Chapter 1 - 1) Lost in the Endless Sands

The Lone Warrior

"Hello there. My name is Lucious, and this is my most loyal companion, Hero. We've spent the last twenty years—nearly my entire life—navigating the world's most unforgiving landscapes, from frozen ice lands and dense forests to these barren deserts. At twenty-six, my legs know little else but the rhythm of the march, searching for the bare essentials: food, water, and a safe place to sleep.

The reason we never stop is simple: survival. This world is a playground for the corrupt. Bandits, pirates, and ruthless bounty hunters lurk in every settlement, making the scorching sun and the jagged terrain a much kinder alternative to the cruelty of men. We choose the heat over the blade."

A Golden Opportunity

Today is particularly grueling. In this wasteland, finding a drop of water or a scrap of food is a monumental task. As I sat to rest my aching bones, my eyes caught a silhouette shimmering in the heat haze—a camel.

In a place like this, a camel isn't just an animal; it's a gold mine. My supplies have dwindled to almost nothing, and that creature represents enough meat to keep us alive for weeks. It is our only hope for the future.

The Hunt Begins

The beast is at least a kilometer away, and the desert sun has already drained much of my strength. But the necessity of the hunt overrides the exhaustion. Sensing my intent, Hero begins to wag his tail in frantic excitement. He is built for this—long-limbed, slim, and incredibly fast.

I stood up, shaking off the lethargy, and stretched my stiff muscles. I looked down at my partner and asked, "Are you ready for a real meal, Hero?"

With a shared look of determination, we set off. The hunt was on.Conservation of energy is vital as Hero and I stalk our prey. Running swiftly by my side, Hero remains focused while the camel, still oblivious to our presence, remains calm. We are at the halfway point when I spot a sandstorm billowing toward the camel. The situation is dire; we are trapped between the hunt and the elements.

We have to secure this kill before the storm hits. With only 100 meters left, the camel finally detects us and bolts directly toward the approaching dust wall. Hero is flagging, his tongue lolling with exhaustion, but we push on. This wild, black camel is exceptionally fast, and the risk is mounting. Just as we prepare for a final burst of speed, the sandstorm swallows us whole, forcing us to abort. The camel vanishes into the grit. I quickly scoop up Hero and find refuge against a tall stone outcropping. Hero remains remarkably composed, sensing the danger.

The Aftermath

The Wait: We pressed against the stone for an hour until the storm finally subsided. Despite being wrapped in blankets, we emerged buried in sand.

The Toll: It is mid-day, and the heat is grueling. Having depleted our energy in the chase and the storm, we are forced to camp here tonight.

The Scarcity: Our supplies are dangerously low. Lucious sits in the sliver of shade provided by the rock, the sun's intensity nearly unbearable.

The Last Meal

With our valuable hunt lost, the remaining rations are insufficient for both man and beast. Lucious selflessly gives the bulk of the dried meat to Hero, despite it being tough and hard to digest. Now out of meat entirely, Lucious prepares a meager soup from a few stray vegetables and our remaining water, sharing the final drops with his loyal companion.

Lucious remained silent, silencing his thoughts as he sharpened the edge of his curved blade—the only weapon he possessed. While a sword was hardly the ideal tool for hunting a camel, Lucious's mastery of the steel was absolute; he had been honing his craft since the age of ten.

He sat motionless for two more hours until the sun began to dip below the horizon. Knowing he needed to find shelter before the desert went dark, Lucious prepared to move. However, his dog, Hero, grew restless and began barking before suddenly bolting in the opposite direction. Alarmed by this unusual behavior, Lucious gave chase, nearly losing sight of the dog until he found him standing proudly with a wild chicken in his jaws.

Relieved and proud, Lucious embraced his companion. He secured the chicken to his shoulder and, guided by the lingering twilight and the brilliance of the desert stars, the pair continued their trek toward a distant silhouette of mountains. There, they discovered a small rocky alcove perfect for a campsite.

Lucious set to work immediately:

Preparation: He plucked and cleaned the bird, tossing the scraps to Hero as a reward.

Preservation: He sliced the meat and hung it from the rock face to dry.

The Meal: Lucious grilled the heart, liver, and remaining portions over a small fire.

Once satisfied, the exhausted pair curled up together and fell into a deep sleep.

At dawn, they began exploring the rugged terrain. Lucious searched for any signs of vegetation, eventually discovering a patch of edible leaves and a slow trickle of water weeping from a crack in the stone. He patiently filled his leather flask, drinking his fill before moving on to find a cluster of date palms. After climbing the trees to harvest the fruit, he returned to camp, packed his meager supplies, and prepared to face the scorching heat of another day's march.
