Chapter 84 - THIRD TRIMESTER: FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN

🌼

It came slowly.

Not all at once, not like a storm crashing through their quiet world—but like a whisper that lingered a little too long. The anxiety crept in through small moments: the silence after a doctor's visit, the way Sofia would rest her hand on her stomach a second longer than usual, the late nights when sleep wouldn't come as easily as it used to.

The questions followed soon after.

At first, they stayed unspoken, tucked between glances and half-smiles. They lived in the spaces between their conversations, in the hesitation before laughter, in the way Kenzo would sometimes stare off into nothing while holding Sofia's hand.

Until one night, he finally said it.

They were lying in bed, the room dimly lit by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. Sofia had her head resting on his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It usually calmed her—but tonight, she could feel something else beneath it.

A quiet tension.

Kenzo exhaled slowly, his fingers tracing absent patterns on her arm.

"What if I'm not enough as a father?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Sofia lifted her head, searching his face. There was something vulnerable there—something raw and unguarded that she didn't see often. It made her chest tighten.

She hesitated for a moment, then gave a small, fragile smile. "And what if I'm not enough as a mother?"

The words hung in the air between them. Silence followed.

Not the comfortable kind they were used to—but a heavier one, filled with doubt and fear neither of them knew how to fully name. The kind that made everything feel uncertain, even the things they were once sure of.

Kenzo swallowed, then shook his head slightly, as if trying to push the thoughts away. "We're not supposed to be perfect," he said, though his voice still carried a hint of uncertainty.

Sofia studied him for a moment, then slowly leaned into him again, resting her head against his chest. This time, she held him a little tighter. "We're just supposed to show up," she replied softly.

He let out a quiet breath, his arms wrapping around her instinctively, as if anchoring himself in her presence. A pause. Then, even softer— "Even scared."

The admission felt like a release. Like opening a door they had both been too afraid to touch.

Kenzo's arms tightened around her, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them.

"Then we'll show up scared together," he murmured.

And somehow, that made it feel lighter. Not gone—the fear was still there, lingering quietly in the corners of their hearts—but it didn't feel as overwhelming anymore. Because it wasn't something they had to face alone.

Sofia closed her eyes, listening once more to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. This time, it felt different. Not just steady. But certain.

And for the first time that night, she allowed herself to believe that maybe… just maybe… being enough didn't mean being perfect. Maybe it simply meant staying.

Holding on. And choosing each other—again and again—even in the moments when fear tried to take over.

Together.
