

Jaxon's voice returned.

Just slightly.

"Eryx…"

Mira froze.

"That—did you hear that?!"

Eryx didn't stop moving.

"I know you can hear me," he said.

The replacement lunged again.

This time—

Eryx didn't dodge.

He caught it.

Barely.

Hands locked.

Strength against strength.

"…You chose this," Eryx said.

A flash.

A memory.

Jaxon's voice—

From before.

"The system only reveals the truth… under pressure."

Eryx's grip tightened.

"…So I'm finishing what you started."

⚡ BREAKING THE REWRITE

The replacement pushed harder.

Trying to overpower him.

Eryx didn't resist.

He stepped closer.

Not fighting.

Reaching.

And then—

He grabbed Jaxon's collar.

Pulled him closer.

"…You're not a tool," Eryx said quietly.

The replacement's movements stuttered.

The system voice glitched violently.

"Identity conflict…"

"Correction failing…"

Mira whispered, "What is he doing…?"

Ashar answered softly.

"He's not fighting the system."

A pause.

"He's rejecting it."

💥 THE DECISION

Eryx stepped back slightly.

Still holding Jaxon.

The replacement tried to move.

To attack.

But something was wrong.

It hesitated.

Jaxon's eyes—

Flickered.

Just for a second.

"…Finish it," a faint voice said.

Mira gasped.

Eryx froze.

"…Jaxon?"

A pause.

"…Don't let them use me."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Mira shook her head. "No… no, there has to be another way—"

Ashar didn't speak.

Because he knew.

There wasn't.

Eryx closed his eyes for half a second.

Then opened them.

Steady.

"…I understand."

The replacement moved again.

Trying to regain control.

Too late.

Eryx moved faster.

Not hesitation.

Not anger.

Clarity.

One clean strike.

Precise.

Final.

The replacement froze.

Jaxon's eyes cleared.

Just for a moment.

"…This time… you made the right choice," he whispered.

And then—

He was gone.

Not rewritten.

Not removed.

Gone.

⚠️ AFTERMATH

Silence returned.

Mira dropped to her knees.

"…No…"

Eryx stood still.

Breathing heavy now.

Ashar stepped closer.

"You changed it again," he said.

Soren watched carefully.

"…That wasn't a system outcome."

Eryx didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

He hadn't followed the rules.

He hadn't broken them either.

He had chosen something outside them.

And the system—

For the first time—

Didn't know how to react.

The wall behind them flickered again.

The status updated.

STATUS: UNDEFINED

Ashar looked at it.

Longer than before.

"…You're getting closer," he said quietly.

Mira looked up slowly.

Tears still in her eyes.

"…Closer to what?"

Ashar's answer was simple.

"The end that doesn't reset."

Eryx finally spoke again.

"…Then that's where I'm going."
