Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 38: THE CHOICE SHE MAKES

🖤

The word stayed between them, stay. Simple, quiet but heavier than anything he had said before.

Cassy didn't answer immediately, she couldn't because this wasn't just about him anymore or her. It was about everything that could happen if she said yes.

The wind brushed against her gently, the city moved below like nothing had changed but up here everything had.

"…You make it sound easy," she said softly.

Caleb didn't respond right away. "Isn't it?" he asked.

Cassy let out a quiet breath. "No." A pause. "It's the opposite."

Silence.

Caleb stepped a little closer not enough to overwhelm, just enough to be present. "Why?" he asked.

Cassy looked at him, really looked this time not as her boss, not as someone distant but as him. "Because if I stay," she said quietly, "then I can't pretend anymore."

That answer landed deeper than anything else because it wasn't fear it wasn't doubt. It was truth.

Caleb didn't look away. "Then don't," he said. Simple and immediate.

Cassy shook her head slightly. "It's not that simple." A pause then she added softly, "You don't just affect me at work anymore."

Silence. That was new, that was honest and that was real.

Caleb's voice lowered. "…I know." And he did, that was the problem.

Cassy stepped back just one step but it was enough. "I need to be sure," she said.

Caleb's gaze sharpened slightly. "About what?"

Cassy hesitated then answered, "About you."

Silence. That wasn't an easy thing to hear not for someone like him.

"What about me?" he asked.

Cassy looked at him carefully. "Whether you'll stay too."

That changed everything because now it wasn't just about her choice but it was about his.

Caleb didn't respond immediately not because he didn't want to but because for the first time he had to think about something beyond control.

"I don't walk away," he said finally.

Cassy smiled faintly. "…You already did once."

Veronica. That name didn't need to be said.

Caleb's jaw tightened. "That was different."

"Was it?" she asked softly.

Silence. Because now, that past mattered not as history but as proof.

Cassy took another small step back. "I'm not asking for promises," she said gently. "But I'm not ignoring reality either."

Caleb watched her not angry, not defensive but just… aware and that was new. "So what are you saying?" he asked quietly.

Cassy took a breath, then says, "I'm saying I'll stay." The words hit immediate and unexpected but before he could react, she continued. "…But not like this."

Silence.

Caleb frowned slightly. "…Explain."

Cassy met his gaze, calm and clear. "I'll stay," she repeated softly. "But I won't let this… blur everything." A pause. "I won't lose myself trying to understand you."

That line stayed, heavy and important. Caleb didn't interrupt and didn't argue because he understood what she meant.

"And if you want me to stay," she added, "then you have to meet me halfway." That was it not a rejection, not surrender but a condition.

Caleb stepped closer again, this time, more certain. "And what does that look like?" he asked.

Cassy's voice softened. "…Honesty." A pause. "Consistency." "No running when things get complicated."

Silence. That wasn't easy, that wasn't simple and that was everything he had avoided his entire life.

Caleb looked at her for a long moment then nodded once. "…Alright." No hesitation, no overthinking, just agreement.

Cassy blinked slightly. "…That's it?"

A faint shift in his expression, almost a smirk. "I told you," he said quietly. "I don't take back what's true."

Silence.

And for the first time, this didn't feel like something fragile but it felt like something beginning. Not perfect, not clear but real.

And for now that was enough.
