Veronica didn't like losing, not quietly, not slowly, not at all and right now she could feel it slipping. not just Caleb but control. So she did what she always did when things slipped away, she forced them back.
"Mr. Garcia," Adrian said carefully, stepping into the office, "you have a scheduled meeting at eleven."
Caleb didn't look up. "Reschedule."
Adrian hesitated. "…It's not that kind of meeting."
That made him pause. "…What does that mean?"
Adrian placed a folder on the desk. "Legal."
Silence.
Cassy, standing just outside, felt it immediately. That shift again, that tension that meant something bigger was coming.
Caleb opened the folder and for the second time his expression changed. "What is this?" he asked quietly.
Adrian exhaled slowly. "…It's from Veronica."
Cassy stepped closer, not inside, just enough to hear.
"Go on," Caleb said.
Adrian nodded. "…She's filing a claim."
Silence.
"What kind of claim?" Caleb asked.
Adrian didn't hesitate. "…Breach of agreement."
Everything stopped, Cassy's breath caught. "What agreement?" she asked softly.
Caleb didn't answer because he already knew.
Veronica, the engagement, the contract behind it.
"She's claiming damages," Adrian continued. "Financial. Reputational."
Silence, heavy, unavoidable.
Cassy looked at Caleb waiting again. "…Is that real?" she asked.
Caleb didn't lie. "Yes." That one word hit harder than the first truth.
Cassy's chest tightened. "…So walking away wasn't just emotional." A pause. Then, "It was a risk."
Caleb didn't deny it. "Yes."
Silence, because now this wasn't just about feelings, it was about consequences, real ones.
"She wants to force a settlement," Adrian added.
Caleb closed the file slowly. "She won't get one." His voice was calm but underneath, steel.
Cassy stepped inside now fully. "…And if she doesn't back down?" she asked.
Caleb looked at her. "She will." That confidence didn't feel the same this time because this wasn't something he could just control.
And Cassy knew it. "This is because of me," she said quietly.
Immediate. "No," Caleb said.
But she shook her head. "It is."
Silence. Because part of it was true.
"She came back because something changed," Cassy continued. "And that something is me."
Caleb stepped closer. "That's not your responsibility."
Cassy met his gaze. "…But it's affecting you."
Silence. And that mattered to her more than she expected.
Adrian cleared his throat softly. "I'll handle the legal side for now."
Caleb nodded once. "Do that."
Adrian left leaving them alone again but this silence was heavier because now the stakes weren't just emotional, they were real.
Cassy looked at the file then back at him. "…You're willing to deal with all of this?" she asked.
Caleb didn't hesitate. "Yes." No explanation, no justification, just yes.
Cassy's heart tightened slightly. "…Why?" That question wasn't light anymore.
Caleb stepped closer. "Because I already made the decision," he said quietly. A pause. Then, "I don't go back."
Silence.
And for the first time, that line felt heavier than before because now it had consequences, real ones.
Cassy looked at him for a long moment. Then whispered, "…Neither do I."
That changed everything because now they weren't standing on uncertain ground anymore, they were standing on a choice, a real one and whatever came next, they would have to face it.
Together.
Or not at all.
