The air didn't just tremble—it broke.
Teresa felt it before she understood it.
A fracture. Not in the ground. Not in the walls.
Inside her.
Like something ancient and furious had finally woken up… and realized it had been trapped for far too long.
"Teresa… don't—"
Lester's voice cut through the chaos, sharp with panic. Not command. Not control.
Fear.
That alone should've stopped her.
It didn't.
The creature lunged.
No—they did.
Three of them now. Faster than before. Smarter. Their hollow eyes no longer empty… but aware.
Watching her.
Recognizing her.
Like predators circling something that wasn't prey—
—but competition.
Teresa's breath came in ragged bursts. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs.
"Why are they looking at me like that?" she whispered.
Marcus didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
"They're not trying to kill you," he said quietly. "They're trying to test you."
The nearest creature struck.
Teresa reacted on instinct.
Her hand lifted—
—and the world bent.
Not metaphorically.
Reality warped.
The creature froze mid-air.
Time didn't stop… but it slowed. Twisted. Like it had to fight through something invisible just to exist.
Teresa's eyes widened.
"What… did I just—"
Then it exploded.
Not in blood.
In light.
A violent, blinding burst of energy ripped outward, slamming into the walls and throwing the other creatures back like ragdolls.
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Terrifying.
Lester stared at her.
Not with awe.
With alarm.
"Teresa…" he said slowly, stepping toward her. "What did they do to you?"
"I don't know," she breathed.
But her voice wasn't entirely hers.
There was something layered beneath it.
Something older.
The ground shook again.
The remaining creatures rose—damaged, but not defeated.
One of them… smiled.
Actually smiled.
"They're evolving," Marcus muttered. "Or responding to her."
"Enough talking," Lester snapped.
He moved in front of Teresa, instinctively shielding her.
"I've got this."
That did it.
Something inside her snapped.
"I don't need you to protect me."
The words came out sharper than she intended.
Colder.
Lester froze, glancing back at her.
"That's not what this is."
"Then what is it?" she shot back. "Because every time something happens, you act like I'm going to break."
"That's because you might!"
The tension hit like a shockwave.
Even Marcus stepped back.
Lester's jaw tightened. His eyes burned—not just with fear now.
Jealousy.
Frustration.
Something darker.
"I don't know what you're turning into," he said, voice low. "And yeah—that scares the hell out of me."
Teresa's chest tightened.
For a split second… she hesitated.
And the creatures took advantage.
They attacked together.
Fast.
Coordinated.
Deadly.
Lester barely blocked the first strike. The second knocked him off balance. The third—
"LESTER!"
Teresa didn't think.
She reacted.
Power surged through her like a storm breaking loose.
Not controlled.
Not contained.
Unleashed.
The ground beneath her feet cracked.
The air screamed.
Her body lifted slightly off the floor, surrounded by a flickering aura—dark gold and violent blue intertwining like something alive.
The creatures stopped.
Not in fear.
In recognition.
Teresa's eyes glowed.
Not human anymore.
Not entirely.
"You want to test me?" she said, her voice echoing unnaturally.
"Then come."
They did.
All at once.
And she destroyed them.
Not with punches.
Not with weapons.
With will.
One creature lunged—she twisted her hand, and its body contorted mid-air like gravity no longer applied to it.
Another charged—she stepped forward, and it disintegrated into shards of light before it could even touch her.
The last one tried to flee.
Teresa raised her hand.
And pulled.
The creature was dragged back across the room like an invisible force had grabbed its very existence—
—and crushed it.
Silence fell again.
But this time…
It wasn't relief.
It was fear.
Marcus stared at her, pale.
"This… this isn't just enhancement," he whispered. "She's rewriting physical laws."
Lester didn't say anything.
He just looked at her.
Like he didn't know her anymore.
Teresa slowly lowered her hand.
The energy flickered.
Faded.
Her body dropped back to the ground.
For a moment… everything seemed normal again.
Then—
A voice.
Soft.
Right behind her.
"You're still holding back."
Teresa froze.
That voice…
She turned slowly.
And her blood ran cold.
Standing in the shadows—
was someone who looked almost like her.
Same glowing eyes.
Same energy pulsing beneath the skin.
But darker.
More stable.
More controlled.
"No…" Teresa whispered.
Marcus stepped forward, stunned.
"That's impossible."
The girl tilted her head slightly, studying Teresa like a reflection that had learned how to think for itself.
"Subject A-17," she said calmly.
"Prototype failure."
Teresa's chest tightened.
"What… did you just call me?"
The girl smiled faintly.
"I'm what happens when they get it right."
Lester immediately moved closer to Teresa, protective instinct flaring hard.
"Stay behind me."
But this time—
Teresa didn't move.
Her gaze stayed locked on the girl.
On the truth standing right in front of her.
"You're lying," she said.
"Am I?" the girl replied.
Then her eyes flicked toward Lester.
Just for a second.
That's all it took.
Teresa felt it.
A shift.
A pull.
Something deep inside her reacting—
violently.
"Careful," the girl said softly. "You're already unstable."
Lester stepped forward. "Say one more word—"
The girl moved.
No warning.
No build-up.
Just—
gone.
And then—
Lester screamed.
Teresa's heart stopped.
She turned—
—and saw him.
On his knees.
Blood spilling from his side.
The girl stood behind him, her hand buried deep in his body.
Like it was nothing.
Like he was nothing.
"LESTER!"
Teresa lunged forward—
But the girl yanked her hand out and disappeared again before she could reach her.
Lester collapsed.
Teresa caught him before he hit the ground.
"No… no no no—stay with me—stay with me!"
His breathing was uneven.
Shallow.
"Teresa…" he rasped.
Her hands trembled as she pressed against the wound.
"I'm here—I'm here—you're fine—you're going to be fine—"
But the blood wouldn't stop.
Her power flickered again.
Wild.
Unstable.
"Fix him," Marcus said urgently. "If you can do what you did—fix him!"
Teresa looked down at her hands.
At the energy trembling around her fingers.
She didn't know how.
She didn't know what she was anymore.
"Please…" Lester whispered weakly.
That broke her.
Something inside her shattered completely.
"I won't lose you."
The power surged again.
Stronger.
More violent.
More uncontrolled than before.
Light exploded from her hands—
And Lester screamed.
Not in relief.
In pain.
Teresa froze.
Horror flooding her face.
"I… I didn't—"
The energy intensified.
Out of control.
Tearing through him instead of healing him.
"STOP!" Marcus shouted.
But she couldn't.
She didn't know how.
Lester's body arched as the power ripped through him—
And then—
Everything went dark.
Silence.
Stillness.
Teresa's hands dropped.
The glow vanished.
Her breathing hitched.
Slowly…
very slowly…
she looked down.
At Lester.
Lying completely still in her arms.
Not moving.
Not breathing.
Not—
"Lester…?"
No response.
Her voice broke.
"Lester… wake up…"
Nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
Carefully.
Checked his pulse.
And then—
his expression changed.
Teresa saw it.
And her entire world collapsed.
"No…"
Her voice came out as a whisper.
"No no no no—"
Behind them—
a faint laugh echoed from the shadows.
The other girl's voice.
Cold.
Certain.
"This is why you were never meant to survive."
Teresa didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
Didn't blink.
Her eyes slowly began to glow again—
But this time—
there was nothing human left in them.
And somewhere deep inside…
something finally let go.
