Chapter 45 - Chapter 2: The Night of the Fireworks Festival

The fireworks festival was scheduled for the day after Umi and I had enjoyed a little pre-festival fun of our own.

Although our plans were for the evening, giving me plenty of time to relax, the same couldn't be said for the three girls. They had decided to gather at Amami-san's house to get properly dolled up for the occasion.

"Mm, it's about time I head over to Yuu's place," Umi said, glancing at the time. "Maki, I'll see you in a few hours."

"Have fun. I'm looking forward to seeing you in a yukata."

"…You're such a pervert, Maki."

"How did we get to that conclusion so fast?"

"Ehehe. I'll do my best to look my cutest, so you'd better shower me with compliments, okay? Oh, and I'll send you a selfie once I'm ready."

"…and I'll save it to a special folder."

"Pervert."

"I can hardly deny that."

Ever since Umi and I started dating, the collection of her cute pictures on my phone has been growing steadily. From her elegant furisode during our first shrine visit of the year to a snapshot of her wearing the hair ornament I gave her for her birthday, not to mention her casual outfits on our dates and even her swimsuit from the other day. She sends them to me periodically, always with a playful, "You'd be happy to have these, right?"

Of course, I see her in person all the time, but there's something special about gazing at her perfectly framed on my phone. I often find myself grinning alone while looking at them, especially when she's busy with errands or late at night before I fall asleep. Objectively, I know it's a bit creepy, but since no one ever sees me, it has become my little secret daily routine.

…Incidentally, Umi is fully aware of this. When I first told her about my habit, she shot me a bitter look and said, "Maki, that's a little gross," but she started taking more selfies afterward, so I can only assume she's okay with it. I'm truly grateful to have such an understanding girlfriend.

"Fufu, well then, I'm off agai—ugh, seriously, now of all times… He has the worst timing, as usual."

"Hm? What's wrong, Umi?"

"Ah, yeah. My bro's calling for some reason."

"From Riku-san? That's rare."

The name 'Asanagi Riku' was clearly displayed on Umi's phone screen. It had been about two months since he started working at 'Shimizu,' the inn in his hometown, and we hadn't heard from him directly. He kept in touch with his mother, Sora-san, who assured us he was "doing fine, for the most part," so I hoped it wasn't bad news.

"You should probably answer it, Umi."

"Yeah, you're right. …Hello, Bro? If you don't need anything, I'm hanging up."

"Don't you think he called because he has something to say…?" I muttered.

Even though he was working hard, Umi's cold attitude toward her brother hadn't changed. From the other end of the line, I could hear Riku-san's familiar, exasperated voice, which was a relief.

"Eh? Where am I now? At Maki's house, of course… Huh? Why? Geez, you're such a pain… Maki, here."

"He wants to talk to me?"

"Yeah. Says he wants to discuss about something."

I took the phone, put it on speaker, and addressed Riku-san.

"Hello, Riku-san?"

"Yo, Maki, long time no see. It's been two months. Has that idiot sister of mine been causing you any trouble?"

"No, not at all. More importantly, how are things on your end?"

"My end? It's tough, just as I expected. I'm up before the old lady every morning, heading to the market for ingredients, then it's chores all day, plus my cooking practice."

"You sound pretty energetic for all that. …Are things going well with Shizuku-san?"

"…Is that idiot nearby?"

"Yes. She's right next to me, listening in."

"Jeez, Maki, why'd you have to expose me?"

"What a meddlesome guy you are… Well, for now, it's going okay. We're both busy with work, so unfortunately, nothing like what you guys are hoping for is happening."

"…Wimp."

"Huh? Did you say something, you little punk?"

"Um, could you two please stop bickering through me?"

Still, it seemed his relationship with Shizuku-san was progressing, and as the one who gave him that final push, I was relieved.

"By the way, Riku-san, how are things with Reiji-kun…?"

"…Yeah. Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about today."

It sounded like that particular situation was proving to be a bit more difficult.

"Hey Bro, if this is going to take a while, I'm hanging up. I have to get to Yuu's house."

"Ah. Maki, sorry, but can I call you back later? I still have morning deliveries to take care of."

"Of course. I'm free anytime. Good luck with work."

"…Sorry for the trouble. Well then."

After the call ended, Umi and I exchanged a look. We were both thinking the same thing.

"…Stupid Bro. Mom and Dad told him to consult with them about things like that."

"Well, Riku-san has always been a responsible person… Besides, from the sound of it, it's probably not that serious."

He probably just didn't know how to close the distance with Reiji-kun. The boy had taken a liking to me, but he was naturally shy and likely found it hard to approach Riku-san, who was, from his perspective, a full-grown adult. He didn't dislike him, though, so I was sure the right trigger could change things.

"Anyway, if anything happens, contact me right away. He may be an idiot, but he's still my family."

"Yeah. …You're so kind, Umi."

"I-It's not like that! I just don't want him causing trouble for other people."

"Fufu, I see."

"…Mmmph."

"Um, Umi-san? That hurts, could you please stop pinching my cheek?"

"Then your flank it is."

"Both are not okay."

Umi was usually honest with me, but every now and then, her tsundere side would peek out, which I found incredibly cute.

After a bit more flirting, I saw her off. About ten minutes later, my phone rang—it was Riku-san. I would have liked to relax a little longer, but for someone who had always been there for me, I couldn't refuse.

"Yes, this is Maehara."

"Ah, hey there, Maki-kun, long time no see. Are you and Umi-chan still being lovey-dovey as usual?"

"Well, thanks to you… That voice, is that you, Shizuku-san?"

"Yep, you got it. Thanks for all your help the other day."

I was momentarily confused by the unfamiliar voice but relieved to find out it was her. It was still before noon, so perhaps they were taking an early break together. After exchanging greetings for the first time in two months, she passed the phone to Riku-san.

"…Well, as you can hear, things are going well with Shizuku."

"That's great… By the way, are you not getting along well with Reiji-kun?"

"…You can tell?"

"Well, I imagine it's a difficult situation."

Reiji-kun had returned to his mother's family home and was dealing with a new environment, new friends, and on top of that, a new man in his mother's life. It was a lot for a young boy to handle.

"Reiji-kun sometimes starts talking to me, but he mostly asks about you, Maki."

"Eh? Me?"

"Yeah. He's always asking, 'When is Onii-chan coming next?' He seems to think if I ask you, you might visit."

"…I see."

In other words, Reiji-kun was more interested in playing with me again and saw Riku-san as little more than a means to contact me. It wasn't that he was neglecting Riku-san, but he wanted to see me. Once that was fulfilled, his interest would likely shift, creating an opportunity for Riku-san to bridge the distance between them.

"So, I talked with Shizuku a bit… and we were thinking of going on a trip somewhere, the three of us."

"That sounds nice. Did you manage to get a day off after all this time?"

"Yeah, we have the afternoon off today and all of tomorrow. We were thinking of going to the fireworks festival. …I heard from Mom that you guys are going too, right?"

"Yeah, we are… Ah, don't tell me your request is—"

"…Yeah. I was wondering if you could be a 'lure' for us, Maki. Sorry for the poor choice of words."

