Chapter 61 - CHAPTER 60: THE MOMENT YOU STOP PRETENDING

💔

It wasn't betrayal. It wasn't even confusion. It was clarity.

Sofia realized it first one quiet evening. She was sitting with Adrian again. Talking. Laughing softly.

And in the middle of it— something shifted inside her. Not suddenly. Not painfully. Just… clearly.

She wasn't falling in love. Not yet. Maybe not at all. But she was no longer holding onto the past. And she wasn't afraid of that anymore.

After they parted ways that night— Sofia stood alone for a moment. The air felt calm. Not heavy. Not emotional. Just honest.

And she finally admitted it to herself. Kenzo is not my present anymore.

Not with sadness. Not with regret. Just acceptance.

Across the world— Kenzo had his own moment. He and Elia were walking again. Late evening. City lights around them. And for a brief second— Kenzo noticed something.

He wasn't searching anymore. Not for Sofia. Not in conversations. Not in silence. That realization didn't hurt. But it settled deeply. Because it meant something had changed permanently.

"You're quiet again," Elia said gently.

Kenzo smiled faintly. "I think I'm just… thinking differently now."

She glanced at him. "About what?"

He paused. Then answered honestly— "About how some people are meant to stay in your past… but still matter in your present in a different way."

Elia nodded slowly. Not questioning. Just understanding in her own way. "That sounds like something you've already made peace with," she said.

Kenzo thought about it. Then nodded. "Yeah… I think I have."

Later that night— Sofia sat on her bed. Phone in hand. She opened her old chat with Kenzo. Stared at it. Not with longing. Not with pain. Just memory. Then she closed it. And didn't reopen it.

At the same time— Kenzo did the same. Not deleting. Not clinging. Just… letting it be what it was.

A chapter. Not a life sentence. And for the first time— both of them understood something deeply. Moving on wasn't about forgetting someone. It was about no longer needing to hold onto who they used to be to survive.

Sofia exhaled softly. "I'm okay," she whispered. Not because everything was perfect. But because it was over— in the way it needed to be.

Kenzo looked out his window. The city alive around him.

And for the first time in a long time— he smiled without thinking of the past.

Not because it was gone. But because it had finally taken its place.
