Chapter 20 - The Shadow That Fights First

The forest outside Dhuraiya felt different from the one Riven had survived before. This one was calmer. Controlled. But not harmless. The air carried a quiet tension—like something was always watching. Riven walked behind the group, not at the front, not fully at the back. Just… placed. Observing. Listening. Learning. Kael led from the front, his steps steady, confident. Lira stayed slightly to his right, eyes scanning constantly. Dren carried the rear with a bored expression, while Sova moved quietly between them all—almost invisible. "…Stay sharp." Kael's voice was low. "…We're entering mid-zone territory." Riven didn't respond. He already knew. The shift in the air. The faint distortion in sound. The pressure. It wasn't obvious—but it was there. His fingers twitched slightly. "…Three." He counted silently. Left side. Bush movement. Heavy. Slow. Not small creatures. Lira's voice cut in. "…Movement." Kael nodded. "…I see it." Of course they did. They were B-rank. But they were reacting. Riven had already processed it. The bushes exploded outward. Three beasts lunged forward—large, horned creatures with thick hides and heavy limbs. Their eyes glowed faintly red. "…Contact!" Kael moved instantly, drawing his sword and stepping forward. Lira shifted to the side, preparing her stance. Dren cracked his neck lazily. "…Finally…" Sova disappeared into motion. Riven didn't move. Not yet. He watched. Calculated. The first clash happened fast. Kael blocked the initial charge, his sword meeting the beast's horn with a heavy impact. Lira struck from the side—but the creature twisted slightly, reducing the damage. Dren stepped in, swinging wide—strong, but not precise. Sova aimed for the weak points—but the angle wasn't clean. Riven's eyes sharpened. "…Too slow." Not them. The outcome. He moved. Silent. One step. Then another. No sound. No presence. He slipped behind the second beast—just outside its awareness. His hand moved. A precise strike. Not flashy. Not loud. Just enough. The creature's leg shifted slightly—its balance broken. Kael's blade followed instantly—cutting deeper than it should have. "…Got it!" Kael shouted. But he didn't know why that opening existed. Riven was already gone. Back to his position. Invisible again. The second beast roared, turning toward Lira. Its movement was faster than expected. Lira's eyes widened slightly—just a fraction too late. Riven stepped in again. A small movement. A shift. He struck the ground—not the beast. The dirt rose slightly, altering the creature's step just enough. It slipped. Just slightly. But enough. Lira's blade landed clean. "…Nice!" She exhaled. But she didn't see it. None of them did. The third beast charged toward Dren. Heavy. Direct. Dren raised his weapon—but his stance was off. Too open. Too slow. Riven moved again. Faster this time. He appeared behind the beast for a split second. A single strike—right at the joint. Precise. Controlled. The beast staggered mid-charge. Dren's attack landed perfectly. "…Hah! Easy!" He grinned. Riven was already back. Standing still. Breathing normal. Watching. The fight ended within moments. Three beasts. Down. Silence returned. Heavy breaths filled the space. Kael rested his sword on his shoulder. "…Good work." Lira nodded slightly. "…Clean finish." Dren smirked. "…Told you it'd be easy." Sova didn't speak. But her eyes moved. Slightly. Briefly. Toward Riven. Just for a second. Then away. Riven said nothing. His expression unchanged. Just another E-rank standing quietly behind them. "…Collect materials." Kael ordered. They moved to the bodies, inspecting the kills. Horns intact. Clean cuts. Efficient damage. "…You've gotten sharper." Lira said, looking at Kael. Kael frowned slightly. "…Yeah…" His eyes moved over the wounds. Something didn't add up. But the result was clean. Too clean. Dren shrugged. "…We're just that good." Sova crouched near one of the beasts, her fingers tracing a wound. Small. Precise. Not from a heavy weapon. Not from their usual attacks. Her eyes flickered slightly. Then she stood up. Said nothing. Riven turned away slightly, scanning the surroundings again. "…More coming." He sensed it before they did. But this time—he stayed still. Let them react first. Let the story stay the same. Because right now— He wasn't the hero of this party. Kael was. And everyone believed it. "…Movement again!" Lira called out. Kael stepped forward, ready. Riven stood behind them. Silent. Invisible. Necessary. The second wave came harder. Faster. More aggressive. But the result didn't change. Because every mistake— Was corrected before it happened. Every opening— Was created before it was needed. Every danger— Was reduced before it reached them. And no one saw it. No one understood it. No one questioned it. Because from the outside— It looked perfect. It looked like a strong B-rank party dominating their hunt. It looked like Kael was leading flawlessly. It looked like teamwork. Precision. Experience. But the truth— Was quieter. Hidden between movements. Buried in moments too small to notice. A step. A shift. A touch. A strike no one saw. Riven stood at the back as the final beast fell. His eyes calm. His breathing steady. No pride. No reaction. Just observation. Kael exhaled deeply. "…That's enough for today." Dren stretched. "…Finally." Lira wiped her blade. "…Clean run." Sova looked at Riven again. This time—longer. Not suspicion. Not yet. But awareness. Growing. Riven met her gaze for a second. Then looked away. Because this couldn't last forever. Someone would notice. Someone always did. But until then— He would stay here. In the background. In the shadow. Fighting first. Winning silently. And letting someone else take the name. Because for now— That was the safest way to survive this world. And maybe— To understand it. 🔥
