Chapter 2 - [Fragments] Before The Sigil

Recovered from partial memory traces.

Source unstable. Sequence non-linear.

[Fragment I — The First Feeling]

It started small.

Not something you could point to. Not something anyone else would notice.

Just… a feeling.

Like standing still for too long and realizing your body is slightly off balance. Not enough to fall, just enough that you notice it if you pay attention.

At first, I thought I was just tired.

Everyone was.

The Lower Ash does that to you. It slows things down. Makes everything feel heavier than it should.

But this wasn't that.

This was inside.

There were moments where everything around me felt… delayed.

Like the world moved, and I followed a second later.

I tried to ignore it.

Everyone ignores things like that here.

[Fragment II — The Pause]

It happened while I was walking.

Just a normal path. One I had taken dozens of times before.

Then, without warning—

everything stopped.

Not the world.

Me.

My body kept moving, but my thoughts didn't.

For a single moment, it felt like something had caught me. Not physically. Not even mentally.

Just… held.

Like I wasn't allowed to continue.

And then it let go.

I stumbled forward like nothing had happened.

No one around me reacted.

I didn't tell anyone.

There isn't a word for that kind of thing, so what would be the point?

[Fragment III — The Lapse]

There are thoughts you can follow.

And then there are thoughts that stop.

I started noticing it more after the first time.

I would think about something simple, something normal—

Why does the ash—

And then nothing.

Not distraction.

Not forgetting.

It just… ended.

Like the thought wasn't allowed to exist past a certain point.

If I tried to force it, I would feel that same pressure again.

That pause.

That resistance.

So I stopped trying.

You learn quickly not to push things here.

[Fragment IV — The Dream That Wasn't]

I had a dream.

At least, I think it was a dream.

There was no ash.

No weight.

No pressure.

Just space.

I remember standing somewhere open, looking up at something I couldn't fully see.

It felt… familiar.

Not in a way I could explain. More like recognizing something you forgot you knew.

There was movement above me.

Not clouds.

Something else.

I tried to focus on it.

The moment I did, everything started to break.

Not the place.

Me.

Like I wasn't supposed to see it.

I woke up immediately after.

Except I wasn't really asleep.

I was still standing in the same place.

[Fragment V — The First Break]

It didn't happen all at once.

It built up.

Every pause. Every stopped thought. Every moment of resistance.

Until something pushed back.

I remember thinking—

No.

Not loud. Not spoken.

Just… clear.

And for the first time, the pressure didn't hold.

It cracked.

I felt it.

Not physically, but something shifted.

Like a barrier that had always been there finally gave way, even if just a little.

Everything became sharper for a second.

Clearer.

Too clear.

I could feel something underneath everything else.

Not the ash.

Not the ground.

Something deeper.

Then it stopped.

Everything went back to normal.

But it didn't feel the same anymore.

[Fragment VI — The Voice That Wasn't There]

I started hearing things.

Not voices.

Not exactly.

More like impressions.

Half-formed thoughts that weren't mine.

They didn't speak in words.

They didn't need to.

They felt… old.

Not in time.

In weight.

Like something that had been there long before I was.

I tried to ignore it.

I told myself it was just the ash.

Everyone says the ash does things to your head.

But this felt different.

This felt like something was trying to reach through.

[Fragment VII — The Moment Before]

I knew something was coming.

Not because I was told.

Because everything felt like it was leading somewhere.

The pauses got stronger.

The resistance got heavier.

And then weaker.

Like whatever was holding everything in place was starting to fail.

I remember standing still, just waiting.

Not for anything specific.

Just… waiting.

My chest felt tight.

Not from fear.

From pressure.

Like something inside me was pushing outward, and something else was trying to keep it contained.

I didn't understand it.

I still don't.

[Fragment VIII — The Moment Before]

There was a point where everything went quiet.

Not silent.

Just… still.

No resistance.

No pressure.

No interference.

For the first time, my thoughts didn't stop.

They kept going.

Further than they ever had before.

I don't remember what I was thinking.

Only that I reached something.

Something I wasn't supposed to reach.

And right before it—

right before everything changed—

I realized something.

This wasn't starting.

It had already begun.
