Chapter 25 - The Voice That Wasn’t Hers

Darkness swallowed Ethan whole.

Not the kind you see through.

Not the kind your eyes adjust to.

This darkness had weight.

It pressed against his skin… slid into his lungs… wrapped around his thoughts like something alive.

Behind him—

Click.

The door closed.

Ethan spun around instantly.

"Lina?!"

Nothing.

No door.

No hallway.

Just endless black.

His breathing quickened. "No… no, I just came through—there was a door—I saw it—"

A soft sound cut through the silence.

"…Ethan…"

He froze.

That voice.

Her voice.

"I'm here," he said quickly, turning toward it. "Lina, where are you?!"

A pause.

Then—

Closer this time.

"…you came…"

Relief hit him so fast it almost hurt.

"Yes! I'm here—I told you I wouldn't leave you—just keep talking, I'll find you!"

Something shifted in the darkness.

Not a sound.

A presence.

Watching.

Ethan swallowed hard but kept moving forward, one slow step at a time.

"Lina?"

"…come closer…"

He stopped.

Something about it—

Just slightly wrong.

Not the voice.

The tone.

Too calm.

Too… patient.

"Lina," he said carefully, "say something only I would know."

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

"…you promised you wouldn't leave me…"

Ethan's heart skipped.

That was her.

But—

No.

No, something wasn't right.

"I did," he said slowly. "So tell me… what happened in the basement?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Too long.

Then—

"…it was dark…"

Ethan's chest tightened.

"That's not an answer."

The darkness around him shifted again.

Closer now.

Tighter.

"…why are you making this hard…?" the voice whispered.

And this time—

It didn't sound like Lina anymore.

Ethan stepped back.

"Show yourself."

Silence.

Then—

A shape began to form.

Not fully.

Just enough to see—

A figure.

Standing a few steps ahead.

Head tilted.

Still.

Watching him.

"Lina?" he whispered.

The figure took a step forward.

And another.

Light—faint, unnatural—began to leak into the space, just enough to reveal—

Her face.

Lina.

Exactly as he remembered.

Untouched.

Unchanged.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Ethan didn't move.

"Say my name," he said.

The figure smiled.

"…Ethan."

Cold spread through him.

Lina never smiled like that.

Too wide.

Too still.

"Where did you go?" he asked.

"I was waiting," she said.

"For me?"

"For you."

Her voice layered strangely—

Like two voices speaking at once.

One soft.

One… deeper.

Something inside Ethan screamed.

Run.

But his feet didn't move.

"Come here," she said gently, holding out her hand.

He stared at it.

Her hand.

Normal.

Human.

But something beneath the skin—

Shifted.

Like something trying to get out.

"Lina," he said, his voice low, "what are you?"

The smile widened.

Just a little too far.

"Don't you recognize me?"

The darkness behind her began to ripple.

And then—

More shapes appeared.

Dozens.

Standing.

Watching.

Each one—

A person.

Frozen.

Silent.

Their faces slowly turned toward Ethan.

And one by one—

They smiled the same way.

"…we've been waiting…" they whispered.

Ethan stumbled back, panic rising.

"No… no, no—"

"You opened the door," the Lina-thing said softly. "You let us hear you."

His breath hitched.

"I closed it," he said. "I stopped it!"

The figure tilted her head.

"Did you?"

Behind him—

A sound.

Ethan turned sharply.

Another door.

In the darkness.

Standing behind him now.

It hadn't been there before.

It was slightly open.

Inside it—

Movement.

Scratching.

Pushing.

Something trying to come through.

Ethan backed away from it slowly.

"No… I closed it… I closed it…"

"You closed one," the Lina-thing said.

Her voice dropped.

Deeper.

Hungrier.

"But you walked into another."

The door behind him creaked wider.

A hand pushed through.

Then another.

Dozens.

Clawing.

For him.

Ethan turned back—

But the figures had moved closer.

Too close.

Encircling him now.

Their smiles stretching wider.

Breaking their faces.

"Stay with us," they whispered.

"You don't have to choose anymore…"

The Lina-thing stepped forward, inches away now.

Up close—

He saw it.

Her eyes.

They weren't eyes.

They were doors.

Tiny.

Endless.

Opening inward.

"Where is she?" Ethan demanded, voice shaking. "Where is the real Lina?!"

For a moment—

Just a moment—

The smile twitched.

And something behind it—

Something trapped—

Screamed.

"…Ethan… don't—"

The voice cut off violently.

The thing's head snapped sideways.

Then slowly straightened.

Smile returning.

Wider than before.

"She's here," it said softly.

It leaned closer.

"So close he could feel its breath.

"Everywhere."

The hands from the door behind him grabbed his shirt.

Ethan screamed, struggling as they pulled him backward.

The figures in front reached for him too.

Cold fingers brushing his face—

His arms—

His neck—

"You came back," they whispered.

"You always come back…"

Ethan thrashed wildly—

"No! LET GO OF ME!"

The Lina-thing grabbed his chin, forcing him to look at her.

"Don't worry," it said gently.

"You won't have to choose again."

Its mouth opened—

Too wide—

Far too wide—

And inside—

Another door—

Begins to open.

Ethan's scream echoed into the darkness as the hands dragged him back—

Back toward the door—

Back toward something waiting on the other side—

Something that had been waiting—

For a very long time.

To be continued…