So that was his request. With a rare day off, Riku-san and Shizuku-san wanted to use the opportunity to bond with Reiji-kun while also enjoying a long-overdue date. They knew Reiji-kun wouldn't refuse if Shizuku-san asked, but they wanted him to genuinely enjoy his first fireworks festival. For that, they needed an offer he couldn't resist.

"Maki, about today's fireworks festival, could you let the three of us join you? I know it's sudden and a bother, but we'll cover all everything."

In other words, the two adults would pay for everything. I'd have to run it by everyone, but I was sure no one would object. The others were used to sudden changes and were great at turning them into something fun.

"I understand. I'll talk to the others, and if I get the okay, I'll let you know. You can invite Reiji-kun then."

"Thanks, Maki. I feel like I've been relying on you for everything lately."

"I feel like I've been compensated for it, so we're even. …Well then, see you in a few hours."

"Yeah, take care."

"Maki-kun, see you later."

After ending the call, I immediately messaged Umi. A phone call would have been faster, but she might have been changing, and I didn't want to risk any unforeseen circumstances.

(Maehara) Umi, you free right now?

(Asanagi) Pervert.

(Maehara) …Sorry, were you changing (Asanagi) Nah, I'm good. But I was about to.

(Asanagi) So, what did my stupid bro say?

(Maehara) Yeah. About that…

I explained Riku-san and Shizuku-san's request. Umi seemed to have suspected something like this, as she was surprisingly calm.

(Asanagi) Ah, I see. So that's why Mom was acting weird last night.

(Asanagi) She was buying a ton of groceries.

(Maehara) You didn't hear from Sora-san?

(Asanagi) Nah. Well, she was dropping hints, so I thought maybe my bro or Dad was coming back…

(Asanagi) But I never thought she'd bring Shizuku-san and Reiji-kun too.

(Maehara) They're totally like a family now.

(Asanagi) I can't believe my bro beat me to it.

(Maehara) No, it's more normal for Riku-san to go first, age-wise.

(Asanagi) Eh? Aren't we getting married first? Next year, right?

(Maehara) D-don't tease me.

(Asanagi) Nihihi.

(Asanagi) Oh, Eri-san's calling me, so I'm going to her room.

(Asanagi) I'll tell Yuu and Nina, so you take care of Seki.

(Maehara) Roger.

If it had just been Riku-san, Umi might have said no, but with Shizuku-san and Reiji-kun coming, she was fine with it. Besides, Amami-san and Nitta-san already knew about Reiji-kun (Umi had told them), so everyone should get along just fine. I'd probably be the one looking after Reiji-kun for the most part, but that was fine. I wanted Riku-san and Shizuku-san to enjoy their long-awaited date.

After confirming with everyone, our group of five grew to eight. We decided to take the train to avoid traffic, and Sora-san and Eri-san would pick us up later.

I arrived at the station a little early and found Nozomu already there.

"Yo, Maki, sorry to keep you waiting. You're early."

"I got ready and couldn't settle down… You could have taken your time, Nozomu."

"I was planning to, but… I started imagining Amami-san in a yukata and, well, I couldn't settle down either."

"I see. Then we're in the same boat."

"You really love Asanagi, huh, Maki?"

"Well… she's my precious girlfriend."

Umi had already sent me a selfie of her in her yukata, as promised, along with a picture of the three girls together, so it wasn't a complete surprise. Still, I wanted to see her in person. Since she was so excited, I had decided to wear traditional Japanese attire as well—a jinbei my mom had bought for me in junior high. Though, it was a little disheartening that it still fit perfectly.

"By the way, are Asanagi's brother and the others coming today? They don't seem to be here yet."

"It's a bit of a drive. I got a message a little while ago that they arrived at the house, so they should be here soon… Oh, speak of the devil."

A car pulled into the station's roundabout, and Riku-san, Shizuku-san, and Reiji-kun, held in his mother's arms, got out. Sora-san, in the driver's seat, spotted us and waved.

"Riku-san, over here."

"! Oh. Shizuku, is Reiji-kun awake?"

"Yeah, but he still seems a little sleepy. …Reiji, Maki-onii-chan is here."

"Ngh… yeah."

It had been about two and a half months, but I could tell Riku-san and Shizuku-san were much closer now. They stood close, sharing gentle glances—they looked like a loving married couple with their son. It made me happy to know I had a small part in that.

"Onii-chan."

"Reiji-kun, it's been a while. Have you been doing well?"

"Mmm… yeah."

"I see. That's good."

He seemed to hesitate for a moment, but he didn't look unhappy with his current situation, and that was enough for me.

"Onii-chan, let's play a game."

"Sure. But we're going to the fireworks festival soon, so just for a little bit, okay?"

"Okay. …Ah."

Reiji-kun's eyes sparkled as he took out his portable game console, but he noticed the tall man next to me and immediately hid behind me. His shyness was as strong as ever.

"Reiji-kun, this is my friend, Seki-kun. He's tall, but he's a really kind person."

"Yo. Nice to meet you, Reiji-kun. Thanks for hanging out with Maki."

"......Mmm."

After a moment of staring at Nozomu, who had crouched down to his level, Reiji-kun settled himself between us. He was still leaning towards me, but he didn't seem to dislike Nozomu. Shizuku-san, who had been watching worriedly, let out a sigh of relief.

"…Hey, Maki."

"? Yes."

"I should ask just in case, but that friend of my sister's is coming today too, right?"

"Um, are you talking about Amami-san perhaps?"

"Yeah. I need to apologize for what happened back then."

"…Come to think of it, something did happen back then, didn't it."

Years ago, when Umi first brought Amami-san to their house, Riku-san's "certain action" had caused a major misunderstanding. He was apparently determined to clear the air.

…Assuming Amami-san didn't run away at first sight.

A few minutes later, the girls arrived in a minivan driven by Eri-san. Dressed in beautiful yukatas, they walked towards us with the pleasant clacking of their geta sandals.

"Maki, sorry to keep you waiting. Did you wait long?"

"A little. But I was playing a game with Reiji-kun, so the time flew by. Right?"

"…Mmm."

"Come on, Reiji, say hello to Umi-oneechan."

"…Hello."

"Yeah. Ehehe, hello~ Reiji-kun, do you remember me?"

"Mmm… yeah."

The slight pause before his nod was still there. For some reason, Reiji-kun hadn't taken a liking to Umi, and she could only offer a wry smile in response.

"…Umi, sorry for being unreasonable."

"You really are. Well, since Shizuku-san and Reiji-kun are here, I guess it can't be helped. …Bro, your vibe has changed a lot since you left home."

"Well, I'm working in the kitchen now, so I couldn't keep my long hair. Besides, this is more like going back to how I used to be."

Umi was right. Riku-san had cut his long hair and shaved his stubble, giving him a clean, sharp look. The transformation was striking, but this was the real him.

"Huh… This is the first time I'm seeing you like this, but Asanagi's brother is pretty handsome, just like his sister. To think this is the infamous crawler-bro."

"H-Hey, Nina-chi… don't say that in front of Riku-san… Um, I'm sorry. I could have kept it a secret, but I ended up talking about it."

