Chapter 19 - Mother Knows

Lina was still screaming when she hit the ground.

Hard.

The air was knocked out of her lungs as darkness swallowed her whole.

For a moment—

She felt nothing.

No pain.

No sound.

No fear.

Just… emptiness.

Then—

Drip.

Her eyes snapped open.

Cold.

Wet.

Something was beneath her.

Not floor.

Not ground.

Something soft.

Breathing.

Lina pushed herself up slowly, her hands trembling as they sank slightly into the surface.

Her heart began to race.

"No… not again…"

She looked around.

And froze.

This place—

It wasn't like the others.

No pulsing walls.

No screaming faces.

No shifting darkness.

This place was…

Quiet.

Too quiet.

The air was still.

Heavy.

Like something was waiting.

Watching.

Her breathing echoed softly as she stood.

"Ethan…?" she called weakly.

No response.

Her chest tightened.

Tears burned her eyes.

"I'm sorry…" she whispered. "I'm so sorry…"

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Familiar.

"…Lina?"

Her heart stopped.

No.

That voice—

It couldn't be.

Slowly—

She turned.

And there—

Standing a few steps away—

Was her mother.

Exactly as she remembered.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same gentle expression.

Like nothing had changed.

Like nothing had happened.

"Mom…?" Lina's voice broke.

Her knees nearly gave out.

It didn't make sense.

It couldn't make sense.

But she didn't care.

Not anymore.

She ran forward—

And wrapped her arms around her.

"I thought I lost you…" she sobbed.

For a moment—

Her mother didn't move.

Didn't respond.

Then—

Slowly—

She hugged her back.

"It's okay…" her mother whispered softly. "You're safe now."

Lina froze.

Safe?

That word didn't belong here.

Her grip tightened slightly.

"…safe?" she repeated.

Her mother pulled back gently, holding her shoulders.

"Yes," she said calmly. "You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Lina stared at her.

Something felt wrong.

Not obvious.

Not clear.

Just—

Off.

Her mother's smile lingered a little too long.

Her eyes didn't blink enough.

And her hands—

They were warm.

Too warm.

Like the door.

Like the walls.

Like the house.

Lina slowly stepped back.

"…how are you here?" she asked quietly.

Her mother tilted her head slightly.

"I've always been here."

Lina's heart skipped.

"What…?"

"I waited for you," she continued.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I knew you would come back."

A chill ran down Lina's spine.

"No… that's not true…" she whispered.

Her mother's smile didn't fade.

"It is."

The air shifted.

Slightly.

Like the space itself reacted to her words.

Lina shook her head, stepping back further.

"You disappeared…" she said. "You left me—"

"I didn't leave you."

Her mother's voice sharpened slightly.

"I protected you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Confusing.

"What are you talking about…?" Lina asked.

Her mother took a step forward.

The ground beneath her feet didn't move.

Didn't pulse.

Didn't react.

Like she belonged here.

"You were never supposed to come back," she said softly.

Lina's chest tightened.

"…why?"

Her mother's expression changed.

Just slightly.

The softness faded.

Something else replaced it.

Something colder.

"Because it remembers you."

Lina's breath caught.

"It… remembers me?"

Her mother nodded slowly.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"And it remembers me too."

The silence that followed felt endless.

Lina's heart pounded louder.

Faster.

"No…" she whispered. "You're lying…"

Her mother sighed softly.

Almost… disappointed.

"I tried to keep you away," she said. "I really did."

The ground beneath Lina's feet twitched.

Just once.

Like a heartbeat.

"But you came back anyway."

Lina's mind raced.

Nothing made sense.

Nothing connected.

"You're not making sense!" she cried. "What is this place?! What is that thing?!"

Her mother's smile returned.

Slow.

Knowing.

"This place…" she said, looking around.

"…is not the house."

Lina froze.

"What…?"

"It's what's inside it."

Her stomach dropped.

"No… no, that's not possible…"

Her mother looked back at her.

Eyes sharp now.

Clear.

"It was never about the house, Lina."

A pause.

Then—

"It was about what we brought into it."

The words hit like a hammer.

"We…?" Lina whispered.

Her mother stepped closer.

Too close.

"And now it's awake."

The ground suddenly pulsed violently.

THUMP.

Lina flinched.

"That's the heart…" she whispered.

Her mother shook her head slowly.

"No."

Another pulse.

Stronger.

Closer.

THUMP.

Lina's breath became uneven.

"Then what is it…?"

Her mother leaned in slightly.

And whispered—

"It's breathing."

Everything stopped.

Lina's blood ran cold.

"No…"

Then—

A sound.

Behind her.

Soft.

Weak.

"…Lina…"

Her eyes widened.

Ethan.

She turned instantly.

And there—

Lying on the ground—

Bleeding.

Barely alive—

Was Ethan.

Her heart shattered.

"Ethan!" she cried, rushing toward him.

But before she could reach him—

A hand grabbed her wrist.

Tight.

Unmoving.

She froze.

Slowly—

She looked back.

Her mother.

Still holding her.

Still smiling.

"Don't," she said calmly.

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

"He's dying!"

Her mother's grip tightened.

"He's already dead."

Silence.

Lina shook her head violently.

"No! He's right there—he's talking—"

"He's not talking to you."

The words were quiet.

But they cut deep.

Lina's breath hitched.

"What…?"

Her mother's eyes darkened.

"He's talking to it."

The ground trembled again.

This time—

Something answered.

Not from the walls.

Not from the heart.

From Ethan.

His body jerked suddenly.

Violently.

His head snapped upward—

Too fast.

Too unnatural.

His eyes—

Completely black.

Lina froze.

"No…"

Ethan smiled.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like it hurt to do so.

"Lina…" he whispered.

But it wasn't him.

Not anymore.

Her mother finally let go of her wrist.

Stepping back.

Watching.

Waiting.

"Now you see," she said softly.

Lina's heart pounded wildly.

"You knew…" she whispered.

Her mother didn't deny it.

"I tried to delay it."

"Delay what?!"

Her mother's smile widened slightly.

"The inevitable."

Ethan's body began to rise slowly.

Bones cracking.

Blood dripping.

His movements unnatural.

Controlled.

And behind him—

The darkness began to gather.

Forming.

Shifting.

Becoming.

Lina's breathing broke.

"What is happening…?"

Her mother looked at her one last time.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Just…

Certain.

"It's choosing again."

Lina's chest tightened.

"No…"

Ethan took a step forward.

Then another.

Each step heavier.

More wrong.

The darkness behind him twisted into something massive.

Something endless.

Something alive.

And then—

It spoke.

Not through him.

Not around them.

But everywhere at once.

"You cannot stop me."

Lina stumbled back.

Her mind breaking.

Her heart racing.

Her world collapsing.

Her mother's voice came one last time—

Soft.

Almost gentle.

"Run."

Lina didn't hesitate.

She turned—

And ran into the darkness.

Behind her—

Ethan screamed.

Not in pain.

But in something worse.

Something that echoed endlessly.

Something that didn't sound human anymore.

And as Lina ran—

She realized something.

Something that made her blood run colder than anything before.

Her mother hadn't followed her.

She hadn't tried to help.

She hadn't even moved.

Lina slowed.

Just slightly.

Fear creeping in.

Then—

Very slowly—

She turned her head.

And what she saw—

Made her stop completely.

Her mother was gone.

In her place—

The wall.

Pulsing.

Breathing.

Smiling.
