Chapter 17 - The Choice

Ethan's hand trembled violently against his chest.

His fingers dug into his shirt, clutching the fabric like it was the only thing keeping him grounded.

But it wasn't.

Nothing was.

"Stop…" he whispered, his voice breaking. "Stop—please…"

His body didn't listen.

Slowly—

Painfully—

His fingers began to press inward.

Not just against his chest.

Into it.

Ethan screamed.

The sound echoed through the living walls as something beneath his skin moved.

Not his heart.

Something else.

Something trying to come out.

"GET OUT OF ME!" he shouted, dropping to his knees.

The ground pulsed beneath him in response, like it enjoyed his pain.

Behind him, the creature—the house—tightened its grip, its many faces twisted in terror.

"It's too late…" it whispered. "It's choosing you…"

"No!" Ethan gasped, shaking his head wildly. "I won't let it—"

You already did.

The voice cut through him like a blade.

His body froze instantly.

His breathing stopped.

His vision blurred—

And then snapped back into focus.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The world looked… clearer.

Sharper.

Too sharp.

He could see every vein in the walls.

Every movement.

Every pulse.

Every fear.

Ethan's lips parted slowly.

"What… did you do to me…?" he whispered.

A pause.

Then—

The answer.

I opened your eyes.

Ethan's heart pounded harder.

Faster.

Too fast.

His fingers suddenly jerked—

And before he could stop himself—

His nails pierced his skin.

Blood spilled instantly.

Warm.

Dark.

Real.

Ethan choked on a scream.

"NO—!"

But his hand didn't stop.

It dug deeper.

Like something inside him was guiding it.

Pulling.

Reaching.

Trying to break free—

"ETHAN!"

The voice shattered everything.

Lina.

Ethan's head snapped up.

There she was—

Not in the walls this time.

Standing.

Weak.

Shaking.

But free.

"Lina…?" his voice cracked, tears blurring his vision.

She looked worse than ever.

Her skin pale.

Her arms marked with dark veins spreading like cracks.

Her eyes filled with fear—

Not just for herself.

For him.

"Don't move!" she shouted, her voice trembling.

Ethan laughed weakly.

"I… I can't even control my own hand…"

Lina swallowed hard, stepping closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like approaching something dangerous.

"You have to fight it," she said.

"I'm trying…" he whispered. "I'm trying, Lina, I swear—"

His body suddenly jerked violently.

His back arched.

A sickening crack echoed through the space.

Ethan screamed.

The voice returned—

Stronger now.

Closer.

Stop resisting.

Ethan's head tilted unnaturally to the side.

His lips slowly curled into a smile.

Not his.

"You'll break him," Lina said sharply, her voice shaking but firm.

Silence.

Then—

Ethan spoke.

But not as himself.

"He's already broken."

Lina froze.

Her worst fear.

It was speaking through him now.

"Let him go," she said, her hands clenching into fists.

Ethan's body rose slowly to its feet.

Unsteady.

Wrong.

His head still tilted.

His eyes—

Empty.

Then they flickered.

For just a second.

"Lina…" he whispered weakly.

She gasped.

"Ethan!"

"Run…" he choked. "Before I—"

His body snapped again.

Violently.

His expression shifted instantly.

Cold.

Dark.

Gone.

Too late.

The voice laughed.

Low.

Satisfied.

"He's still in here," it said through Ethan's mouth. "That's what makes this fun."

Lina's breath hitched.

"You're not taking him."

"Oh," it replied softly, "I already have."

Ethan's hand suddenly dropped from his chest.

The bleeding stopped.

Too fast.

Too unnatural.

His wound began to close—

Right in front of her.

Lina stepped back in horror.

"No…"

The thing inside him took a step forward.

Then another.

"You should thank me," it said. "I'm fixing him."

"Fixing?" Lina's voice cracked. "You're killing him!"

Ethan's head tilted again.

"You humans always confuse the two."

The ground shook violently.

The heart behind them pulsed faster.

Louder.

Stronger.

The chains were completely gone now.

Whatever was inside—

Was free.

Lina's eyes flicked toward it—

Then back to Ethan.

No.

Not Ethan.

Not anymore.

"You said it needs a door…" she whispered slowly.

The creature—the house—let out a low, broken sound behind her.

"Yes…" it rasped.

Lina's chest tightened.

"And if it gets one…?"

The answer came from Ethan.

"It leaves."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Lina's hands trembled.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"No…" she whispered.

Ethan—the real Ethan—flickered again for just a second.

"Lina…" he whispered weakly. "Don't let me—"

The thing snapped control back instantly.

"Too late."

Lina's breath broke.

Her heart shattered.

But her expression slowly changed.

From fear—

To something else.

Something stronger.

Resolve.

Ethan noticed.

The thing noticed.

Its smile faded slightly.

"What are you doing?" it asked.

Lina reached behind her slowly.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"No…" he whispered.

But she had already pulled it out.

A sharp piece of broken wood.

Long.

Jagged.

Like a stake.

Her hand shook violently as she held it.

"I'm sorry…" she whispered.

Ethan's real voice screamed from inside.

"NO, LINA, DON'T—!"

The entity laughed.

"You won't do it."

Lina stepped closer.

Tears streaming down her face.

"I have to…"

"You love him too much."

Her grip tightened.

"That's exactly why I have to."

Ethan's body froze.

Just for a second.

The entity hesitated.

A mistake.

"Lina…" Ethan whispered again, clearer this time.

Their eyes met.

One last time.

"I'm scared…"

Her heart broke completely.

"I know…" she whispered.

Then—

She raised the stake.

The entity screamed—

"WAIT—!"

And in that exact moment—

Ethan smiled.

Not the creature.

Not the thing.

Him.

"Do it."

Lina drove the stake forward—

And everything went black.

For a second—

There was nothing.

No sound.

No light.

No pain.

Then—

THUMP.

The heartbeat returned.

Louder than ever.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Lina slowly opened her eyes.

Her hands were covered in blood.

But—

The stake…

It wasn't in Ethan's chest.

Her breath stopped.

"No… no, that's not possible…"

She looked up slowly.

Ethan was standing.

Right in front of her.

Unharmed.

Smiling.

Wider than ever.

Behind him—

The heart had split open completely.

And something was stepping out.

Something wearing Ethan's face.

The real Ethan's voice whispered faintly—

From somewhere far away.

"…you missed…"

Lina's blood ran cold.

Then the thing spoke.

And this time—

It wasn't inside Ethan.

It was outside.

Free.

"You chose wrong."