"No, actually, I'm glad you brought it up. I haven't seen Amami-san since then, so I didn't have a chance to clear up the misunderstanding."

As Nitta-san had so delicately put it, the infamous "crawling incident" was, according to Riku-san, a simple misunderstanding. He had been home alone and so bored that he started crawling around the house, and it was just an unfortunate accident that Umi and Amami-san walked in at that exact moment. It was a bit questionable, but he seemed genuinely remorseful, so we decided to let it go.

"So that's what it was… Amami-san, I'm sorry for scaring you back then. I don't live in that house anymore, so feel free to come over and play from now on. My sister would be happy too."

"Yes! In that case, I'll take you up on that offer. Hey, Umi? I got permission from Riku-san, you know? Now I can casually visit your room too, right? Right?"

"…Well, as long as it's not every day, I don't mind. I'm sure Mom would be happy if you came over once in a while."

With greetings and introductions out of the way, it was finally time to head to the civic park. The train was already getting crowded, so we decided to continue our chat on the way.

The train was more packed than usual for a holiday.

"Umi, over here."

"Okay."

I took her outstretched hand and pulled her into my arms. We were pressed close together, but it was purely to make space for other passengers, with only a few ulterior motives on my part.

…Yes, just a few.

"Maki, you matched with me today. I'm happy."

"It's a fireworks festival, after all. I didn't want to look out of place next to you. …You look great, by the way."

"Fufu, thanks."

Umi's yukata was a cool, summery white with a pattern of colorful morning glories. Her hair was simply done up with a kanzashi, and my eyes were involuntarily drawn to the white nape of her neck. She looked just as stunning as she had in her furisode. Not wanting anyone else to see my beautiful girlfriend, I pulled her even closer.

"Jeez, you're hopeless, Maki. …Ehehe."

She rubbed her face against my chest affectionately. With several other couples in the car acting similarly, our public display of affection probably wouldn't draw too much attention.

…Of course, Amami-san, Nitta-san, and the others were watching us with exasperated looks that screamed, "These guys again."

"Ah, geez, it's so hot. I wonder if they have the heat on in our section instead of the AC?"

"Fufu, it can't be helped. Umi put in the extra effort after all. By the way, Maki-kun, what about us? Both Nina-chi and I got all dressed up, you know?"

"That's right~ it's not fair to only favor your girlfriend~"

"I think it's natural to favor my girlfriend, though…"

I glanced at the two of them.

"…Ah, yeah. You both look good… I think."

"Class Rep… you should say it with the same confidence you had with Asanagi."

I tended to lose my confidence when it came to anyone other than Umi, but they both had a great sense of style. Amami-san's yukata was bright and colorful, with a sunflower-shaped hair ornament that perfectly matched her active personality. Nozomu was certainly impressed, repeatedly giving me a thumbs-up from a distance.

And then, one person nearby was observing us closely.

"…Hmm, I see."

"? Um, Shizuku-san, is something wrong?"

"No, no. It's just, you look pretty normal on the outside, but you're quite popular, being on such good terms with three cute girls."

"You think so…? Well, Amami-san and Nitta-san are just friends."

We had opened up to each other recently, but I felt a large part of that was because I was already dating Umi. They could interact with me freely without any romantic complications.

"—Nah, I don't think so. To be honest, I've been thinking recently that I wouldn't mind dating the Class Rep."

""""...Eh?""""

Nitta-san's sudden, casual comment made the four of us freeze.

"N-Nina-chi? What are you saying all of a sudden?"

"Hmm? What's wrong, Yuu-chin? Did I say something that bad?"

"Y-you did, you did! And in the worst possible situation…"

Amami-san's gaze darted fearfully towards Umi. But Umi, usually quick with a jealous remark, seemed more bewildered than angry.

"…You might be right, Yuu. Even if Nina has a favorable impression of Maki, it's not right to say it out loud, especially in front of his girlfriend."

"You think so? But it's just a hypothetical. Besides, it's not like I really want to date the Class Rep. He's just barely in the potential romance category, and he's not even my type."

Hypothetical or not, saying it out loud changed things. She still thought of me as a 'friend,' but she had also labeled me a 'potential romantic partner.' It would be difficult to continue our relationship as before after a confession like that, and she had to have known.

"Well, don't think about it so seriously. Even if I think the Class Rep is 'nice,' I don't want him to break up with Asanagi. …I'll apologize for saying too much. There."

Amami-san looked like she had more to say, but given the circumstances, she backed down with a sullen expression.

"Alright, alright, you two stop right there. Don't ruin the mood before the festival even starts."

"B-but Umi…"

"Thanks for worrying, Yuu. But it's fine. No matter what Nina thinks, my relationship with Maki won't waver. Right, Maki?"

"Yeah. …Well, I was a little surprised, to be honest."

No matter how Nitta-san saw me, my feelings wouldn't change. The person I loved was Umi, and Umi only. Everyone else was a precious friend, but our relationship would never be more than that. There wasn't even a millimeter of a gap for anyone to squeeze into the bond between us.

"Shizuku-san, I'm sorry you had to witness our drama when you were kind enough to join us."

"Ah, no, no. It's been a while since I've hung out with so many young people, so maybe I tried a little too hard to join in the conversation…"

"Not at all, Shizuku-san, it's not your fault. It's this person right here."

"Oww…! A-Asanagi, that really, I give…"

Umi smiled pleasantly at Shizuku-san while firmly applying a headlock to Nitta-san's temple. The situation seemed to be calming down for now, but I couldn't believe Nitta-san had caused it all. The girl who always valued the group's atmosphere seemed to be deliberately ruining it today. She had apologized on the surface, but she hadn't retracted her statement. It felt like she wasn't making eye contact with Amami-san either. I never thought things would get so heavy so quickly.

"—Everyone, it looks like we're about to arrive, so stick together. If you get separated, call one of your friends immediately. Got it?"

"""""...Yes~"""""

We decided to put the conversation aside and followed Riku-san off the train. The station was already packed with people heading to the festival, and staff members were shouting through speakers to guide the crowd.

"Umi, let's stick together."

"Okay. …Ah, it's embarrassing, so don't stare at my nape too much, okay?"

"…Yes."

I held her close as we moved with the flow of people. The others formed a protective circle around Reiji-kun, with Nozomu and Riku-san at the front and back. We all held onto each other to avoid getting separated.

As we were moving, someone poked my back.

"U-um, Maki-kun."

"Amami-san, what's wrong?"

"Yeah. Um, well… where should I hold on?"

She was right behind me, her hands hovering hesitantly. She knew I was ticklish and was trying to find a spot that wouldn't bother me.

"Mmm… The hem or the sleeve, wherever is easy… With this crowd, it might be better to just firmly grab my back. See, like this."

I was pressed up against Umi, enveloping her from behind. This way, I could focus on her scent and hopefully avoid getting sick from the crowd.

…Though I heard someone whisper "pervert" from time to time.

"W-well, if you say so, I'll take you up on your offer—kyaah!?"

"! Whoa there…"

The moment she placed her hands on my shoulders, I heard a flustered voice and felt an incredibly soft sensation on my back.

