Chapter 61 - CHAPTER 58: The First Gathering

Six months later, they held the first gathering.

It was on neutral ground—the Pearl Coast, in a field overlooking the ocean. Vampires and wolves, together. Not many. A few dozen from each side. The curious. The hopeful. The ones who had seen the evidence and believed.

Cassius and Aldric stood together at the center. Two old enemies, now allies. They spoke about the bonds. About the Silent Ones. About the choice to heal rather than shatter.

Kael watched from the edge of the crowd. Lyra was beside him, her hand in his.

"Nervous?" she asked.

"No. You?"

"A little. This is either the beginning of something new or the end of everything."

"Maybe both."

The speeches ended. People mingled. Awkward at first, then less so. A young wolf and a vampire who had been turned in her twenties discovered they both loved the same band. An elder from the Council and an elder from the pack argued about history, then laughed at their own stubbornness.

Mira found them near the refreshment table. She was talking to Helena, their heads close together.

"What are they discussing?" Lyra asked.

"Music, I think. Helena wants to preserve the old songs. Mira wants to record new ones."

"Alliance through art."

"Why not?"

The gathering lasted until dawn. When the vampires retreated from the sun and the wolves returned to the forest, something had shifted. Not a peace treaty. Not yet. But a beginning.

Kael and Lyra stayed on the cliff, watching the sunrise.

"Six months ago, I was standing in the rain outside a record store," Lyra said.

"And I was picking up a Nick Drake album."

"Now we're here."

"Now we're here."

He kissed her. The sun rose over the Pacific. And somewhere, in the spaces between their kinds, the bridge continued to heal.
