Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 Shadows in the Past

The rain fell softly against the windows of the small apartment, tapping gently like fingers knocking on a secret door. Maya sat on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at the glowing screen of her phone.

Daniel's message was still there.

"We need to talk."

Just four simple words, yet they carried the weight of a thousand memories.

Her chest tightened.

Three years. Three long years of love, trust, and shared dreams—now reduced to a painful silence between them.

Maya closed her eyes.

She remembered the first time they met. It had been in the university library. She was searching for a book on psychology when Daniel accidentally bumped into her, causing a stack of books to tumble onto the floor.

They both laughed as they picked them up.

"Guess fate wanted us to meet," Daniel had joked.

At the time, Maya believed him.

Now she wasn't so sure fate had been kind.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another message.

"Please, Maya. Just meet me once."

Maya stared at the words.

Part of her wanted to ignore him forever.

But another part of her—the part that still remembered the warmth of his smile—wanted answers.

Why had he betrayed her?

Why had everything fallen apart so suddenly?

With a sigh, Maya grabbed her jacket and stood up.

If she was ever going to move forward, she needed to face the truth.

The café was quiet when Maya arrived.

Warm yellow lights glowed softly above wooden tables, and the smell of fresh coffee filled the air.

Daniel was already there.

He sat near the window, nervously tapping his fingers on the table.

When he saw her, he stood up quickly.

"Maya…"

His voice sounded fragile.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence between them felt heavier than the rain outside.

"You wanted to talk," Maya finally said, her voice calm but cold.

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

He gestured toward the chair across from him.

"Please sit."

Reluctantly, Maya sat down.

Daniel looked different.

His eyes were tired, and his usually confident posture seemed weighed down by guilt.

"Maya… I know I hurt you," he began quietly.

"That's an understatement," she replied.

Daniel lowered his gaze.

"I never wanted things to happen like this."

"Then why did they?" Maya asked sharply.

Daniel hesitated.

His hands trembled slightly.

"There are things you don't know," he said.

Maya frowned.

"What things?"

Daniel looked up at her,

For the first time, fear flickered in his eyes.

"The night you saw me with Olivia… it wasn't what you think."

Maya's heart pounded.

Olivia.

Just hearing her name made anger burn in Maya's chest.

"She kissed you," Maya said bitterly.

"Yes," Daniel admitted.

"But I didn't choose it."

Maya stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel leaned forward, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Olivia has been manipulating everything."

Maya blinked.

"That doesn't make sense."

"There's more," Daniel said.

His voice shook slightly.

"Something happened months before you caught us… something I never told you."

Maya's stomach twisted.

"What happened?"

Daniel hesitated again.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Olivia threatened me."

Maya froze.

"Threatened you… how?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"She said if I didn't stay close to her… she would destroy you."

The café suddenly felt colder.

Maya's mind raced.

"Destroy me?" she whispered.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"She has connections. Powerful ones."

Maya stared at him in disbelief.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I'm telling you the truth," Daniel said desperately.

"If I pushed her away completely, she promised to ruin your career before it even started."

Maya's heart pounded loudly in her chest.

Could that really be true?

Before she could respond, the café door opened.

A cold gust of wind swept inside.

And with it came a familiar voice.

"Well… this is interesting."

Maya's blood ran cold.

She slowly turned toward the door.

Olivia stood there.

Her eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Well, well," Olivia said, walking toward their table.

"Looks like secrets are finally being revealed."

Daniel's face turned pale.

"What are you doing here?"

Olivia smiled sweetly.

"Oh, Daniel… you know I always appear at the most interesting moments."

She looked at Maya.

"Tell me… do you believe his little story?"

Maya clenched her fists.

"What do you want, Olivia?"

Olivia tilted her head slightly.

"What I've always wanted."

Her smile widened.

"Control."

Maya felt a chill run down her spine.

And suddenly, she realized something terrifying.

The betrayal she thought had destroyed her life...was only the beginning.