"S-sorry, Maki-kun, someone pushed me from behind… J-Jeez, Nina-chi, you scared me."

"Ah~, sorry, Yuu-chin. Someone pushed me from behind and I lost my balance."

"I-I see. Sorry for doubting you, Nina-chi."

"Mmm-hmm. Asanagi's brother, please protect us."

"Eh? Ah, ahh, yeah…"

Riku-san looked unconvinced, repeatedly glancing behind him with a puzzled expression. I was facing forward, so I didn't know what had happened either.

…Hey, Umi.

Haa… That Nina. She probably pushed Yuu on purpose.

Our suspicious gazes fell on Nitta-san, but she paid us no mind, admiring the city's illuminations. To not even flinch after Umi's punishment earlier… today's Nitta-san was quite a handful.

After thirty minutes of slow, shuffling progress, we finally arrived at the civic park. More than half of the park was a large pond, making it an ideal location for a fireworks festival without disturbing the surrounding city. It was a popular event, attracting visitors from all over the prefecture.

"…Mom, I'm hungry."

"You're right. You didn't eat much at Grandma's house, did you? Hey Rikkun, I'm going to go buy some food. Can I ask you to save a spot and look after Reiji?"

"Ah, yeah. I'll let you know when I find a spot. If you can't find us, I'll come get you."

Hearing Shizuku-san say "grandma" felt jarring, but Umi and I decided to ignore it. If Riku-san and Shizuku-san got married, Sora-san would indeed be Reiji-kun's grandma. It was hard to believe they were estranged just a few months ago. It just went to show how quickly relationships could change.

The distance that was once vast could shrink in an instant, and closeness could just as easily turn to distance. Umi and I wanted to avoid that at all costs. I didn't care if people called us a lovey-dovey couple; I wanted to stay close to her forever, in heart and in body.

"Hey Maki, Shizuku-san will have a hard time alone, so let's go with her. It'll be more efficient with the three of us."

"Yeah. Shizuku-san, we'll accompany you."

"Fufu, thank you. Well then, shall we go?"

Leaving the others to find a spot, the three of us headed towards the food stalls. The area was bustling, with everything from classic yakisoba and takoyaki to ramen and steak. The famous shops already had long lines.

"He usually has staff meals, so I thought I'd let him have something junky for a change. What about you guys? It's on us, so choose whatever you like."

"Thank you. Umi, what do you want?"

"Mmm… I'd like to try something from a famous shop, but the fireworks will probably start while we're in line… Oh, does your part-time job have a stall here? That pizza place has a few branches, right?"

"Come to think of it… I'll give the manager a call."

Even if they were paying, it didn't feel right for five high school students to eat without considering the cost, especially since Riku-san had just started a new job. I contacted my manager and found out that our pizza place did have a stall, and he would be helping out there later. He said he'd talk to the company and get us an employee discount.

"Oh, nice. Well then, I'll line up at this hamburger stall, so you two take care of that. I'll get some drinks. Is cola okay for now?"

"Umi and I are fine with that. What about everyone else…?"

I quickly asked for their preferences in the group chat.

(Maehara) Everyone, what do you want to drink?

(Amami) Orange juice!

(Nina) Iced tea, I guess. With gum syrup.

(Nozomu) Iced coffee. Black.

(Nina) Seki's trying to act like an adult.

(Nozomu) Shut up.

(Amami) Oh, Riku-san wants tea, and Reiji-kun wants melon soda.

(Asanagi) Roger. I'll let Shizuku-san know.

(Amami) We'll let you know when we find a spot too~

"—So, that's about it."

"Okay. Fufu, this reminds me of the old days. My friends from high school… I wonder what they're doing now."

"You don't keep in touch? You seem so sociable, Shizuku-san, unlike my stupid bro."

"Mmm, I had a lot of friends, but we drifted apart after I went to college. I got married pretty early, so that made it even more so."

They say school friends are for life, but I think it depends. New environments, new jobs, new families—as you get used to them, old relationships can fade. It's a normal part of life, and it would probably be true for us as well.

"…So, you two, make sure you don't end up like me. Cherish the friends you have now. There will be times when you're too busy and it feels like a hassle, but as long as you don't let go, you'll stay connected."

""…Yes.""

Her words, born from experience, carried a weight that resonated with us. I made a mental note to remember her advice.

"Fufu, I got all preachy, didn't I? Come on, no more gloomy talk. Let's eat, drink, and have a blast today. Go on, you two, go get the food!"

"Whoa… Yes, well, see you later."

"Shizuku-san, please take care of that idiot from now on."

Parting with a smiling Shizuku-san, Umi and I headed to the Pizza Rocket stall. The crowd was getting denser as the start time for the fireworks approached, and it was getting dark. I held Umi's hand tightly in a lover's grip as we weaved through the people.

"Hey, Maki."

"Hmm?"

"About what Shizuku-san said earlier…"

"…Yeah."

"The five of us are in a pretty precarious situation right now, aren't we?"

"…Maybe so."

There was an unsettling atmosphere between Amami-san and Nitta-san, and we weren't getting along as well as we used to. It was probably because of Nitta-san's strange change in attitude towards me since the sports festival, but I couldn't understand why. She had always declared herself a 'die-hard looks-supremacist,' so it was hard to believe she had suddenly developed feelings for me. There had to be another reason, something important enough for her to risk her friendship with Amami-san.

"Anyway, all we can do is watch over them for now. I'd like to help them make up, but if we force it, things might just get more awkward."

"That's the thing. I thought things were going well after we finally made up and made new friends. …It's not going well, is it?"

She had made up with Amami-san last fall, rekindled her friendships with Nitori-san and Houjou-san, and made new connections in her second year. And now, Nitta-san's actions were creating waves. Umi was a kind girl, and I knew she was worried about them. As her boyfriend, I wanted to be there to support her.

"Umi."

"Ah…"

"It's okay. I'll be with you the whole time, Umi."

"…Okay."

I turned around and pulled Umi, who has an anxious look on her face, into a tight hug. I can feel the gazes of people passing by, but right now, I don't care about that.

"Maki, I'm sorry. I'm always relying on you."

"It's fine. You've been helping me out all this time, so now it's my turn to step up. Though, there's probably not much I can do."

"Well then, just comfort me for now."

"Yeah, got it."

No matter what happens, I'll always be on Umi's side—

Whispering that in Umi's ear, I slowly relaxed her tense body.

"…Yeah. Thanks, Maki. That's enough now."

"Are you sure? I wouldn't mind doing this a little longer, you know."

"You're such a perv, Maki. I know your hands were getting a little frisky while you were comforting me, you know."

"I got caught… Ow! A surprise forehead flick is a cheap shot."

"That's your fault, isn't it? …Fufu."

However, it seemed to be enough to lift Umi's spirits. Umi often pampers me, but in the end, when times are like this, being lovey-dovey with the person you love feels the best.

After composing ourselves, we walk for a few more minutes. Finally, a familiar sign comes into view. Perhaps because it's a prime spot for business, in addition to the food stall, there's even a kitchen car with the store's logo on it. As we wait in line to order, a woman who seems to have noticed us approaches us with a quick pace.

"Yo, Maki. And Umi-chan, too. Enjoying the fireworks festival?"

