The room felt colder than it should have been.
Maya sat in the center chair of the corporate interrogation room, her hands resting calmly on the table even though her pulse was steady but heavy. Ethan sat beside her, his jaw clenched. Claire, on the other side, couldn't stop shaking.
Across from them stood two corporate security officers—and behind them, a closed glass wall where shadows of higher executives moved.
And then the door opened.
Olivia Bennett walked in.
She looked calm. Too calm.
Behind her was Mr. Bennett, the company CEO and Olivia's father.
His expression was unreadable, but there was disappointment in his eyes—not directed yet at anyone specific, but at the situation itself.
Mr. Bennett sat down slowly.
"Explain what happened," he said firmly.
Olivia spoke first.
"These three accessed restricted executive financial files without authorization," she said smoothly. "I caught them inside the system myself."
Maya's eyes narrowed immediately.
"That's not true," Maya said.
Olivia didn't even look at her.
"It's all recorded," she added, placing a USB drive on the table. "Every action they took is documented."
Ethan leaned forward.
"That recording can be manipulated."
Olivia finally looked at him.
"Are you accusing the company system of being wrong?"
Claire quickly shook her head.
"I didn't know it was illegal—I just followed Maya's instructions!"
Maya turned sharply toward Claire.
"You're lying."
Claire avoided her eyes.
Mr. Bennett raised his hand.
"Enough."
Silence fell.
He turned toward Maya.
"Why were you inside the executive system?"
Maya hesitated.
This was the dangerous part.
If she revealed the truth too early, Olivia could destroy the evidence.
So she chose her words carefully.
"I was investigating financial inconsistencies," Maya said calmly.
Olivia smiled slightly.
"Inconsistencies," she repeated mockingly.
Mr. Bennett frowned.
"What inconsistencies?"
Maya paused.
"I can't explain everything without access to the files again."
Olivia immediately stepped in.
"She's stalling."
The security officer nodded.
"It's standard corporate procedure. All three will be suspended pending full investigation."
Claire gasped.
"Suspended?"
Ethan clenched his fists.
"This is a setup."
Olivia turned toward him.
"Careful with your words."
Mr. Bennett stood up.
"This meeting is over."
Just like that, everything collapsed.
Maya was escorted out—but as she walked past Olivia, their eyes met.
And Olivia whispered softly:
"You should have walked away when you had the chance."
Maya didn't respond.
Because Olivia didn't know one thing yet.
The truth had already left the building.
