Chapter 15 - Changing Fate and the Whispered Secret

After the chaotic end of the class, the hallway outside Classroom 7-B was unusually quiet. Most students had hurried away, still shaken by the dark spiritual energy they had witnessed. Kai walked slowly, his mind replaying the vision the system had shown him moments earlier — Lirael sitting on a throne of bones and shadows, surrounded by legions of demons, her silver hair flowing like a crown of night, a twisted, macabre smile on her lips as she ordered the destruction of humanity. The Spiritual King stood at her right hand like a loyal guardian of death.

He couldn't let that future happen.

Lirael walked a few steps behind him, her silver hair still partially hiding her face. She hadn't said a word since the incident, but her violet eyes kept darting toward him nervously. When they reached a quieter corridor away from the main flow of students, she finally spoke, her voice soft and hesitant.

…Kai?

He stopped and turned to face her. For the first time since they met, she was looking directly at him without immediately looking away.

Thank you… again. For stopping him. And for… not being scared of me. Of what I can do.

Kai gave her a small, gentle smile, his purple eyes warm and steady.

You don't have to thank me every time. I saw what they were doing. It wasn't right.

Lirael's cheeks turned a soft pink. She clutched her books tighter to her chest, but she didn't run this time. Instead, she took a small step closer, her voice barely above a whisper.

I… I don't have many people who talk to me. Most are afraid of what I can summon. Or they hate me because I'm not pure. But you… you didn't look scared. You just… helped.

Kai nodded, his expression calm and sincere.

I've been the one everyone hated before. I know how it feels. You don't have to face it alone anymore.

For a moment, Lirael's violet eyes softened. A tiny, genuine smile touched her lips — shy, fragile, but real. It was the first time she had smiled at someone without fear in a very long time.

They continued walking together in comfortable silence. Lirael stayed close, as if afraid that if she walked too far, the moment would disappear.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed behind them.

The golden-haired elf from the class appeared again, his face still red from humiliation and his robes slightly torn. Spiritual energy crackled around his hands as he raised them, clearly intending to attack Lirael from behind.

You half-breed whore! You think you can humiliate me and get away with it?!

Lirael froze in fear.

Kai reacted instantly. He spun around and delivered a sharp, controlled strike with his fist wrapped in fate threads, hitting the elf squarely in the chest. The elf flew backward, crashing into the wall with a loud thud, gasping for air.

Lirael's eyes widened in surprise, but she said nothing. She simply stared at Kai, her heart beating fast, a mix of shock and gratitude shining in her violet eyes.

Kai turned back to her, his voice calm and reassuring.

Are you okay?

She nodded slowly, still shocked. Then, in a soft, trembling voice, she whispered:

…Thank you. Again.

Kai gently took her hand — carefully, so she wouldn't feel trapped — and started walking again.

Come on. Let's get you somewhere safe. Your room, right?

Lirael didn't pull her hand away. She let him lead her, her cheeks turning a deeper shade of red. For the first time in years, someone was walking with her, protecting her, treating her like she mattered. The warmth of his hand made her heart flutter in a way she had never felt before.

When they reached the small, modest dormitory room assigned to scholarship students, Lirael opened the door with shaky fingers. The room was simple — a single bed, a small desk, a few books on elven history, and a window overlooking the academy gardens.

As soon as they stepped inside and the door closed, Lirael's face turned bright red. She stood there awkwardly, still holding Kai's hand, her heart racing wildly.

This… this is my room. No one has ever been inside before.

Kai smiled softly and released her hand, giving her space.

Then I'm honored to be the first.

Lirael's cheeks burned even hotter. She looked down, fidgeting with the hem of her uniform. Something inside her was shifting. For the first time, someone had protected her without expecting anything. Someone had seen her — the real her — and hadn't run away. That feeling was new. Addictive. Dangerous.

She took a deep breath and whispered, her voice soft but filled with quiet determination:

Kai… you are the first person who has ever defended me like that. I… I think I want you to be my friend. If… if that is okay.

Kai nodded, his voice warm and sincere.

It's more than okay, Lirael.

Lirael's eyes sparkled with a mix of shyness and growing obsession. She turned away for a moment, her hands trembling as she summoned the dark portal once more.

The Spiritual King emerged again, but this time he didn't look threatening. He looked almost amused as he hovered behind her.

The king's deep voice rumbled.

You called again, little one. What troubles you?

Lirael's voice was soft but determined.

He… Kai… he protected me today. He changed my fate. The system… it showed me what would happen if he hadn't. I would have become something terrible. A queen of darkness. But he chose to change it. For me.

The Spiritual King let out a low, rumbling laugh.

Interesting. The boy with the Fateweaver System. He prefers to protect you and keep your secret rather than let you walk the path of the Demon Queen. A rare choice.

Lirael's cheeks turned bright red. She looked at the floor, but a small, soft smile appeared on her lips.

He is… special.

A sudden flashback hit her.

She was nine years old, standing in a hidden forest clearing with her mother. The woman looked worried, kneeling in front of her daughter, her hands gently holding Lirael's small face.

Lirael, my sweet girl… you must never summon him in front of the elves. They will see you as the representation of death. The prophecy says that the elf who summons the Dark Spiritual King will bring ruin to their kind. They will hunt you. They will hurt you. I don't want my daughter to suffer because of that curse.

Young Lirael had nodded, tears in her eyes.

I promise, Mama… I will keep him secret.

Back in the present, Lirael looked at Kai with a mixture of gratitude and growing obsession.

He chose to change my destiny… to protect me and my secret. He is the first person who has ever done that.

The Spiritual King chuckled again.

Then perhaps he is worth keeping around, little one.

Lirael's face turned even redder, but she didn't deny it. For the first time, the shy semi-elf felt something warm and possessive bloom in her chest.

Kai… she whispered, almost to herself.

Outside the room, the academy continued its normal rhythm, unaware that a new thread of fate had just been woven — one that could change everything.

The lioness was not the only one beginning to burn for the Fatebreaker.

And the silver-haired girl was slowly, quietly, becoming obsessed with the one person who had chosen to save her from her own dark future.