"! Oh, isn't that Emi-senpai? What happened to the manager?"

"Huh? The manager's at the store working with the part-time ladies. He was supposed to come help out here, but I begged him like crazy and forced him to let me come instead. I wanted to come to the fireworks festival too."

"…Poor manager."

When I talked to him earlier, he sounded quite cheerful on the phone, so the manager must have been looking forward to it… Well, I'll make sure to console him during my next shift. But, as expected of Emi-senpai. She has nerves of steel.

"By the way, what can I get for you? The manager told me you'd be coming, so I've prepared some recommendations."

Due to the limited ingredients available, the menu is smaller compared to the store, but they have all the classic items, so we decide to order a few safe choices. It would be fine if it were just me and Umi, but we can't exactly feed Amami-san and the others pizza loaded with extra garlic and cheese. So that we can all eat together happily, we order two or three large-sized pizzas, and for side dishes, we got chicken, fries, onion rings, and coleslaw, which we receive from Emi-senpai.

"Here you go, sorry for the wait~"

"Thank you. …By the way, senpai, there's just one thing I'd like to ask, if that's okay."

"? What is it? If it's my three sizes, I already secretly told you them the other day, right?"

"That's the first I'm hearing of it…"

She's probably just teasing me, but I wish she wouldn't say things like that with Umi right next to me. Umi acts like she doesn't mind… but it looks like she's firmly pinching my side. Ouch.

"Ahaha, sorry, sorry. So, what is it? Is it something serious?"

"I'll leave that to your judgment, senpai… Um, this is a hypothetical, okay? If the person you fell for had a girlfriend, or someone they had a crush on, what would you do, senpai?"

"I'd steal 'em!"

"…You answered instantly."

"Well, yeah, the better the person, the tougher the competition, so that's a given, right? Well, within reasonable limits, of course. You get it now, right?"

"Yes."

As long as it's within the bounds of free love, she would attack without hesitation. I had a feeling that would be her answer, but it's very much like Emi-senpai.

"Well, everyone has their own way of doing romance, so as long as you don't end up thinking 'If only I had done this back then…', I think you can do whatever you want. Better to do it and have regrets than to regret not doing it! Right. Oh, and of course, when I say 'do it', I don't mean doing that.

"You didn't need to tell me…"

Emi-senpai's answer had one unnecessary comment, but the conversation itself was very helpful, and there were parts I could personally relate to. Better to do it and have regrets than to regret not doing it. It's a positive way of thinking that applies to many situations, not just romance.

"Anyway, thank you for listening. Please, keep up the good work."

"You bet. You've got a shift tomorrow too, Maki, so don't you dare skip out on me. Umi-chan, I'm counting on you to manage Maki."

"Leave it to me. I need Maki to earn a lot of money for our dates, so I'll drag him to work by his collar if I have to. …Just kidding. Maki, don't push yourself too hard, okay?"

"Yeah. I'll do my best within reason."

After paying and thanking Emi-senpai again, we slowly retrace our steps. After we finished our shopping, we met back up with Shizuku-san. I asked her, and apparently, she just got a message that they've decided on a spot. All that's left is to meet up with everyone there and enjoy the fireworks that will be launched into the autumn night sky.

When we meet up, Riku-san somehow ended up next to Shizuku-san.

"…Hey."

"What is it?"

"Why is my big brother with Shizuku-san? What happened to Reiji-kun? Don't tell me you just left him…"

"Of course not. It's just, I was worried about leaving Shizuku alone…"

From what I hear, since he was entrusted with Reiji-kun, he was looking for a spot with Amami-san and the others at first, but something made him really worried, and he came after Shizuku-san. By the way, the other three offered to look after Reiji-kun properly, so there's no need to worry on that front.

"Fufu, Umi-chan, don't be so mad at him. It seems Rikkun got so worried that another guy might hit on me that he couldn't sit still. No matter how old he gets, Rik-kun is still a lonely and cute boy~ There, there."

I wondered what was going on at first, but the truth was very heartwarming. The Asanagi family, with their worried and jealous nature, are just like siblings. Well, the two of them would probably deny it forcefully.

"No, but, when I actually came to check on you, someone was about to hit on you, wasn't they? There were other guys checking you out too."

"Really? I don't think many people would hit on a woman in her late twenties with a kid…"

Shizuku-san says so modestly, but Riku-san's worries might have been spot on. As she says, she's in her late twenties, but Shizuku-san is very beautiful, and she looks so young that it wouldn't be strange if people thought she was four or five years younger. Standing next to the tall Riku-san, they look just like a perfect couple.

"W-well, for now, let's go to the spot they saved for us. Reiji-kun must be getting hungry and waiting for us."

"Yeah. The spot is a little far from the pond, but the view isn't so bad, and the restrooms are close, so it's quite convenient."

And so, with Riku-san leading the way again, we head to the spot, where Amami-san and the others, sitting on a blue tarp, wave us over. It seems Reiji-kun waited obediently, playing a game next to Nitta-san and Nozomu.

"Big brother, welcome back."

Reiji-kun, who spotted me, puts down his game console and comes running over. When I patted his head, his slightly stiff expression immediately softened.

"Sorry, we're late. Were you lonely without me or your mom?"

"Hm~… no. The big sisters were here."

The ones Reiji-kun looks towards are Amami-san and the others, who are smiling as they watch him. It seems they fulfilled their roles as the older ones perfectly.

"Ehehe, really? If you think so, Reiji-kun, then I'm happy too."

"…but you were really bad at the game."

"R-Reiji-kun was just too good. I'm not weak!"

"Sore loser."

"M-muki—!"

"…Hey, hey, Yuu-chin, what are you doing getting serious with a four-year-old?"

At first, Reiji-kun was shy and hid behind me or Shizuku-san, but it seems he's opened up while we were away. Even now, Amami-san and Nitta-san are patting his head, but he doesn't seem particularly embarrassed. As expected of the socially adept trio of Amami-san and her friends. They're perfect at handling young children. Shizuku-san also seems relieved to see her son acting as he usually does.

—We will now begin the 32nd Joto City Grand Fireworks Festival. To start things off, we will launch a 3-shaku shell.

[Note: A shaku (尺) is a traditional Japanese unit of length, roughly equivalent to 30.3 centimeters (about 1 foot). Thus, a 3‑shaku shell measures close to 91 centimeters (about 3 feet) in diameter.]

At the same time as the announcement, applause erupts from the spectators. The fireworks festival is finally beginning.

"Oh, looks like it's about to start. Maki, I'll leave the rest to you."

"Huh? Me? …Um, for now, let's enjoy the fireworks while eating some pizza. Ch-cheers."

""""Cheers!""""

Just as we raise our respective drinks, a loud boom echoes, and a large flower blooms in the night sky. Each one lasts only a few seconds, but it was a beautiful and powerful firework, worthy of riveting the gazes of everyone on the street to the night sky. The vibrations and sound that shake the air, and the smell of gunpowder that comes with the wind afterwards. Even after it's been launched, the afterglow still resonates with me.

"…Maki, it's beautiful, isn't it?"

"Yeah. Very."

