Chapter 83 - SECOND TRIMESTER: FIRST HEARTBEAT

🌤

The first ultrasound changed everything.

Not because they didn't believe it—because they did. They had already whispered dreams into the quiet, already imagined tiny fingers curling around theirs, already pictured a future that felt both distant and impossibly close. But this… this made it real in a way nothing else could.

The clinic room was softly lit, almost too calm for the storm of emotions building inside them. The faint hum of the machine filled the silence as Sofia lay back, her hand instinctively searching for Kenzo's. He took it immediately, lacing their fingers together, his grip a little tighter than usual.

Neither of them spoke. They didn't trust their voices yet. The monitor flickered to life, shadows and shapes moving in a language they didn't understand. Sofia held her breath, her eyes fixed on the screen, afraid to blink—as if she might miss something important if she did.

Kenzo stood beside her, completely still. Then— A sound. A heartbeat. Fast. Small. Alive.

Sofia gasped softly, her free hand flying to her mouth as her eyes widened. It was such a tiny sound, and yet it filled the entire room—no, it filled her whole chest, echoing in places she didn't even know could feel this full.

Kenzo froze.

For a moment, it was like time stopped just for him. The world narrowed to that rhythmic pulsing sound, steady and insistent, like a quiet declaration: I'm here.

His grip on Sofia's hand tightened without him realizing. "That's… ours?" he whispered, his voice fragile with awe, like he was afraid the moment might disappear if he spoke too loudly.

The doctor smiled gently, glancing at both of them. "Yes." That single word settled over them like something sacred.

Sofia turned to Kenzo immediately, needing to see him, needing to know he felt it too. And she did.

She saw it in the way his eyes softened—more than she had ever seen before. It wasn't just the love he had always given her. This was different. Deeper. Wider. It was love that stretched beyond the two of them, reaching toward something new, something they had created together.

Something that belonged to both of them. Kenzo looked at the screen again, then back at Sofia, as if trying to hold both realities at once—the image, and her.

Without hesitation, he reached for her hand again, this time bringing it closer to his chest. "I hear it," he said quietly.

Sofia let out a shaky breath, tears slipping down her temples into her hair. She smiled through them, her heart so full it almost hurt. "So do I."

They stayed like that for a moment—hands intertwined, eyes moving between each other and the tiny flicker on the screen, the sound of that small, steady heartbeat wrapping around them like a promise.

And in that moment— something shifted. Something inside both of them expanded in a way they hadn't expected, like their hearts were making room for a new kind of love. One that didn't replace what they had, but grew from it, stretching it into something even greater.

Beyond late-night conversations and shared dreams. Beyond marriage. Beyond just the two of them. Into something more. Into something that felt bigger than fear, bigger than doubt, bigger even than the life they had built side by side.

They didn't say it out loud. They didn't need to. Because in the quiet glow of that room, with a heartbeat echoing between them— they both understood.

They were no longer just two people in love.

They were becoming a family.
