Cherreads

Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18: The End of Everything

Reality screamed.

Not metaphorically.

Not in some distant, poetic way.

It literally screamed.

The sky above fractured into jagged shards of light and darkness, splitting like broken glass as Teresa's power surged beyond anything it had ever been before.

Marcus dropped to one knee, clutching his head. "She's… tearing it apart—this isn't energy anymore—this is—"

"—existence," he finished under his breath.

Teresa didn't hear him.

Or maybe she did—

and didn't care.

Her eyes burned with something no longer human, no longer controlled, no longer hers.

"You took him from me."

Her voice echoed across space itself, layered with something vast and merciless.

The entity shifted, its form flickering violently as the world around it destabilized.

"Critical anomaly detected."

For the first time—

its voice wasn't calm.

It was… strained.

Good.

Teresa lifted her hand slowly.

And the world obeyed.

The ground beneath the entity twisted upward, folding in on itself like paper being crushed by an invisible force. The air compacted, pressure building to impossible levels as cracks spread outward in all directions.

The entity resisted.

It pushed back.

Its form expanded, stabilizing as it fought to maintain structure against the collapsing reality around it.

"Containment failure imminent."

Teresa's expression didn't change.

"Too late."

She clenched her fist—

And everything collapsed.

The entity's form shattered—not into pieces, but into fragments of something that shouldn't be able to break. Light, shadow, matter, space—all tearing apart at once.

A deafening silence followed.

Then—

nothing.

It was gone.

Erased.

Not destroyed.

Not defeated.

Removed.

Marcus stared in horror.

"…she did it."

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The cracks in the sky didn't heal.

They spread.

Faster.

Wider.

Deeper.

Like once something had been broken—

it couldn't be undone.

Teresa stood at the center of it all, her chest rising and falling slowly, her power still pouring out of her like an endless storm.

But now—

there was nothing to stop it.

Nothing to focus it.

Nothing to hold her back.

"Teresa…" Marcus said carefully, forcing himself to stand despite the pressure crushing down around him.

She didn't respond.

Her gaze remained fixed on the empty space where the entity had been.

"He's gone."

The words came softer this time.

Quieter.

But somehow… worse.

Marcus swallowed hard. "Teresa, listen to me—we need to stabilize this. You need to stop—"

"I can fix it."

He froze.

"What?"

Teresa's eyes flickered slightly.

"I can fix it," she repeated.

Her voice sounded almost calm again.

Almost sane.

Marcus shook his head immediately. "No—no, that's exactly what got us here—every time you try to fix something, it gets worse—"

"I didn't go far enough."

His blood ran cold.

"What… are you saying?"

Teresa slowly looked up at the fractured sky.

At the broken world.

At everything falling apart around her.

"I only rewound a moment."

Her fingers twitched.

Power gathering again.

Stronger.

More controlled.

More dangerous.

"But if I go back far enough…"

Marcus stumbled backward. "Teresa, don't—"

"I can stop all of this before it ever started."

Silence.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Marcus's voice dropped to a whisper. "You're talking about undoing… everything."

Teresa didn't deny it.

Her gaze drifted—just slightly—

to where Lester had been standing.

Or where he should have been.

"I won't lose him again."

Marcus clenched his fists. "And what about everything else? Everyone else? You don't know what that kind of reset would do!"

"I don't care."

The honesty in her voice was terrifying.

The world trembled harder.

Buildings in the distance began to collapse, unable to withstand the distortion spreading outward from her.

Marcus took another step forward, desperation creeping in. "That's not you talking!"

She looked at him.

And for a second—

just a second—

there was something there.

Pain.

Grief.

A flicker of the girl she used to be.

"I tried," she said softly.

"I tried to be careful."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"But it wasn't enough."

The power around her surged again.

The cracks in the sky widened, revealing something beyond—something empty, something vast.

"And now…"

Her eyes hardened.

"I'm done trying."

She raised both hands.

The world bent.

Time itself began to distort, pulling backward in violent, uneven waves. Marcus felt it instantly—like his body was being dragged through moments that hadn't happened yet and memories that were already gone.

"TERESA, STOP!" he shouted.

But she didn't.

She couldn't.

Because deep down—

she didn't want to.

The rewind began.

The facility flickered—

rebuilding itself in fragments.

Debris lifted from the ground, reversing its fall.

The cracks in the walls sealed—

then broke—

then sealed again—

caught between two timelines fighting for control.

Marcus staggered, barely holding onto consciousness. "She's… not just rewinding… she's colliding timelines—this is going to—"

He never finished.

Because suddenly—

everything stopped.

Again.

But not like before.

This time—

it wasn't Teresa.

A new presence filled the space.

Cold.

Immense.

Unavoidable.

Teresa's eyes widened slightly.

For the first time since Lester disappeared—

she looked… uncertain.

A voice echoed.

Not from the sky.

Not from the ground.

From everywhere.

"Temporal violation detected."

Marcus's breath caught. "No… no way…"

Teresa's hands trembled slightly.

"What… is that?"

The voice continued.

"Unauthorized reality manipulation exceeding acceptable thresholds."

The cracks in the sky froze.

The rewind halted mid-motion.

Everything suspended in a terrifying stillness.

And then—

the space in front of Teresa opened.

Not like a door.

Like a tear.

Something stepped through.

Not large.

Not monstrous.

Not chaotic.

It looked… human.

Almost.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly composed.

And infinitely more terrifying than anything before.

Teresa's voice came out quieter than she expected.

"…who are you?"

The figure tilted its head slightly, observing her like she was a problem already solved.

"Correction protocol initiated."

Marcus whispered, barely audible—

"…this is bad… this is really bad…"

Teresa's power flared instinctively.

"Stay back."

But the figure didn't react.

Didn't move.

Didn't need to.

"Subject A-17," it said calmly.

"You have exceeded your allowed parameters."

Teresa's jaw tightened. "I don't have parameters."

The figure paused.

Then—

"Incorrect."

A single step forward.

And Teresa felt it—

For the first time—

something stronger than her.

Her power faltered.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Her eyes widened.

"What… are you?"

The figure's gaze locked onto hers.

Unblinking.

Unfeeling.

"We are the ones who reset what you break."

Silence.

Absolute.

And then—

the words that changed everything—

"And you…"

A pause.

A decision already made.

"…are no longer permitted to exist."

Teresa's heart stopped.

Marcus shouted something—

She didn't hear it.

Because in that moment—

for the first time since all of this began—

Teresa felt fear.

Real fear.

And the figure raised its hand—

The world holding its breath—

As reality itself prepared to choose—