"And what about me?"

"…Personally, I like you more, Umi."

"Fufu, I see. But, just for now, I'll allow you to look at the fireworks and instead of me."

"I am most grateful for that. …Fufu."

"Fufu."

Starting with the first giant firework, under the continuous barrage of fireworks that light up the night sky, Umi and I hold hands, huddle close, and firmly engrave this moment into our memories. Suddenly, I get curious and take a quick look at everyone else.

Amami-san and Nitta-san, who had a slightly tense atmosphere between them until we got here, and Nozomu, who looked at me with a bewildered expression at their state. And then there's the childhood friend couple, Riku-san and Shizuku-san, who came from far away to join us for the fireworks festival on short notice, and Reiji-kun. Just for this moment, they are all quietly reflecting the colorful, sparkling fireworks in their eyes.

…I wish this moment could last forever.

I thought that as I squeezed the hand of the girl I love.

For about two hours, we watched in awe at the various elaborate devices crafted by the artisans to liven up the fireworks festival, such as rocket fireworks, Niagara falls, and starmines. Finally, all the remaining fireworks were launched into the night sky, and amid the lingering afterglow of the flashy sounds and lights, a huge round of applause erupted from the spectators.

When it was announced that tonight's program had ended, the flow of people who had stopped to watch the fireworks starts to move again in a big wave. It was tough getting to the venue, but this time, when everyone starts to head home at once, will probably be the most grueling. Temporary buses that will probably head to various regions are constantly entering the venue, but all of them are packed to the brim, and the waiting lines are forming multiple long queues. We're taking the train, but it's not much different. The station must be extremely crowded with people heading home right now.

The first fireworks festival I attended with my friends was fun and will surely become one of the better memories of my high school life, but thinking about what comes after makes me a little depressed.

"Umi, I'm gonna go to the bathroom for a bit."

"Mm, see you later. …Maki, are you okay by yourself? In both senses of the word."

"What do you mean by that? It's fine, I'll be careful not to get lost."

I made sure to use the restroom before leaving the venue just so I don't have to go on the way home. I just mentioned the long lines for public transportation on the way back, but this one also has a considerable line. It seems like it will take a lot of time just to do my business… well, by then, the congestion will probably have eased up a bit.

"──Maki, mind if I join you?"

"! Riku-san. Yes, of course."

Riku-san, who had followed me, and I go to the back of the waiting line. I wonder if this is the first time we've talked alone like this since that 'romance consultation'.

The unique atmosphere of Riku-san, which I found difficult to deal with when we first met, now feels very reliable.

"How was your first fireworks festival with Shizuku-san and Reiji-kun?"

"Well, it was good… I guess. I got to have a proper date-like experience with Shizuku for the first time in a while, and then… there's the thing with Reiji-kun."

"Did you two get closer?"

"…Yeah. It's thanks to Shizuku being proactive and meddling, but today, I got to give Reiji-kun a shoulder ride for the first time. …I was happy."

I was also watching that happen, albeit secretly. For Reiji-kun, who had trouble seeing the fireworks because of the adults blocking his view, Riku-san, the tallest among us, really showed his adult side. Since their voices were drowned out by the sound of the fireworks, I don't know what kind of conversation they had. Since they're shy and bad with words, they might have been silent. However, Riku-san was firmly supporting Reiji-kun so he wouldn't fall, and Reiji-kun was firmly clinging to Riku-san's head so he wouldn't fall off. Just being able to see the two of them like that must have been a huge win for Shizuku-san.

"Well, that's about it for my wins. I could have just lazed around at home and recovered from the fatigue of work… but today was worth more than that. Thanks, Maki. Well, with that, I'm going back to Shizuku and the others."

"Huh? Riku-san, what about the restroom?"

"Ah. I just wanted to talk to you alone for a bit. …If anything happens, feel free to contact me anytime. If it's a request from you, I'll listen to it even if I have to push myself a little."

"Yes. Thank you. …B-Brother-in-law."

"Oh… th-that's, well, isn't it a little too soon for that? I mean, I don't mind if you call me that if you want to."

"…Then, I'll do so when I feel like it in the future."

I took the plunge and called him 'Brother-in-law', but it will probably be a long time before that name becomes familiar between me and Riku-san.

Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, Brother-in-law… It seems that for me too, there are still walls I have to overcome to deepen my bond with the Asanagi family.

About ten minutes after parting with Riku-san. When my turn finally came, I quickly did my business and left the public restroom.

"…Phew, that's a relief. This should be fine until I get home."

I had been holding it in a bit since the middle of the fireworks, so I won't have to suffer on the train home or anything. It's a bit of a dirty topic, but during big events like fireworks festivals, you have to be mindful of these kinds of hygiene issues.

"Well, it got a little late, so I should just hurry back to everyone and… huh?"

When I take out my smartphone to check the current time, a message from Umi comes in at just the right moment.

(Asanagi) Maki, are you done with the bathroom yet?

(Maehara) Yeah, just a moment ago.

(Maehara) Tell everyone I'm on my way back.

(Asanagi) Roger.

(Asanagi) By the way, Maki. There's something I want to ask you just in case.

(Asanagi) Is Nina around there?

(Maehara) Nitta-san?

(Maehara) With this crowd… has she gone missing?

(Asanagi) It's not that big of a deal…

According to Umi, right after I left the group to go to the restroom, Amami-san noticed that Nitta-san disappeared at some point. She apparently sent a message to the girls' group chat, which includes Amami-san and Umi, saying, 'I'm just going to the restroom,' so I think she'll come back eventually if we wait. …But I could certainly understand Umi and the others' worry.

(Asanagi) Just come back here, for now.

(Asanagi) If you get lost too, things will get complicated.

(Maehara) That's… true.

I'm worried about Nitta-san's whereabouts, but I'll deal with that after I meet up with everyone again. It's not about being a nuisance to everyone or anything like that at all. I just simply didn't want to make Umi worry any more.

"If she just went to the bathroom, she should be around here somewhere…"

Since this is the closest public restroom to where we were, Nitta-san should have come here if nothing special happened. As I head straight back to Umi, I casually scan the line of women waiting for the restroom to see if I can spot Nitta-san. I might seem suspicious if I stare, so I just glance over it.

"Hm? Oh…"

Just then, at the edge of my vision, I catch a familiar bright-haired ponytail swaying. The slightly wavy ends of her hair, and the familiar cool-colored scrunchie that could be called Nitta-san's trademark now. She disappeared into the crowd immediately, so I couldn't see her face or anything. There's a chance it could be someone else… but since everyone's worried, I can't help but be concerned.

"Umi told me to come back right away, but… I should at least contact everyone."

I saw someone who looked like Nitta-san nearby—just as I was about to send a message to our usual group chat. From behind me, someone's hand reached for my smartphone. A pickpocket—I thought for a moment, but the culprit was a surprising person.

"Huh? Um, wh-what are you…"

"──Class rep, hold on a sec."

"! Nitta-san."

"Finally found you. I went to all the trouble of chasing after you, class rep, so where have you been wandering off to?"

"…I could ask you the same thing."

"? What do you mean?"

