Chapter 119 - CHAPTER 118: OUT OF CONTROL

🖤

It didn't come from them not this time. They were careful and measured. Holding the line exactly where it needed to be. For once, everything was working until it wasn't.

The email came mid-morning marked urgent sent to multiple departments.

Cassy saw it first. Her screen lighting up with the subject line.

Internal Review Notice — Immediate Action Required

Her stomach tightened instantly because that wasn't routine. She opened it, read once then again. Her fingers stilled on the keyboard. "…No."

Across the office, Caleb's phone buzzed, same notification, same subject, he read it. His expression didn't change but his posture did slightly. That subtle shift said everything.

Within minutes the tension spread, whispers, glances, quiet conversations behind screens because this wasn't small, this was a full internal audit triggered by concerns regarding executive decision alignment and risk management consistency.

Cassy closed her eyes briefly because she knew exactly what that meant not proof, not evidence. Concern and perception. The same thing they had been managing now formalized and escalated.

A knock hit her door sharply and immediate.

"Come in."

It opened, Caleb stepped inside no hesitation, no distance this time. "…You saw it." Not a question.

Cassy nodded. "Yes."

Silence because they both understood this changed everything.

"They're not just watching anymore," she said.

Caleb's jaw tightened slightly. "They're investigating." A pause. "And not quietly."

That was the problem this wasn't contained, this was visible, documented and official.

Cassy stood moving around the desk. "…This doesn't make sense," she said. A pause. "We fixed it."

Caleb shook his head slightly. "We adjusted it." Another pause. "But they're not looking at now." A beat. "They're looking at everything."

That hit because that meant past decisions, past interactions, past moments. Everything was about to be reviewed.

"…Including before the terms," she said.

Caleb nodded. "Yes."

Silence, heavy and immediate because that was where the risk was not what they were doing now but what they had already done and how it could be interpreted.

"…This is because of the meetings," Cassy said quietly. "The disagreements."

Caleb exhaled. "Or the lack of them." A pause. "Or both."

Because that was the problem, too aligned, suspicious, too distant also suspicious.

Now, they were being reviewed for all of it.

"…We're going to be questioned," Cassy said.

Caleb nodded. "Individually." Another pause. "Formally."

There it was the next step.

Cassy's chest tightened because this wasn't just pressure anymore this was scrutiny with consequences.

"…We need to be careful," she said.

Caleb looked at her. "We already are." A beat. "But now it's not just about control." Another pause. "It's about consistency."

That meant every answer, every explanation, every detail it all had to align without looking coordinated, without contradicting each other, without giving them a reason to push further.

"…This is exactly what they were waiting for," Cassy said.

Caleb didn't disagree because it was. One shift, one inconsistency and now they had a reason. A formal one.

Cassy exhaled slowly. "…We can handle it."

Caleb held her gaze. "…We have to."

Silence settled again but this time wasn't just tension it was uncertainty because this wasn't something they could control the same way. This wasn't about how they acted moving forward. This was about how everything would be judged and whether what they built, what they protected would survive that judgment.

Because now the balance they fought for wasn't enough not under this kind of scrutiny and for the first time since they started holding the line felt like control was slipping.
