Chapter 62 - CHAPTER 57: The Pearl Coast Revisited

They returned to the house on the cliff.

Not to hide. To rest. The past weeks had been a blur of travel and revelation and confrontation. Lyra needed silence. She needed the ocean.

Kael understood. He walked with her on the beach in the early mornings, his hand warm in hers. They talked about nothing. Music. Books. The way the light looked on the water.

One evening, they climbed to the widow's walk. The sun was setting, painting the Pacific in shades of gold and rose.

"My mother used to come up here," Lyra said. "I told you that. But I didn't tell you why."

Kael waited.

"She was human. My father loved her, but she was human. She knew she would age and die while he stayed the same. She chose not to be turned." Lyra paused. "I used to think she was afraid. Of immortality. Of becoming something other than herself. But now I think she was just... complete. She didn't need forever. She had what she wanted."

"What did she want?"

"To be seen. To be loved. To matter to someone." Lyra turned to face him. "I think I understand that now."

Kael reached for her. "You matter to me. More than anything."

"I know."

They stood together, watching the sun sink into the ocean. The sky darkened. Stars appeared.

"The prophecy said we would break the silence," Lyra said. "Start the song. What song?"

"I don't know. Maybe it's not literal. Maybe it just means we stop hiding. Stop being silent about who we are."

"Vampire and wolf. In love."

"Yes."

She leaned into him. "That's a good song."

"I think so too."
