Chapter 23 - Pressure Builds Beneath the Trees

Eli did not rush after the first kill.

That alone separated this from instinct.

He moved forward—but not immediately into another fight. Instead, he adjusted his pace, slowing just enough to let his breathing settle fully. His grip on the sword remained steady, but he loosened his shoulders slightly, allowing tension to release instead of accumulate.

The first engagement had given him more than a core.

It had given him confirmation.

The creatures here were stronger than the outer edges—but not beyond control. Their power relied on direct force, on overwhelming momentum.

That could be managed.

But only—

If he stayed precise.

The forest deepened gradually as he advanced.

The light shifted first, thinning through the canopy in uneven patches. Shadows stretched longer across the ground, distorting shapes and movement. The air carried a heavier stillness now—not silent, but quieter in a way that suggested fewer distractions.

Less noise.

More focus.

Eli adjusted accordingly.

His steps became lighter.

Not faster.

But quieter.

Each placement deliberate, minimizing disruption to the ground beneath him.

This time—

He would not wait to be found.

He moved with intention.

Scanning.

Tracking.

It didn't take long.

A break in the pattern of the forest floor caught his attention first. The ground was disturbed—not violently, but recently. Leaves shifted in uneven directions. Small branches bent but not broken.

Movement.

Eli slowed.

Then lowered his stance slightly.

His gaze moved ahead—

And found it.

Two creatures.

Smaller than the first one he had fought—but not by much. Their bodies were leaner, built for speed instead of power. Their posture lower to the ground, movements more fluid.

Different.

That mattered.

They hadn't noticed him yet.

Eli studied them for a moment.

Their spacing.

Their movement patterns.

The way they shifted positions relative to each other.

They weren't random.

They were coordinated.

That changed everything.

Eli adjusted his grip on the sword.

Two targets.

That meant no room for hesitation.

If one gained an opening while he focused on the other—

The fight would end badly.

He stepped forward.

Not quietly this time.

Intentionally.

The creatures reacted instantly.

Their heads snapped toward him, bodies lowering further as their muscles tightened in preparation.

No testing.

No hesitation.

They moved.

Fast.

Both at once.

Eli shifted immediately.

His body angled—not retreating, but repositioning. The first creature closed the distance in a direct line, its claws striking forward with sharp precision.

Eli intercepted.

Not fully blocking.

Redirecting.

The strike glanced off his blade, sliding away just enough to avoid full contact.

But the second creature—

It was already there.

Its movement came from the side, its timing perfectly aligned with the first attack.

Eli stepped back.

Just in time.

The claws cut through the space where his torso had been a fraction of a second earlier.

Fast.

Faster than the first creature.

Eli adjusted.

He couldn't treat them individually.

They functioned as one.

The next exchange came immediately.

The first creature pressed forward again, forcing Eli's attention, while the second circled—seeking an opening.

Eli shifted his position constantly.

Never staying in one place long enough to be surrounded.

His movements tightened.

More efficient.

More controlled.

He stepped in—

Then out—

Then across—

Each motion breaking their coordination just enough to prevent a clean attack.

But it wasn't enough.

Not yet.

The second creature lunged again—

This time lower.

Aiming for his legs.

Eli reacted—

But the timing was tighter.

Too tight.

The claws connected.

Not deep—

But enough.

A sharp line of pain cut across his leg as he stepped back, his balance shifting slightly under the impact.

He adjusted immediately.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't retreat further.

Instead—

He stepped forward.

That broke the rhythm.

The creatures expected distance.

Not pressure.

Eli closed in on the first one before the second could reposition.

His strike came fast—

Aimed not at the center—

But at the shoulder joint.

The blade connected.

The creature reacted—

Its movement disrupted.

That was enough.

Eli shifted again—

Turning his body to keep both targets within his range of vision.

The second creature hesitated.

Only for a moment.

But that moment mattered.

Eli moved.

He pressed the injured one first.

Not to finish—

But to force the other to react.

It worked.

The second creature lunged to intercept.

Eli anticipated it.

His blade shifted mid-motion—

Redirecting from the first target to the second.

The strike wasn't clean—

But it landed.

Enough to disrupt.

Now—

Both were affected.

That evened the field.

Eli exhaled once.

Then moved.

No hesitation.

No pause.

He pressed both.

Alternating pressure.

Never allowing either to recover fully.

His movements sharpened.

Each step more precise.

Each strike more deliberate.

The fight compressed.

From chaos—

Into control.

Until—

The first creature faltered.

Just slightly.

Its injured side slowed its response.

Eli saw it.

And acted.

His strike came clean this time.

Direct.

The creature dropped.

The second reacted instantly—

But now—

It was alone.

Eli adjusted.

His stance stabilized.

His focus narrowed.

The final exchange came fast—

But it didn't last long.

Without coordination—

The second creature couldn't maintain pressure.

Eli read its movement.

Stepped inside its range—

And ended it.

Silence returned again.

But this time—

Eli's breathing was heavier.

Not uncontrolled—

But elevated.

His leg—

Still stung.

He looked down briefly.

The cut wasn't deep.

But it would slow him if ignored.

He adjusted his stance.

Tested the weight.

Usable.

But not ideal.

That meant—

Efficiency mattered even more now.

Eli stepped forward.

The bodies lay still.

He crouched.

The process repeated.

Careful cuts.

Controlled movements.

Search.

Find.

Two cores.

Slightly larger than the first.

Still unrefined.

But better.

He held them briefly.

Then secured them.

Three.

Still not enough.

But progress.

Eli stood again.

His body carried more strain now.

His movements slightly heavier.

But his focus—

Sharper.

Because now—

He understood something else.

This wouldn't get easier.

Not today.

Each fight would demand more.

Take more.

Test more.

And if he made a mistake—

There would be no one to correct it.

Eli looked deeper into the forest again.

The shadows had grown longer.

The air—

Heavier.

More presence.

More danger.

Good.

That's where the stronger ones would be.

That's where the better cores would come from.

He adjusted his grip on the sword again.

Then stepped forward.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

The hunt continued.
