The moment the elder said, *"He is something more,"* the entire atmosphere in the village changed.
It wasn't loud or dramatic. No one screamed or rushed forward. Instead, it was quieter than that—worse than that. The kind of quiet where everyone is thinking the same thing but no one wants to say it out loud.
And all of those thoughts were pointed directly at me.
"…Okay," I said slowly, rubbing the back of my neck. "I'm going to be honest, I don't like how that sounded."
No one responded.
They were too busy staring.
Again.
I was starting to get really tired of being stared at like this.
Mira's grip tightened around my sleeve, and when I glanced at her, I noticed she had moved even closer without me realizing it. Our shoulders were almost touching now, and her entire focus was locked onto the elder.
"He's mine," she said again.
Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried through the silence clearly.
The elder didn't react immediately. She simply watched Mira for a moment, her expression calm but serious.
"Mira," she said carefully, "this is not something you can decide alone."
"I already did," Mira replied.
"…Yeah, that's not how decisions work," I muttered.
Still ignored.
The elder sighed quietly, then looked back at me.
"…Ren," she said, "you need to understand something."
"That this situation is getting worse by the second?" I offered.
"That as well," she replied without missing a beat. "But more importantly… your existence is affecting everyone here."
I blinked. "…Excuse me?"
"You felt it, didn't you?" she continued. "When I touched you."
I hesitated.
"…Yeah. That weird… warmth thing?"
"That is not normal," she said. "Not even close."
"…That's reassuring."
"It shouldn't be."
Right.
Of course not.
Before I could ask anything else, the pressure in the air shifted again.
This time, it was stronger.
Much stronger.
It wasn't just a feeling anymore—it was something physical. The air felt heavier, like it was pressing down on me from all sides.
"…Okay," I said, glancing around. "Now I definitely don't like this."
The villagers reacted almost immediately.
Some of them stepped back instinctively. Others looked around in confusion, like they could feel something but didn't understand what it was.
"…Do you feel that?" one of them whispered.
"It's getting stronger…"
"…What is this?"
I swallowed.
"Yeah, I think I'm the problem," I said quietly.
Mira shook her head immediately. "No."
"…I appreciate the support, but—"
"No," she repeated, her voice firm.
Then she stepped even closer, her hand tightening around my sleeve again.
And that was when it happened.
The pressure spiked.
Not gradually.
All at once.
Like something inside me had just flipped a switch.
[Ding.]
The sound hit harder this time, sharp and almost overwhelming.
Multiple messages flooded my mind at once.
**[System Alert]**
**Emotional Energy Overload Detected**
**[Devotion Levels Rising Rapidly]**
**Multiple Targets Approaching Threshold**
**[Warning]**
**Instability Risk: HIGH**
"…Oh, that's bad," I said.
Because I could feel it.
Something inside me was reacting.
Not just responding—reacting.
The warmth from before surged again, but this time it wasn't contained. It spread outward, like waves moving through the air, brushing against everything around me.
The villagers froze.
Completely.
Their expressions changed instantly.
Confusion turned into something else.
Something deeper.
"…Ren," the elder said sharply, "you need to calm down."
"I'm not doing anything!" I replied.
"Your presence is enough."
"…That doesn't make sense!"
"It doesn't have to," she said. "It's happening anyway."
That was not helpful.
At all.
One of the younger villagers suddenly took a step forward, her eyes locked onto me in a way that made my stomach tighten.
"…He's…" she whispered.
Another one followed.
"…I can feel it…"
"…Why do I feel like this?"
The warmth grew stronger.
The pressure increased.
And then—
It shifted.
Not toward me.
But toward Mira.
I felt it immediately.
So did she.
Her grip tightened, and for a split second, her body tensed.
"…Mira?" I said.
She didn't respond.
Her breathing had changed.
Slower.
Heavier.
And when she looked at me—
Her eyes were different.
Not just focused.
Not just intense.
But deeper.
Like something had crossed a line.
"…You're not going anywhere," she said quietly.
"…I wasn't planning to?"
"Good."
That tone again.
Calm.
But heavy.
Possessive.
The villagers stepped back further this time, clearly unsettled by the shift.
"…This is escalating too fast," the elder said under her breath.
"No kidding," I replied.
Then it happened.
A sudden burst of pressure exploded outward.
Not visible.
But very real.
Several villagers stumbled back, their balance thrown off as the air around us seemed to distort for just a moment.
"…What was that?!" someone shouted.
"I didn't do that!" I said immediately.
The elder stepped forward, her expression sharp.
"This is what I was afraid of," she said. "He's amplifying everything."
"…That's not something I can control!"
"I know," she replied. "That's the problem."
Great.
Fantastic.
Love that for me.
Mira didn't move.
She was still standing right next to me, her hand locked onto my sleeve like it was the only thing grounding her.
"…Mira," the elder said carefully. "You need to let go."
"No."
That was immediate.
And absolute.
"If you stay connected to him right now, your emotional state will continue to escalate," the elder warned.
"I don't care," Mira replied.
"…That's not how that works."
She ignored me.
Again.
The pressure built once more.
Stronger.
More unstable.
And for a moment—
Just a moment—
I felt something else.
Something familiar.
Faint.
Distant.
But unmistakable.
Watching.
My eyes flicked upward instinctively.
There was nothing there.
Just the same perfect sky.
But I knew.
She was watching.
"…Yeah," I muttered under my breath. "Of course you are."
Because of course she was.
This whole situation had her written all over it.
And somehow…
I had a feeling she was enjoying it.
