Chapter 7 - That Was Definitely Not Normal

The pressure didn't go away.

If anything, it got worse.

At first, it had just been a strange weight in the air, something you could almost ignore if you tried hard enough. Now it felt like the entire space around me was tightening, like something invisible was pressing down on everything at once.

"…Okay," I said slowly, glancing around. "I'm starting to think we should all panic a little."

No one laughed.

Again.

Tough crowd.

The villagers had backed off further now, forming a loose circle around us. No one was stepping forward anymore. No one was even trying. They just stood there, watching, their expressions tense and uncertain.

The elder was the only one who hadn't moved.

"…Ren," she said sharply, "you need to focus."

"I am focused," I replied. "I'm focused on the fact that something is very wrong."

"Then focus harder."

"…That's not helpful."

Before she could respond, I felt it again—that surge of warmth, but this time it wasn't just spreading through me. It was pushing outward, leaking into the space around me like something I couldn't contain.

And the moment it touched the others—

They reacted.

Not all at once.

But enough.

One of the villagers staggered slightly, grabbing onto the person next to her. Another let out a quiet gasp, her hand pressing against her chest like she was trying to steady her breathing.

"…Why does it feel like this?" someone whispered.

"I can't… think properly…"

"…What is he doing?"

"I'm not doing anything!" I said immediately.

"You are," the elder replied. "Even if you don't understand how."

"…That's even worse!"

Mira didn't move.

She was still right next to me, her hand gripping my sleeve tightly, like she was holding onto something important.

No—like she was holding onto *me*.

"…Mira," I said quietly, glancing at her. "You're okay, right?"

She didn't answer right away.

Her head tilted slightly, just enough for her eyes to meet mine again.

And for a second—

I felt something shift.

Not around me.

But in her.

"…You're staying," she said softly.

"I never said I was leaving."

"Good."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

And her grip tightened.

Not painfully.

But firmly.

Like it wasn't a question anymore.

"…Okay," I muttered. "That tone is getting a little concerning."

The elder took a step forward.

"Mira," she said, her voice firm now, "you need to release him."

"No."

Immediate.

No hesitation.

"You are being affected the most right now," the elder continued. "If this continues, your emotional state will destabilize."

"I don't care," Mira replied.

"…You really should."

Still ignored.

I was noticing a pattern here.

The pressure surged again.

Stronger this time.

The air around us warped slightly, just enough to make the edges of things feel… off.

And then—

Something snapped.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't visible.

But it was very real.

One of the villagers suddenly stepped forward.

Not cautiously.

Not hesitantly.

Directly.

Her movements were faster than before, her eyes locked onto me with a kind of intensity that made my chest tighten.

"…I need to—"

She didn't finish.

Because Mira moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

One moment she was beside me.

The next, she was in front of the other girl.

Her hand shot out.

And grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

The girl froze instantly, her expression shifting from determination to shock.

"…Don't," Mira said.

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it carried something with it.

Something that made everyone go completely still.

"…Mira," the elder said sharply, "let go."

Mira didn't move.

Her grip tightened slightly.

"…Don't touch him," she repeated.

The girl tried to pull her hand back.

She couldn't.

"…Hey—wait—" I started, stepping forward slightly. "Let's not escalate this—"

Mira didn't even look at me.

Her focus was completely locked on the girl in front of her.

And that was when I realized something.

This wasn't just tension anymore.

This was control.

"…Mira," I said more carefully this time. "You're kind of… holding her a bit too tight."

No response.

Her grip tightened again.

The girl winced slightly.

"…That actually looks like it hurts," I added.

Still nothing.

The elder stepped forward again, her expression serious.

"Mira, release her. Now."

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

[Ding.]

The sound cut through everything.

Sharp.

Clear.

And this time, it wasn't just one message.

**[Critical Threshold Reached]**

**Target: Mira**

**Emotional State: Devotion → Obsession (Early Stage)**

**[Warning]**

**Subject losing rational restraint**

"…That's really not good," I said quietly.

Because I could feel it.

The change.

It wasn't just in her actions.

It was in the air.

In the way she stood.

In the way she looked at me.

Then, slowly—

She released the girl.

Not suddenly.

Not roughly.

Just… slowly.

Like she didn't want to.

The girl immediately pulled her hand back, stepping away quickly, her expression shaken.

"…What was that?" she whispered.

No one answered.

Because everyone was looking at Mira now.

And for the first time…

They looked afraid.

"…Mira," the elder said carefully, "look at me."

She didn't.

Her eyes moved.

Slowly.

Back to me.

"…You're not leaving," she said again.

It wasn't a question.

It wasn't even a request.

It was a statement.

"…Yeah," I said, trying to keep things calm. "I'm still here."

"Good."

That word again.

Soft.

But heavy.

The pressure in the air didn't go away.

If anything, it felt like it had settled into something more stable.

More controlled.

Which was somehow worse.

Because now it wasn't chaotic.

It was focused.

And it was centered on me.

"…Okay," I said under my breath. "I officially don't like this anymore."

The elder exhaled slowly, clearly trying to regain control of the situation.

"…Everyone, step back," she ordered.

This time, they listened.

No hesitation.

No argument.

They moved back, creating more space between us.

But they didn't leave.

Not a single one.

They were still watching.

Still feeling whatever this was.

"…Ren," the elder said, her voice quieter now, "you need to understand something."

"…I feel like I'm not going to like this."

"You are not just affecting emotions," she said. "You are amplifying them."

"…Yeah, I figured that part out."

"And if this continues," she added, "it will only get worse."

I glanced at Mira.

She was still holding onto my sleeve.

Still standing close.

Still looking at me like nothing else mattered.

"…Yeah," I said quietly. "I'm starting to see that."

And somewhere, far above—

Or far beyond—

I felt it again.

That presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…This is definitely your fault," I muttered under my breath.

Because somehow…

I knew.

She was involved in this.

And something told me…

She wasn't going to stop it.