The one who reached for my phone just as I was about to send a message, in an attempt to stop me, was the lost child (?), Nitta-san. There are a lot of things I want to point out, but the blank-faced Nitta-san doesn't seem to have a good grasp of the situation. For now, I tell her what Umi told me just a moment ago.

"Huh, really? I thought it was fine since I sent a message… I feel bad for making everyone worry."

"You should probably apologize to them later. …I'll just let them know I found you."

"Mm. But, before that, can you give me a little time? That's why I chased after you, after all."

"…You want to talk, just the two of us?"

"Yup. You're surprisingly quick on the uptake for class rep. That helps."

"The 'for class rep' part was unnecessary."

First Riku-san, and now Nitta-san in front of me. For some reason, I'm getting a lot of secret talks today. …Well, I have a lot of things I want to ask Nitta-san as well, so this situation isn't exactly inconvenient. For now, I let everyone know that I've found Nitta-san and that I'm bringing her back, but in exchange, I get to talk to her one-on-one for a few minutes until we get back to the group.

"…So, Nitta-san."

"What? You got something to say to me too, class rep?"

"Yeah. …Why did you say that to me back then?"

"The 'let's go to the fireworks festival together'… thing?"

"Yeah, that. …What really happened during the sports festival?"

After the sports festival cleanup, Nitta-san confessing to Takizawa-kun and getting rejected is probably true, just as she said. It was obvious to everyone that she was down since the morning that day, and I don't think her desire to be comforted was a lie either. However, for her to make a move on me because of that is, I have to say, inexplicable. Nitta-san probably isn't conscious of me as a 'member of the opposite sex'. She's just treating me as a 'friend'.

So, that's not what I want to ask Nitta-san. After the sports festival, what kind of change of heart did Nitta-san have? I have a feeling that's what triggered Nitta-san's sudden shift.

"Now it's my turn, but… before that."

"What is it?"

"Class rep, are you good at keeping secrets?"

"I think I am, but when it comes to Umi, I'm a bit of a softie."

"Ahaha, right? Well, I'm not expecting anything in that regard either."

"So, is it okay if I tell Umi about this?"

"It's fine, but… I'd rather you didn't, just for now."

Which means, Nitta-san doesn't want to tell anyone yet. Seeing her give a troubled, wry smile instead of a firm denial, I had a hunch that this matter might not be so simple.

From there, our conversation breaks off, and Nitta-san and I walk around the perimeter of the pond in silence. The food stall area, which had been wrapped in a lively and bright atmosphere just an hour ago, has finished its cleanup and is returning to the appearance of a dark, quiet night park.

"Hey, Maehara."

"…Huh? What did you just call me?"

"Huh? …What, you're Maehara, aren't you, class rep? Is it weird for me to call you by your name?"

"Sorry. It's just been a while since you called me by my name, Nitta-san."

It feels like most of the time Nitta-san only properly calls me by my name 'Maehara' when we're having a serious conversation. The first time was, I think, last December. On the day I was meeting my dad, we happened to be at the same family restaurant. Come to think of it, I feel like that was what started my connection with Nitta-san.

"Anyway, to continue what we were talking about."

"…Yeah."

"Maehara, if the person you liked had a boyfriend, what would you do?"

"That's… a difficult question."

I asked Emi-senpai the same thing a few hours ago, but if someone were to ask me the same question, how would I answer? Personally, it's a question that's hard to answer immediately. What to do if the person you like has a lover or someone they have feelings for.

"…I don't know, I guess."

"By 'I don't know', do you mean there's a possibility of either? Either you give up gracefully, or you use… some slightly dirty tricks to make them yours."

"No. It's probably… neither of those, I think."

"?"

Nitta-san tilts her head at my elusive words, but if I were to put my honest feelings into words right now, that's the only way I could say it.

"I still think about it sometimes, what I would do if Umi fell for someone else. I'm happy that Umi likes me, and I'm doing my best to reciprocate those feelings as much as possible. …But there are times when I feel insecure."

"Really? I think you two will be fine from now on, but… well, if you have something you want to talk about, I'll listen."

"Thanks. …So, to continue, if by some chance that happened, I thought I would probably hate both options. Giving up gracefully, and using dirty tricks."

I love Umi. It's embarrassing to say that I love her more than anyone in the world, but my feelings for her won't lose to anyone. Because I love her that much, I don't want to give up gracefully. She's the girl who taught me both the fun of spending time with friends and the beauty in falling for someone, so it's hard to just accept it and move on.

Well then, if I love her that much, would I resort to the kind of actions that Emi-senpai or Nitta-san would? That's also a dilemma.

"I don't want to give up on the person I love, but then that's too selfish, and it's like I'm not thinking about the other person…"

"So, you don't know?"

"…Something like that."

There probably isn't a right answer to this question. That's why everyone is struggling.

"I see. …You really are a kind idiot, class rep."

"Isn't the 'idiot' part unnecessary?"

"Nope, you're an idiot. No doubt about it."

Saying that, Nitta-san laughs in her usual manner. In the end, Nitta-san didn't tell me anything, so I still don't know the most important part… but I guess that can wait for the next opportunity. 'I'd rather you didn't, just for now'—Nitta-san told me that earlier, but her mind might change tomorrow. So, for now, all I can do is wait for Nitta-san to approach me.

"──Well, looks like we're out of time. Class rep, thanks for listening to me today. As a thank you, I'll take you on a date next time. Of course, it's on you, class rep."

"No, I'll do all of that with Umi, so…"

"What, you're no fun."

Saying so in a joking manner, Nitta-san returns to the group a step ahead of me.

"Geez, Nina-chi, where have you been? We were worried."

"Nina, are you okay? You really only went to the bathroom, right?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine. I was about to get hit on by some college students on the street, but I used the class rep who happened to be passing by as a decoy and ran away."

"You know, Nitta-san… Amami-san seems to be half-believing you, so try not to say such irresponsible things."

Although there was a small incident, everyone is back together now, so all that's left is to get on the train and go home. It's already completely dark, but we were able to kill time until the congestion cleared up, so we should be able to sit down and relax on the train home.

"Maki, shall we go home?"

"Yeah."

As I walk to the station holding Umi's hand, I absentmindedly watch everyone in front of me.

"Hey, hey, Yuu-chin, after we get to the station and split up, wanna walk home together part of the way? Or rather, can I get a ride in Eri-san's car too?"

"Yeah, sure. I'll ask my mom to take you all the way home, not just part of the way. Oh, what about you, Seki-kun?"

"Ah… no, I'm in the opposite direction of everyone, and I have my bike here, so…"

"Seki, you just made a really disappointed face, didn't you?"

"N-no, I didn't!"

Amami-san, Nitta-san, and Nozomu, were having a lively conversation ahead of us. And then,

"Shii-chan, shall I carry Reiji-kun for you? Your arms must be getting tired, right?"

"Thanks, Rikkun. …Ehehe, you always call me that when Reiji is asleep, don't you? It makes me so happy."

"R-really… Well, I'll try to call you that more like I used to from now on."

"You don't have to try so hard, you can just call me that in front of everyone."

"Sorry, it might still be a little difficult in front of the master and the missus…"

"Fufu, you're as serious as ever, Rik-kun."

