Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 5: THINGS UNSAID

Sofia stopped trying to pretend. That was the first change. Small. Quiet. But important. Because now… she noticed. Everything.

The way Kenzo didn't look at others the way he looked at her. The way he spoke in short sentences—but meant more than he said. The way he seemed… distant. But not cold. Never cold.

That afternoon, she found herself waiting. Not intentionally. At least… that's what she told herself.

She sat on the same bench. The same place where they first talked. Her notebook open. Pen in hand. But she wasn't writing. She was waiting.

Minutes passed. People came and went. The wind shifted. Leaves rustled softly.

Then— footsteps. Sofia didn't look up immediately. She already knew.

"You're early," Kenzo said.

She smiled to herself before looking at him. "Or maybe you're late."

He sat down beside her. Not too close. But closer than before. A comfortable silence settled between them. Not awkward. Not forced. Just… there.

Sofia finally spoke. "You always show up like that?"

Kenzo glanced at her. "Like what?"

"Quietly," she said. "Like you just… appear."

A small pause. Then— "I don't like unnecessary noise."

Sofia chuckled softly. "That explains a lot."

Kenzo looked at her. "What does it explain?"

She tilted her head slightly. "Why you're always in your own world."

Another pause. "Not always," he said.

Sofia raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

Kenzo looked ahead. Then, quietly— "Not when you're around."

The words didn't sound dramatic. They were simple. Almost… casual. But they landed heavily. Sofia's heart skipped. Just once. But enough.

She looked down at her notebook, suddenly aware of her own breathing. "Is that a compliment?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Kenzo didn't answer right away. Then— "Yes." Short. Direct.

Sofia bit her lip slightly, hiding the small smile forming. "Then I'll take it." Silence returned. But this time— it felt different. Heavier. More… aware. Sofia glanced at him again. "You never really talk about yourself," she said.

Kenzo didn't respond immediately. "I don't have anything interesting to say," he replied.

Sofia frowned slightly. "That's not true." He looked at her. Quietly. "Everyone has something," she continued. "You just… don't share it."

Kenzo's gaze lingered on her. Longer than usual. Then— "Why does it matter to you?"

Sofia hesitated. Because that was the question, wasn't it? Why did it matter? Why did she care? Why did she want to know more about someone who barely spoke? She swallowed softly. "I don't know," she admitted. A pause. Then— "I just feel like… you're not as simple as you pretend to be."

Kenzo's expression shifted. Subtle. Almost unnoticeable. But Sofia caught it. "Maybe I don't want to be known," he said quietly.

That… stung. Just a little. Sofia nodded slowly. "I get that." A pause. "But…" she added softly, "that also means you're choosing to stay alone."

Silence.

Kenzo looked away. Not because he disagreed. But because she was right. And he knew it. The wind picked up slightly.

A strand of Sofia's hair fell across her face. Before she could fix it— Kenzo reached out. He didn't hesitate. Didn't think too long. Just… acted. His fingers gently tucked the strand behind her ear.

Sofia froze. Completely still. The world didn't stop. But it felt like it did. The touch was brief. Soft. Careful. But it lingered. Too long.

Kenzo pulled his hand back quickly. Like he realized what he had done. "I—" He stopped.

Sofia looked at him. Her heart racing. But she didn't speak. Not yet. Because something had shifted again. Something small. But dangerous.

And neither of them were ready to name it.
