Chapter 8 - Quiet Questions

Mahi returned home later than usual that day.

The café shift had been normal on the surface, but something about it lingered in her mind more than before. Anaya's words, especially. They didn't feel heavy, but they stayed.

She entered the house quietly, expecting the usual silence.

But this time, Ayaan was already home.

He was in the living room, sitting with a file in his hand. The lights were soft, the atmosphere calm, but his presence made everything feel structured the moment he was there.

Mahi slowed her steps slightly.

"uncle," she said softly.

He looked up.

"You're late."

Not a question. Just a statement.

"Yes," she replied. "Work was a bit busy."

Ayaan closed the file in his hand.

"Sit."

Mahi paused for a second, then sat on the sofa opposite him.

There was a short silence.

Ayaan studied her face carefully. He always did that when something didn't fully fit in his understanding.

"You started working at the café," he said.

Mahi nodded. "Yes."

"Why there?"

A simple question. But not an easy one.

Mahi thought for a moment.

"It was available," she answered.

Ayaan didn't react immediately.

He leaned slightly forward.

"Most graduates don't choose café jobs unless they have no other option."

Mahi stayed calm. "I needed experience."

"Experience in what?" he asked.

She hesitated just for a moment.

"Work."

That answer was simple, but Ayaan didn't look fully convinced.

Not suspicious in an emotional way. More analytical. Like he was observing a pattern that didn't completely align.

"You are adjusting quickly," he said.

"I try," Mahi replied.

Another silence.

Ayaan's gaze didn't leave her.

"How is the work environment?"

Mahi's expression remained steady.

"It's fine."

"People?"

"Normal."

"Pressure?"

"Manageable."

Every answer was short. Controlled. Careful.

Ayaan noticed that too.

He stood up slowly.

"Good."

That was all he said.

But instead of leaving immediately, he paused for a moment.

"Mahi."

She looked up.

"If anything becomes difficult… you don't need to handle it alone."

His tone wasn't soft, but it wasn't harsh either.

It was strict concern.

Mahi nodded slightly. "Okay."

Ayaan turned away after that and walked toward his room.

But Mahi stayed seated for a while.

His words weren't emotional.

They weren't warm.

But they felt like boundaries being set… not to control her, but to make sure she didn't fall into something alone.

Still, she didn't tell him everything.

Not about her writing.

Not about the laptop.

Not about the world she was slowly building in silence.

Because some secrets didn't feel like lies.

They felt like survival.

And outside her window, the night continued quietly… unaware that something hidden inside her was slowly growing stronger.