Further ahead of the three of them, Riku-san and Shizuku-san are huddled together affectionately. Reiji-kun must be tired, as he's sound asleep in their arms. Everyone looks happy from the outside, and to someone who doesn't know anything, it would probably seem like they're living happy, carefree days. Of course, that includes me, walking hand in hand with the girl I love. But I know that's not the case at all.

No matter who it is, behind a calm smile, everyone is struggling and clashing with things from their past or present, and yet they still live their days as usual.

"…Maki, what's wrong? You're spacing out and looking at everyone."

"Ah, yeah… I was just thinking that everyone is working hard at various things."

"Fufu, what's that about? That's a given, isn't it? Studying, work, relationships… just by living normally, everyone is working hard in their own way. …Of course, that includes you, Maki."

"You think so? Do you think I'm working as hard as everyone else?"

"Of course. I can guarantee that with all my might."

"Yeah. Thanks, Umi."

Thanking my beloved girlfriend for her encouragement, I pick up my pace a little so I don't get left behind by everyone ahead of me. …So that I can live my usual self, just like everyone else.

※※※

"──Well then, let's split up here for now."

After confirming that all eight of us had passed through the ticket gate, Maehara, who was our leader for the day (supposedly), says so to us. I dragged everyone around with my whims and selfishness, but in the end, we were able to end the day with a fun fireworks festival. Seeing things like this makes me realize that the one who holds our group of five together is Maehara after all. He's being modest, but if he hadn't called out to us, I'm sure things wouldn't have turned out this way.

…If it were me now, I don't think a single person would have followed me.

That's how much I've done. I'm well aware of it.

"──Well, we'll be going now."

"See you all after the break."

The lovey-dovey couple, Maehara and Asanagi, and Asanagi's brother and his family, who joined on short notice, head back to the Asanagi house first.

…I don't quite get why Maehara is going with them to the Asanagi house, though.

"Bye-bye, Umi, Maki-kun~ Oh, and Riku-san, Shizuku-san, and Reiji-kun too~"

Five of the eight of us are gone, leaving the three of us behind. Me, Yuu-chin, and Seki. Since Maehara and Asanagi are always stuck together, when the five of us are together, we're often divided up like this. I get in between the two who have a rejected-rejector relationship, and try to ease the mood by cracking jokes to avoid any awkwardness. I'm doing it because I like it, and I enjoy chatting while teasing Seki, but. Just for now, it's a little awkward.

…Being alone with Yuu-chin.

"Well, I'm heading that way. …Amami-san, um, your yukata today was really pre… no, I think it was great. It's a bright color, just like you, Amami-san."

"Fufu, thanks, Seki-kun. Nina-chi was super cute too, wasn't she? I helped a little bit, you know?"

"Oh, really? Well, you were pretty good too, I guess."

"…Seki, we're done with you, so hurry up and go home. Shoo, shoo."

"Geez… well, whatever. I'm tired today too, so I'm just gonna go home and sleep. See ya."

"Yup, Seki-kun. See you at school."

"Later~"

I shooed Seki away with a bit of a salty attitude, but in my heart, I wanted him to stay a little longer. I still can't see the car that's coming to pick us up.

"It's just the two of us now, isn't it, Nina-chi?"

"Yeah. There were so many people just a moment ago, but it got quiet in an instant."

Just like the fireworks from earlier that shot up into the night sky and disappeared. At that time, all I had to do was look up at the sky without thinking about anything.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?"

"It's amazing, isn't it?"

Just by saying elementary school-like impressions to the person next to me, the long two hours passed in the blink of an eye, but now, these few minutes feel incredibly slow. Who was it that made the air between the two of us, who were supposed to be having fun with a conversation with no substance, so awkward? I want to grab them by the scruff of the neck and give them a lecture right now.

…If I did it myself, I'd just be a weirdo, so I'll just do it in my head.

"H-hey, Yuu-chin."

"Huh? Ah, y-yeah, what is it?"

"…The fireworks festival was fun, wasn't it?"

"Yeah, it was. I want to go again next year. …With everyone again."

"…Yeah."

Why is it so hard to find the right words just to talk to a friend? A time for just the two of us, prepared as if it were made for us. I know exactly what Yuu-chin wants to ask me. I can almost hear Yuu-chin, who is glancing at my face, trying to speak up.

──Why did you say that to Maki-kun?

Even if we're putting on a friendly facade on the surface so as not to worry Maehara and Asanagi, I'm sure Yuu-chin has been mad at me this whole time. Probably since the start of summer vacation, until now. In her heart, all this time. Nakamura-san and Takizawa-kun, and then Maehara and Asanagi──I repeatedly did things to deliberately cause trouble for the two couples who were supposed to be bound by a bond so strong there was no room for anyone else to get in. Without any remorse, over and over again.

Nakamura-san and the others weren't directly involved, so they let it slide with a wry smile, but she probably couldn't stand what I did to Maehara and Asanagi. She's indifferent to her own affairs, but when it comes to her friends, she becomes extra sensitive. She tries to be considerate when she doesn't have to, in unnecessary ways. That part of Yuu-chin──of Amami Yuu, is what I liked. And what I hated.

"Yuu-chin, aren't you going to ask?"

"Huh?"

"Why are you meddling with my precious friends?, that is."

"Tch…!"

At that, Yuu-chin's expression clearly tensed up. She seems to be trying to hide her agitation, but it's so obvious that I can't help but let out a small, inappropriate chuckle. Seeing that, Yuu-chin gives me a displeased look. Not her usual pout, but the one she makes when she's really angry. I feel like I saw this expression at the end of the sports festival the other day, too. Once it gets to this point, it's no longer a joke. There's no turning back.

"…Nina-chi, why are you laughing?"

"Sorry, Yuu-chin. But it's just so clearly written all over your face, 'You hit the nail on the head'."

"…I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh, so you're going to play dumb. That's not like you, Yuu-chin."

"! Because, that's──ah, no, it's nothing."

Even though she's this much of a mess, it seems Yuu-chin intends to play dumb to the end. Even if I find out, and even if that girl, her best friend, notices, she'll keep that last word locked deep in her heart. That is the way that Amami Yuu is trying to choose.

…For me, it was the last option I wanted Yuu-chin to choose.

"Well then, Yuu-chin, can I ask you something instead?"

"…No."

"Why?"

"No means no."

"Don't suddenly start throwing a tantrum like a child. You're in high school now, you know."

"…I don't want to hear that from you."

She's finally stopped calling me 'Nina-chi'. Just when I thought I had found a friend I could have a long relationship with, I'm back to square one.

…What in the world am I doing?

I should have just gone along with her like I always do. If I had just suppressed my true feelings and agreed with her, I could have maintained a peaceful relationship, even if it was just on the surface. When I look at Amami Yuu──no, at 'Yuu-chin', I can't help but get serious. I can't leave her alone, and I end up meddling where I shouldn't.

"Hey, Yuu-chin."

"......What."

Taking a small breath, I threw the decisive question at her.

"──────────────────"

Seeing her expression at that moment, I think to myself once again.

Amami Yuu, are you really, really okay with that──?
